Ulog # 2 | A Simple Life

With the temperature ranging from 81°F to 90°F, today wasn't the typical summer day and the perfect time to work in our vegetable garden. When we got home from our 3-week vacation in Davao, all our tomato plants were dead as expected. However, the eggplants and chilies thrived, much to our delight. They did look like they were about to die but since our arrival, Red had been tending to them in the mornings and the afternoons. He worked his magic on those tender roots until new leaves sprung, giving us hope for an abundant harvest soon.

I only got to check the crops today as I have been busy preparing for yet another trip. I am done packing for our next adventure and thought of taking advantage of the gloomy weather to actually spend some time outdoors.

Capsicum annuum

As you can see, our chilies are looking quite well with all those healthy new leaves. I was so happy to see new flowers are starting to bloom. We use chilies everyday and growing them meant we didn't have to buy from the market anymore. When in season, they come cheap but here are times (especially around Christmas season) when they are sold at around ₱1.50 EACH!

Solanum melongena L.

As for the eggplants, Red was able to harvest some yesterday and from the looks of it, there are more to come. We should be able to harvest these babies in a couple of days and I plan to enjoy them torta style. I also found a recipe to make a delicious ensaladang talong that I'm itching to try.

Carica Papaya

Out of all the wonderful sight in our garden today, the Papaya takes the cake. We ended up harvesting the giant fruits after waiting for months. It seemed like all they wanted to do was grow and didn't show any sign of getting ripe until this week. We harvested all the fruits that were showing some yellow lines and gave some to our neighbors. In return, we received a handful of green mangoes that they also harvested from their mango tree.

This is pretty much how our life is. I think we found a nice spot for ourselves in this neighborhood and I wouldn't trade it for the big city life that Red and I had to put up with for almost a decade. Thanks to Red, I was able to "retire" from being a corporate slave and I can only be happy that he is now enjoying a brief break too. I live for days like these. How about you?

Do A Ulog Today

In the words of @surpassinggoogle, "There is nothing as fresh (in terms of content) as "pieces of us". It is dynamic, fresh, unique, rare. And no "two days" are exactly the same, especially with "You" in it, for we accrue experiences, new moments, new adventures etc. We aspire new resolutions and fail and succeed and "succeed overall", by virtue of "the gift of life" and this we will document celebratorily on the steem blockchain here on @ulogs. You can be Ulogger and "all that's needed is "YOU" and each day and this we will celebrate"."

Follow @ulogs to read more about this initiative. This is another awesome production of @surpassinggoogle and a subsidiary of @steemgigs. I support Terry and have voted for @steemgigs along with @cloh76.witness, @ausbitbank and @precise as witnesses who have been adding invaluable contribution to the community. You too can cast your vote, just go to https://steemit.com/~witnesses

You have very nice garden with many fruits and vegetables. It’s good that you didn’t have to buy them from the market.

It’s a pretty way of life that we can see only in the countryside, I absolutely agree. You were so lucky living for days like these. ;)

Yes maam. Sigurado ka sa kakainin mo. 😊

It is nice to have homegrown produce. And to find the plants that can take care of themselves, especially when you travel. Great idea, too, to trade with your neighbors. Enjoy all that tropical fruit -- I can only imagine papayas and mangoes! Happy gardening.

Thank you @haphazard-stead! I am very much interested in finding wild greens in our area, so I can start trying them too. =)

Mainam talaga kapag may ganyang garden kasi bukod sa nageenjoy kana.. nakakatikim ka pa ng fresh and healthy crops..

Korek sir. Stress buster din po ang pag gagardening. 😊
