7 Day Adventure Through Tasmania, Day 1

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Welcome back to another series of my travel blogs. I’ve spent some time working, repaying debts and trying to save for the next trip meaning my writing has gone under the radar the last few months.

Recently I just returned from an epic 7 day trip with my girlfriend Gabby to the beautiful untouched wilderness of Tasmania. World renowned for stunning rocky mountains, crystal clear water beaches, abundant wildlife (no bears, score!) and great food and wine. Lucky for us Tasmania (or Tassie as us aussies call it) is just an hour flight from Melbourne. Hobart the capital city of Tassie has become the trendy new location for travellers as it is within a few hours of all the great outdoor bucket list locations, ocean side town with plenty of fantastic seafood and produce and the famous MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) draws in a new wave of interest in the island.

Gabby and I had planned a 6 day campervan road trip (1 day Hobart) ticking off bucket list spots and trying to cram as much in while still having time to unwind and chill in some great locations. As the content of our holiday is so rich in detail it will take me some time to write about so I hope you’ll enjoy my day by day break down of the these great locations.

Our flight arrived at 8am on our first day giving us a full day to enjoy. Straight off the plane we headed directly to the Wicked Camper depot a 5 minute Uber away. These are a really affordable way to see the country if you are on a tight budget, however be prepared to put up with the faults these cars can have (most of them are ancient) and always get their premium insurance liability (I will explain in a later blog).

As explained in one of my earlier blogs check out the app Maps.me, as it will be very handy in Tassie given there is limited phone internet reception. Our first campsite for the night was Fortesque Bay about 1.5 hours from Hobart. Seeing as we had ample time to explore we checked out a cave listed on maps.me as Remarkable Cave just 10 minutes out from the historic Port Arthur convict town.

En route we some an epic swimming spot in Pirate Bay with literally no one around it was a refreshing dip to start the day.

Once we arrived Gabby and I were taken back by how clear the water was along these beaches and sheer beauty of the coastline. Down some stairs we went and found the awesome cave which had to entrances to it. With the low tide, we were lucky enough to walk through the cave to have a better look. Take a look!

Onwards and upwards we continued to Fortseque Bay for about 45 minutes down the road. There is an epic campsite along the water and for only $11 it is well worth your money. With our campervan set up we headed on our first hike to Cape Hauy (about 4 hours return walk so pack some good walking shoes). This walk is the start of the great Three Capes Walk that takes around 3 days and tours you around the dizzying high dolomite cliffs that will leave you breathless. Cape Hauy is a little taste of that hike that still provides the goods of those magnificent cliffs.

As you approach the cape you are greeted with the refreshing smell of ocean and eucalypts and cliffs that seemed to look like they have been stacked on vertical columns (few places in the world have similar looking structures than these cliffs).

Once you approach the trail up the cliffs there are tiny trails that led to the cliffs edge that give you sobering perspective of how far you have to fall below if you happen to slip, but the rewards are too great to have fear. Below you are small caves that when waves smash against the cliffs the echoing sound inside the cave gives a deep thunderous boom, probably nothing you’ve ever heard before!

Keep some oxygen tanks handy because the last part of the walk will leave you breathless. Further up the cliff toward the other side you will leave anyone with a sense of vertigo. As if giants had been playing with Lego blocks its truly amazing to see in person how these dolomite columns have been formed by wind erosion. This is an absolute must see location if you visit Tassie!

After the long hike you may want a refreshing dip in the nippy ocean (which is close to the Southern Ocean…. brrrrrrrrr) to help reset your nervous system. The beach at Fortseque Bay is a great place to swim, here are some great shots of Gabby enjoying the swim!
