China - a fun place to visit

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

I had the privilege of visiting China on three different occasions, and really fell in love with this great country, its people, the landscapes and their food. Every city had its own treasures, just waiting to be discovered; truly a new world to the western mindset.

Many books have been written about this enchanting country, and I can never do justice to its story in a single article. I was fortunate to travel with a Chinese friend which made it possible to experience what most tourists in organized groups never get to see. The architecture, as it differs from city to city and rural area to rural area, takes you from ancient times to the extreme modern within hours. Exquisite malls dot the bigger cities such as Shanghai and Beijing, with five star restaurants everywhere.

Spending time with locals in a restaurant is a wonderful cultural experience. The menu is a small card with all the different dishes available. You tick the blocks next to the items that you want, but before it is served a pot of hot tea is brought to the table. This first pot is not for drinking, but to rinse your chop sticks and bowls in which your food will be served. Once this is done, the pot is replaced with a fresh one. Those around the table usually serve one another.

The different dishes that were ordered don't arrive at the same time as we are used to in the west, but instead served one after the other.

A big bowl with food is placed in the middle of the table, but one must be careful not to eat too much of the first food as many more rounds of different items will be served, one after the other. When your bowl is empty, someone will get up from his chair and help you with another serving from the dish in the middle of the table. The Chinese are very courteous, and great hosts! Most Chinese don't drink coffee, so don't expect to see it on a menu.

Cultural and folklore events are a great way to learn about their history and way of life. Some dances and plays depict events in their history, all executed in beautiful style and perfection.

Life in China is more affordable than in the west, and visiting there is certainly something that should be on everybody's bucket list. Travel within the country, whether by air, bus or train is very easy, but make sure you have a Chinese friend with you to read the directions, or can ask for some when you need, it as most local don't speak English. Also be prepared to be photographed when you travel by bus or board a plane. Security is tight there; they always know where you are and where you stay, but if you're not into mischief, you have nothing to fear.
