ONCE AT IMMIGRATION in MEXICO-
Produce your Mexican Visa in your passport (in lieu of what many get as a Tourist Card), she will stamp and enter the details of entry on your FMM. No Fee.
NOW!!!! YOU HAVE 30-DAYS TO GET TO AN “INM” Office to get a RESIDENTE TEMPORAL CARD! (Instituto National de Migracion)
NOTE: YOU CANNOT LEAVE WITHIN THESE 30-DAYS unless…
NEED TO LEAVE WITHIN THE 30-DAYS you need to apply for PERMISO DE SALIDA y REGRESO FORM-Permission to Leave and Return Form (You will need to fill out, prepare with another SMALL picture and the INM will Stamp & Sign)

FORMS NEEDED FOR TEMPORAL RESIDENTE CARD-
-Fill out the Online form- https://www.inm.gob.mx/tramites/publico/estancia.html
-Letter of Canje (Exchane) written in Spanish (Some INM offices require, some don’t)
-Original and copy of passport
-FMM form from border crossing at immigration
-Formato Basico- http://www.inm.gob.mx/complementos/FORMATO/Formato_Basico.pdf
-Fees $3,961 Pesos
This process will allow you ONE year to be in Mexico. The following year, you can apply for a 1,2 or 3 year process. One you get to 4-years, you have the option to become PERMANENT vs. temporary.
-PHOTOS-You will need to submit 3-photos either with the paperwork or they may want them when you do your fingerprints near the end…
-Three color photos with white background, infant size (2.5 x 3 cm):
(Two photos taken from the front and photo taken of the right profile. Applicant must not be wearing glasses/earrings in the photo and hair must be behind the ears, no smile. Pictures should be taken in same format like passport photos. No Polaroid or cellular phone pictures.)
NEXT STEP, THE PASSWORD EMAIL & NUT FOR APPOINTMENT DATE-
Once you submit your docs to the INM office, they will give you a document that has a NUT number on it (Process Number) email you a password. Once you receive the e-mail, you can add your NUT and password to this link to check the status until appointment date. NOTE: Our password didn’t work, so we just kept stopping by and asking them about the status and how much longer until our appointment.
NEXT STEP PAYMENT AT BANK & FINGERPRINTS-
So, you have your appointment date! You must now…
-Get to the office early to obtain the INM bank details and total to be paid.
-Go to a bank they request and make payment to their account and obtain the receipt!
-Bring the receipt back, give fingerprints and if you haven’t provided photos you give now!
-You will also sign some documents
FINAL STEP-PICKING UP THE CARD!
The INM office will then give you a date to return to pick up your card! It takes about a week.
----------------EXTENSION OF YOUR VEHICLE STAY-------------------
Once at the border and your FMM has been stamped, your vehicle is only allowed to stay for 6-months. But, you are trying to stay longer! Applying for a Permisio de Importacion Temporal del Vehiculos-Temporary Importing Vehicle Permission Form

Free. Have to visit another INM office who handles this. They simply apply your VIN # to your Temporary Resident Card details on file into their system. Keep a copy of the Permission Slip with you!
