The Chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona, Arizona.

in #travelfeed5 years ago

The Chapel of the Holy Cross is a unique chapel which has been built into the steep, red rock hills (buttes) in Sedona in Arizona, and is run by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix. The landscape is particularly vivid and striking with the bright red earth contrasting with the equally vibrant endless blue skies. Any place of worship here, would need to be something out of the ordinary.

The chapel is 250 feet high and located at the top of a one thousand foot rock wall. It sits majestically and proud between two pinnacle spurs.

The interesting design was built during the 1950's and was inspired by the Empire State Building. The church was constructed in 18 months for the relatively modest cost of $300,000. It has been built on national forest land thanks to the issuance of a special permit.

In the sculptor's words, "Though Catholic in faith, as a work of art the Chapel has a universal appeal. Its doors will ever be open to one and all, regardless of creed, that God may come to life in the souls of all men and be a living reality."

It was completed in 1956 and commissioned by a local rancher.

Regardless of your faith, I think you will agree that its a striking building and it commands a wonderful view over the valley below. The sharp concrete lines and extensive use of glass look wonderful in the architecture of the building.

Several million tourists and pilgrims visit this chapel every year. If you wish to visit, it is open from 9am to 5pm, 7 days a week.

Thanks to Mrs. Bkkshadow for the wonderful pictures.
