The probably most beautiful road in Australia is 243 km long and lead along the southaustralian coast. So we stored our camping stuff in the car that we rented for about 70 Dollar and then the adventure started...
Werribee Open Range Zoo
Als erstes ging es in den Werribee Open Range Zoo, dort fährt man mit dem Auto durch den Zoo und kann die Tiere wie bei einer Safari in Afrika ganz nah bestaunen. Nach ca. 40 min. Fahrt von Melbourne waren wir etwas geschockt über den Eintrittspreis von 36 AUD (als Student 27,50 AUD) aber wir beschlossen trotzdem rein zu gehen. Schliesslich hatten wir schon vor Augen wie die Löwen über unser Auto springen und die Giraffen an unseren wehenden Haaren knabbern. Am Ende war es wie in fast jedem anderen Zoo auch: die meisten Tiere waren eingesperrt und man konnte nur in einem Bus mit vielen anderen ein paar Giraffen und Antilopen näher betrachten. Tja, hätten wir uns mal früher informiert...
Is it worth it?
First we went in the Werribee Open Range Zoo, there you can drive with a car trough the zoo and see the animals really close like at a safari in Africa. After 40 minutes of driving from Melbourne we were really shocked about the entry fee of 36 AUD (27,50 AUD for students) but nevertheless we decided to go in. After all we had the picture in our head that the lions are jumping over the car and the giraffes nibbling in our waving hairs.
At the end it was like in every other Zoo: most of the animals were in cages and you could only sit in a bus with many other people and watch a few giraffes and antelope. Our fault...
Der Weg ist das Ziel
Und das trifft hier absolut zu. Schon auf dem Weg zu den ganzen Sehenswürdigkeiten ist man geplättet von dem azurblauen Wasser und die rauen Felsen die daraus hervorragen. Alles ist grün und in den Bäumen sitzen Schwärme von weißen Papageien, die auf einmal mit einem Schrei in alle Richtungen davon flattern. Besonders muss man auch die Augen auf den Straßenrand richten, ob dort nicht gerade ein Kängaruh zum Sprung ansetzen will. Uns haben besonders gut der Leuchtturm am Cape Otway, London Arch und die Twelve Apostles gefallen.
The route is the goal
Already on the way to all the attractions you are overwhelmed by the azureblue water and the rough rocks that rise up. Everything is green and in the trees are sitting swarms of white parrots which suddenly all fly away with a loud screaming. Also you have to watch the street that there is no kangaroo who wants to jump into. Our favourite spots were the lighthouse on Cape Otway, London Arch and the Twelve Apostles.
Campen mit Überraschung
Gegen Abend gab es dann ein leckeren Apfelcider am Strand und ein paar gegrillte Würstchen mit Ciabatta. In ganz Australien gibt es öffentliche Grillstationen, die immer gepflegt und sauber sind, was wir echt top fanden. Dann hieß es Zelt aufbauen auf dem Princetown Recreation Campingplatz, was zum Glück recht schnell klappte. Ich hatte davor nämlich noch nie im Leben gezeltet. Die Überraschung: auf dem Platz leben freie Kängaruhs, die man sogar nachts neben dem Zelt grasen und hoppeln hören konnte. Für mich der absolute Wahnsinn.
Und dieses Glücksgefühl, wenn man ganz früh morgens aufwacht, die Sonne langsam aufgeht und im Gebüsch beobachtet dich ein riesen Kängaruh.
Camping with a surprise
In the evening we were drinking a nice applecider on the beach and eating some sausages with ciabatta. In whole Australia are so many public grillstations, they are always nice and clean, which we often used. Then we had to build our tent on the Princetwon Recreation Campground and fortunately it worked well. This was my first time to sleep in a tent.
And the surprise: on the campground are living wild kangaroo which you can hear in the nighttime beside you tent eating and running. For me the best thing!
And this good feeling if you wake up early and you can watch the sunset and the kangaroo watches you.
