Have you ever experience a long… too long flight ? The people next to you are too loud, you are tall and have to bend over for hours, your neighbour falls asleep on your shoulder…

If you want to know how to find the best seat according to who you are, what you expect and where you are going to, you clicked on the right link !

When you travel a long distance by plane there are many ways to be bothered.
Let me give you some advises to choose wisely your seat and optimise your future travels !
In bonus I’ll tell you on which side of an airplane you should seat according to your destination to get the best view before landing ! Wouldn’t it be the best reward after a long flight ?

3 tips to be sure to get what you want :

  • Check in ASAP ! Nowadays most companies allow you to check-in 24h hours to few days before your flight. By doing so you can choose your seat. It’s true that it will probably cost you a few bucks but it could also save you some troubles during the flight.

  • The website https://www.seatguru.com gives you valuable tips about the plane you are going to take such as best / worst seats and why. It also gives you, user’s reviews and pictures. Let me show you what you can find about an Air Canada Airbus A330-300 :

  • If you don’t want to pay an extra to choose your seat, here is another tip you can apply : Be the last one to board in ! In fact, it happens often that an aircraft isn’t totally filled with passengers and in this case, you could pick up a much better seat than the one you got.
This tip is especially true if you are travelling during low peak period. Doing so, you’ll be able to spot if some seats remain empty and seat in.
It happened to me when I travelled from Australia (Sydney) to New Caledonia (Noumea). Imagine I had been placed in the middle row in the middle seat, probably one of the worst seat (for me), but when I boarded in last I could see few seats left free and changed for a much better one ;)

And you, who are you ?

  • The tall ones :

For us, long distance travel can be really painful. So if you don’t want to hit the front seat with your knees every second, you have two options :
-> First you can choose an aisle seat. You’ll probably have to move sometime to let your neighbours go to the bathroom but that’s still a good option.
-> Second, and better one, choose a seat next to an exit. You’ll have all the space you need without having to stand.

  • Families :

You want some space for you and your kids ? Go for the first row of each section of the plane as you will have extra legroom and it’s a bassinet location so passenger traveling with infants are often seated in this row.

  • The anxious ones :

Some people don’t feel comfortable in an aircraft, so here are some tips. Prefer seats on the back of the aircraft, indeed some studies show that you are 40% more likely to survive to a crash there. Secondly take aisle seats as you will be first to evacuate in case of any problem.

  • The Dreamers :

If like me you like to fall asleep with your head in the clouds ? Go for a window seat ! That’s definitely my favourite, you have a great view and you can isolate yourself again the wall and fall asleep without fearing to wake up on your neighbour’s shoulder.

Bonus :

I just told you that window seats are my favourites, but they aren’t all equals !

A window seat, Yes ! But on which side ?

So here we are, last but not least let me tell you which side will offer you the best view on landing for 18 worldwide destinations such as New York, Dubai, Paris, London or Berlin…

Many people like to seat next to the window for the view, but at least do you know which side will give you the best scenery matching to your destination ?

A French website used the comments of a blog community « AVGeeks » to determine which side of an airplane offers the best view on landing for 18 cities in the world.

So, if you don’t want to miss a spectacular view over Los Angeles and the famous «Hollywood» sign you’ll have to choose the right side of the aircraft.
Inversely if you are going to Montreal, prefer the left side as it will offer you a nice view over the river, the Olympic stadium and the Mont-Royal.

Note : This isn’t of course an exact science cause due to weather conditions the landing ways could change, but at least with this guide you will maximise your chances and it will give you the upper hand !
