WanderLust #6 Thailand: Bangkok

in #travel8 years ago

Hello Steemit!

WanderLust is a blog run by two German sisters Erika and Johanna! We both travel around the world for work and play and hope to be able to take the Steemit community on some of our journeys with us. Today’s posting is the first of a series on our recent trip to Asia. Today will be focused on the start of our trip in Bangkok, Thailand.

Let's get started!

Wat Pho

Wat Pho is a Buddist temple in Bangkok. Wat Pho is known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, and is commonly viewed as the most visit-worthy temple in all of Thailand. Thailand itself lists Wat Pho as the first of the 1st-class royal temples and is home to some of the ashes of King Rama I. Our guide had also informed us that Wat Pho was home to the largest collection of Buddha in all of Thailand, including the famous reclining Buddha, so we knew that we had to visit!

You can see how massive the reclining Buddha statue is in these photos. It is 46 meters long!

After spending 5 hours exploring the entirety of the temple complex, we can safely say that it was time well spent. Every surface of the temple was covered in extremely ornate mosaics and friezes. We especially enjoyed this floral pattern that was covering one of the spires.

Not all of the temple was so brightly colored, but every square of it was beautifully ornate and felt like stepping into a fairytale. This arch made us feel like we were going to step into another universe just by walking through it!

Bangkok Markets

One of our favorite parts of traveling is visiting the local markets and trying to get a less "touristy" idea of what a city was like. Because of this, our first stop after visiting Wat Pho was to head to the markets of Bangkok!

Yaowarat Road in Bangkok's Chinatown was one of the busiest market streets that we have ever experienced. The smells of spices and cooking was so delicious that we could have spent our entire travel budget just tasting all of the food that we were walking past!

We hope that you are enjoying your journeys with us, and we hope to hear from you and will incorporate your suggestions into our future posts.
