BoldspiritTravels on a budget: My Cartagena, Colombia #1 [Solo backpacking on a budget in Latin America]

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Hey Guys!
How was your weekend? Did you manage to take a well-deserved rest? :)
I didn't because I have some minor personal issues to resolve, but I know all will be good soon. :) the most important to me is to stay calm, haha and as positive as possible.:)
But let's come back to my travel journey. :)

I spent my last day in Cali in Colombia driving around the city on a motorbike with Julian, my Couchsurfing host who quickly became my friend. In the evening we drove to the airport on the same moto, with my 18 kilograms backpack on my back (he rode with my smaller backpack on his chest). Luckily I had enough time so we could make a small souvenir of that crazy ride. :)

I didn't wait for long to get to the plain and in one hour thirty minutes, I landed in Cartagena. It was already very late. I rented a bed in a dorm in a random hostel. Its reviews were okay, but far from what I normally would accept. ;) But as I mentioned in my previous post - my arrival to Cartagena was a spontaneous decision, and I didn't find anything better for that particular night.

The eight-bed dorm was packed, with both boys and girls. No air conditioning not a fan on the ceiling. And believe me, Cartagena is a city where the temperature stays high even at nights. Luckily I already had a different hostel booked for the following two nights.

I also wouldn't recommend the area where my hostel was located. It was just outside the historic part of the city, therefore, it was a bit cheaper. But... it is a zone with constant parties. People outside the clubs, drinking heavily, some pin drugs which are still too easy to get throughout Colombia. And making so much noise, screaming both with joy and/ or anger. Or maybe it was me? Was I "too old"? 😅 I was never a big fan of binge drinking, even during my university and Erasmus times. I like to get tipsy from time to time with my friends. But I know my boundaries. And yes, maybe I'm a bit too traditional in that regard - I don't think a lady should get wasted. 🤣

I couldn't get a proper sleep with the warm air and people coming and leave three room during the whole night. So I got up early in the morning and went to the kitchen to make myself a breakfast and drink a coffee that I so desperately needed. ;) fully equipped I went to take a sit on a small balcony. There was already one woman enjoying her cup. The streets were finally quiet, we could admire how charming this place could actually be. The lady, around 40 years old, was traveling with her partner. It was her last day in Cartagena. She suggested that I should try to see some movies in the open air cinemas as the film festival had just started!! Such a great coincident, I thought, as I'm a huge movie enthusiast!:)

These are stunning pictures. Whenever I think of Cartagena, I am reminded of the movie Romancing the Stone. It is one of few movies that I have watched more than once.

so nice to hear from you:) It's been a while :) You must visit Cartagena yourself! you will love it, i'm sure! :)

Amazing city

Beautiful photos, Cartagena is pure color and flavor. I remember walking through its streets, a contrast of tourists with locals. Also casinos and lots of fried food but great flavor. I hope to continue your trips from now on. Greetings from Venezuela. I recommend you visit Margarita, the pearl of the Caribbean.

The next time i'm in the region i will definitely visit it, thank you so much for a recommendation! :)

Waw !

I also don't like binge drinking and consider getting wasted as tacky. I've been called archaic before, it's nice to know someone obviously as intelligent as you shares a similar view

haha, that's a kind comment and remark ;) btw. even if we are the last woman who have this "archaic" mindset it doesn't really upset me :)

Resteemed, this was a great article! Beautiful photography also! Thank you for sharing :)
