Tasmania Adventures Day 3 Freycinet National Park

in #travel6 years ago

Welcome to another edition of travel blogs from the beautiful Tasmania. Today I will be sharing with you the world renowned Wineglass Bay. A place you may have seen somewhere from a picturesque postcard (note it doesn’t really look like a wineglass, false advertisement?)

Nestled in Freycinet National Park which offers traveller’s spectacular walks, boulder scrambling, squeaky white sand beaches and fragrant eucalyptus forests

A couple quick tips before I get into the blog. All national parks in Tasmania require a parks pass. If you are intending to visit at least 3 it will be much more worthwhile and save money by ordering an 8 day holiday pass for $60 (rather than the one off day payment of $24). You can find the information here.

Wineglass bay is one the most popular tourist destinations in Tasmania and accommodation is expensive af and during the peak season airbnb’s start at around $220 per night. If you are after some affordable accommodation that won’t break the bank there is a great option of camping along Richardson’s Beach for $13 a night and includes toilets, showers and drinking water. Powered sites are also available. Not only will you have a fantastic view of Coles bay and the surrounding granite mountains, the beach is virtually deserted making it feel very private. Due to its popularity, there is a ballot between November and February so get in before the crowds .

Alternatively there is free camping 15 minutes’ drive from Coles Bay and this beach is stunning, the sand is even whiter… and squeakier and its called Friendly Beach!

The best part is it has a fantastic landscape that looks behind Wineglass Bay giving you an entirely new perspective (who doesn’t enjoy seeing things differently?!)

Take a look at these epic shots!

So… enough pre hype Jules just get to the blog!

Rising from a rainy night in our rooftop tent, Gabby and I awoke to a sun trying to push its way through the clouds with beams of dawn kissing the mountains surrounding us.

Just a 5 minute drive from the campsite the start of the Wineglass Bay carpark. The walk is broken up into a few different categories depending how eager you are.

Option 1 Mt. Amos: 3-5 hour hike with at least one hour of scrambling. Difficulty, hard.

While Gabby and I didn’t climb this, it’s pretty doable to anyone who is reasonably fit

Option 2 Wineglass Bay Lookout: 40 minute walk uphill. Difficulty, moderate.

Don’t like hills? You’re going to have to bite the bullet here, the scenery around the entire time makes up for it if you’re having trouble. Ok so it looks like a wineglass if you imagine the curve along the beach as the glass.

Option 3 Wineglass Bay Beach: 1.5 hour return walk from the lookout. Difficulty, moderate.

Driving/travelling all that way just to get to the lookout and take a photo, just to leave a moment later is something I see way too often now (smartphone instant gratification reward system hacking? That’s for another blog). Spend some extra time to enjoy your journey, take your shoes off to connect with the earth and watch the turquoise colour waves crashing.

After a day of enjoying the beautiful scenery it was time to crack open a wine and enjoy the sunset together on our ‘private’ little beach just outside our campsite. It’s the little things in life we often overlook and that day reminded us how privileged we are to be able to go on such nice little wilderness getaway just a few hours away from the busy streets of Melbourne.

I’ve also just started using Dtube (they updated it so people like me with basic internet in Australia can actually use it!). My next video will have some great shots from Wineglass bay and hiking around Cradle Mountain (World Heritage Site + next blog)

Given the recent price crash in STEEM at ~$2 I invested some money to buy more Steem Power. I'm doing this so I can help support my followers by rewarding them for their contribution to my posts. So please comment, upvote, resteem and I will be sure to reward your efforts too by giving back!

I will close with some words of wisdom: Life is like a sleepingbag bag, you just can't fit it all in
