Traveler's tips: how to maintain a healthy relationship while on the road

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

So I have been traveling with my girlfriend for over 10 months now. Believe me - I never thought that traveling could be such a challenge to relationships. It is sometimes freaking hard to keep in touch, even though, spending like 24/7 together. That is why they say that if a couple could go through traveling together; they are meant for each other. So, how to maintain healthy relationship even on the hardest circumstances?

Adore each other

You wouldn’t imagine how hard it is to adore someone when you want the world to explode, because of spending 40 hours in airport without much sleep. It does not matter to relationships, though. You still have to adore your beloved one, even when you cannot do anything else. It is important to remember.

Understand each other

So, that adoring thing won’t work out all the time… obviously. What’s when? Just try to understand that your love might have a bad mood, be exhausted, and pissed about hard life… while shouting at each other. Just kidding. Try to understand the situation before the fight picks up. That will be better for everyone.

If someone is pissed about you, it does not mean that you are not loved. It just means that someone is having a bad day, and that happens to 100 percent of us.

Apologize

Let’s not be sexists and agree that all of us have to do it. Whoever picked the fight, it still remains everyone’s fault, so don’t worry – you won’t have to apologize for nothing. So never be an asshole, who just keeps fighting for the sake of fighting. It is not worth it.

Know the differences

While traveling I like to go to a place without a correct address and just ask the people around for directions. My girlfriend hates that, and she prefers to check everything up before leaving the house. It looks so innocent, this difference, but believe me – over the time it can grow to a freaking, relationship destroying, good mood crashing, smiles demolishing, machine of hate.

So be sure to know that everyone in this strange world is different and those differences will forever exists. Get over with it, and start appreciating your love’s choices… even if you disagree.

Treat each other nicely

When traveling you don’t get to see a lot of comfortable life… Constant moving, strange neighborhoods, overnight buses, zero routine, and anything that might kill your senses is waiting for travelers. And oh boy, how easy it is to forget that we all have those needs for warm hug or good movie with a cup of hot chocolate in the hands. Or whatever else that makes us happy and relaxed.

While traveling you might forget that you have to treat your love with a lot of love, and become a little pragmatic and straightforward. Nothing wrong with that, because it helps while moving a lot, but love cannot be forgotten. Everyone’s guilty pleasure is something romantic. Some admit it, some don’t, but it is a must to maintain healthy relationships.

Don’t spend all your time together

I could say this and that about this matter, but I will say – JUST DON’T. We all need some alone time and others have to respect it.

In my eyes, spending too much time together might be one of the main reasons of any relationships falling apart.

No one is perfect. You suck as well

Yup, if you are looking for perfect, you are in the wrong planet, buddy. Traveling exploits one’s weaknesses and that might scare away the other half. Even worse – that can easily create a mutual disrespect and partners can easily start mocking each other. That is the human nature and we have to fight it. So remember that you can be some pain in the ass as well, so be calm and accept someone else’s flaws. For example, I am slow and suck at understanding directions... It even pisses me off, so how could someone else be happy about it?

Of course, those flaws have to have some lines and person should rather be good with some flaws, but not flawed with few good characteristics.

Be empathic

I always think that it is hard for me to sit out in a bus for 30 hours, but when I remember my girlfriend. Not only she has to do all the same, but on top of that, there is me, who can never shut up and talks about all sort of shit without much of a reason. That thought helps me to appreciate what my girlfriend goes through for our relationships, and also it kind of makes me want to try to be a little better. It is important to be empathic on so many levels, that next time when you are in a difficult situation with anyone, just think what that anyone thinks and how he feels. Might help.

Conclusion

Traveling is that one hard thing to do for a couple. Sometimes you would want to get away, but there is nowhere to go. Sometimes you would want to quit it all, but you just cannot for so many reasons. Most of the time you are tired from this world, but you have to keep the good emotions lowing. And so often when you are mad on everything, you just let it all out on the most important person in your world… Just because that person is always the closest one.

I totally encourage everyone to go on a trip with your beloved one, just to find out if you should really love that one. A simple and perfect test.

P.S. One last adivce - just be a good person which you would want to marry yourself. That might help.
