Unschooling is legal, just like raining is legal

As Unschoolers we often times are confronted with the perspective, that avoiding institutional child care is somehow illegal. Well, it is not. Arbitrariness in polity is! It is called bureaucratic despotism, too. We then often find ourselves preserve against despotism. One way of doing this is arbitrariness again. We do what we do because we can. We are free to do so. Bureaucracy is not.

And I hope that more people will succeed in this. But doing it for others takes from our substance. That's why support is often only possible in close friendship.

Even at the risk of irritating you: It may be logical to want to change a painful system. And from this the question arises, HOW this can succeed. But in our opinion this is not (anymore) logical. Nothing is logical in this matter!

The question of how does not arise, if it is not about changing a system. Our success, and that of countless other families, lies in moving away from the system. Slowly but surely. And: to not blame oneself or anyone else if this does not succeed in every attempt.

More important than success is to limit the damage that occurs naturally through the system during the journey. You can study 300 years of cultural history, but in the end you will make your own experiences again. See Irrational Consistencies, 1971 by Ivan Illich, see Ideen zu einem Versuch, die Grenzen der Wirksamkeit des Staates zu bestimmen, 1841 Wilhelm von Humboldt (published postmortem, written 1792), see Prelude of the lecture Was heißt [..] Universalgeschichte?, 1789 Friedrich Schiller, ...

We are not shy. We are reluctant. We are so for good reasons. Understandably, it is not easy to understand those immediately.

Our perhaps most important tip at this point is: Don't worry about the system. Take care of yourself and your family and friends. Be cautious to avoid the effects of a system, just as you would avoid a rain shower, which you do not want to change either. Rain, as we all know, has its advantages. Seek them to make your life easier. What it takes is what we have been training away from ourselves all these years: creativity. This is what determines the beginning and end of systems. And certainly it also needs humor. Not to be confused with cynicism.

Just saying. We wish you a wonderful day!
