Travel Diary - Hawa Mahal (A Palace of Winds in Jaipur, India)

This famous palace is located in Jaipur a city in India near to its capital New Delhi. It was built in the year 1799 AD by the Rajputana king of Jaipur Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. The purpose of its construction was to enable women of Royal families to have a view of the city and everyday life from this palace windows. They are not supposed to go in open so they watch outside using these windows.

Hawa Mahal is also known as a palace of the winds. It is located in the Jaipur City which is the capital of Indian state Rajasthan.

Jaipur is a very popular tourist destination in India. Every year thousands of tourist visit this ancient city to have a glimpses of beautiful palaces and forts in Jaipur.

About Hawa Mahal
This is a five storey palace and is situated in the heart of Jaipur city. This city is also called pink city as most of the ancient buildings are made up of red and pink sandstones.

Its shape is similar to pyramid and there are total 953 windows in this palace walls. Windows are also called ‘Jharokhas’.

Architecture
It is designed as a beehive castle with small windows. It has a height of 50 feet from its foundation. Its wall has a thickness of less than 1 feet. Large number of windows enables the circulation of fresh and free air inside structure. Palace has a total of 5 floors. There is a courtyard outside 2 floors. Its interior is stark and plain with passages and pillars reaching to top floor.
From this palace one can have a very nice view of Jaipur city.

There are large number of tourist attraction around hawa mahal like famous Jantar Mantar, Amer Fort, Nahargarh fort, Ram bagh palace, Jal Mahal (Water palace) and others.

How to visit Jaipur
Jaipur is well connected with India’s capital Delhi via road, rail and air transport. Regular vehicles are available from Delhi to Jaipur. The distance between Delhi to Jaipur is around 270 kilometer which takes around 5 hours by car. One can visit Agra city from Jaipur also to view Tajmahal which Is 240 km from here.
