It has been a while ...
... since I last participated in #treetuesday.
We don't have that many trees here at the coast.
So I decided to give you an update on our little sumac.
About one year ago this still very little tree came into our garden.
I wrote about it in this post on the 7th of May 2019: Treeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetuuuuuueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessday again :)
Here a picture from that post:

On the 11th of June 2019, I gave an update already because I was astonished how quick it grew: #treetuesday by @old-guy-photos - update on our little sumac
Here a picture from that post:

We brought it from @psionic-tremors' parents in Germany to The Netherlands. They have a lot of these trees in their garden because it is a very invasive sort of tree.
Exactly this behavior - being invasive - gave us a bit of a headache.
We want to keep this tree - also because it has lovely leaves, especially during autumn. The change in color is awesome.
But how could we keep this little tree from growing everywhere?
It was time for a new "accommodation"
We needed a solution because the little tree was growing like crazy and needed a new place.

Just digging a hole and planting it into the garden was no option.
So our wine barrel in which we collected rainwater was the solution.
A prison for the roots
We sawed the upper part of the barrel and put a tarpaulin inside to keep the roots from growing through little holes outside the barrel.
You might think: "Hey, it did not let out any water. How should the roots escape from the barrel?"
Well, the water itself closed all holes and cracks because the wet wood expands. This effect will be much less now. Also, the roots will "work" on the wood. Did you ever see a plant growing through asphalt? Then you know how powerful plants are when they want to grow.

The result
After filling the barrel with some clay fragments and about 90 liters soil the tree's new "accommodation" was ready.

But it will not be the final result
This bought us some time to think about something else before the tree will be so big that the barrel will not be able to keep the tree from falling - especially during heavy autumn storms.
I'm curious how long it will take until it's too dangerous to have it in this barrel.
Two years? Or only one? Well, we will see.
P.S.: the German name of the tree is "Essigbaum" = "Vinegar tree"
Perhaps we can tap our own vinegar in the future where we earlier tapped our rainwater?

I love sumac. Especially in the fall when the leaves have turned red!
Yes, I totally agree!
Good looking tree!!
Thank you @rynow! :)
We just planted raspberries. We are watering on a strict schedule. We hope they survive.
Oh, raspberries :)
I hope too they'll survive. But I'm sure you'll manage it ;)
I don’t have much of a green thumb. Ha ha.
You and they will make it ;)
