Britain’s “Affluenza” Problem

in #uk12 hours ago

Is Britain nursing a kind of national illusion about how rich it really is...?

This came into stark daylight recently when we basically didn't have any war ready naval vessels because they were all being serviced, and yet we are a nation which prides ourselves on our navy....

This is a tough to swallow because it goes against a story most of us have grown up with: Britain, world power, wealthy, just occasionally tripped up by bad leadership or the odd wrong turn.

But maybe it’s not just about bad management. Maybe the truth is that the country just isn’t as wealthy as it likes to believe.

The “Sixth Largest Economy” Story

Technically Britain has the 6th largest GDP in the world, but total GDP doesn’t tell the whole story.

Factor in GDP per capita, and we drop down several places, behind many Northern European countries....

That gap matters because so many British expectations are still shaped by the idea of a richer country.

People want Scandinavian-style public services, American-level military strength, generous pensions — and they want all this without paying especially high taxes.

Sure, there’s always some government waste — there’s no denying that — but sometimes the harder truth is that there’s simply not enough money in the pot to fund everything people expect.

You see this disconnect everywhere..... councils can’t keep up with basic repairs. Potholes stay put. Libraries vanish. Social care chews up more and more of local budgets.

And in this case the data probably doesn't lie...

The Office for National Statistics keeps pointing out that UK productivity has barely budged since the financial crash. When productivity stalls, so does long-term growth.

Still, the idea of Britain as some unstoppable global force hangs on.

But the gap between this idea and the financial reality is enormous!

Final thoughts...

Maybe it's time we all took a new reality check and started accepting the time is long overdue to expect less...?

Yes, the UK's GDP per capita has dropped out of the top 20 and has fallen below Israel's, despite Israel having been at war for the 2.5 years in which it overtook the UK.

We've lost a lot of our industry in my lifetime and it seems what wealth we have is being concentrated in a few people. I'm doing okay, but I think a lot of people struggle. I try to avoid getting much on credit. Despite what they may see I doubt any politicians have easy answers.

Between Brexit and Labour government, we are going from one strenght to another. The only missing miracle is for Reform to win, and then we will live in 7th Heaven. With national funeral and all.
