Mexican Hostel Review: Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico, Cielo Rojo and Maria Sabina, the Defender of the Psychedelic Mushroom

in #travel7 years ago

After her first mushroom trip at the age of 8,
Maria Sabina has long been an icon of
psychedelic travel and healing.

In 1955, after an article in
Life magazine

was published about Maria Sabina,

the mushroom healer,

the world began a trip that would change consciousness forever.

She taught the world that if you want to heal

it is possible to eat the mushrooms and their spirit will guide you.

The following muriel is a common image of the devout catholic

and shamanic healer of southern Mexico.

Here, it is a striking image located at the turn of the staircase of the hostel, Cielo Rojo .

Type her name into Search to learn more about her uncommon life.

My last three nights in the beautiful and magical
Zocalo of Oaxaca, Mexico I spent at
the hostel Cielo Rojo.

As I find is somewhat common with Latin homes and businesses

the door looks like crap but when you go inside

it's a whole other vortex.

Cielo Rojo complied with that particular thought.

The entrance to the hostel is in the center of the photo above.

You can easily see the common black, iron gates.

The doors pictured above lead to a pool table,

a lounge area for powering computers and the stairs to the second floor

where all the beds are located.

A full length view of the hostel interior.

The two above photos were taken from the roof.

Below, the artistic , clean and spacious dining room.

Above is the community kitchen.

Below is the upstairs community bathroom.

The upstairs area is framed by a wrought iron lined walkway.

The dorm room appears ethereal when the

sun penetrates through the double door windows.

The beds are a bit small.

I would have liked more head space in my bottom bunk but the mattresses are decent.

Open the doors, step out onto the balcony and have a look around.

Look to the left.

Look to the right.

The dorm bathroom.

After all the strange places I have traveled lately this bathroom was a relief.

Upstairs, on the roof, you can hang your laundry to be dried in the fresh air.

...and enjoy the beautiful view.
