Steemit DMCA Analysis

in #utopian-io6 years ago

The list of posts on the Steemit DMCA blacklist is public. It can be found in the steemit/condenser repo. Note that this data is not on the blockchain, and is not related to the steemit/steem repo. This list is embedded directly into Condenser, and it not part of the blockchain. (Although, in the future, this list might be put on the chain.)

If a post is on this list, then the content of the post will not be shown on Steemit.com. It will still be shown on other dApps, and will still be on the blockchain. Copyright holders can email [email protected] to add a post to this list. Note that in this post, I'll be talking about the list of posts. There's also some entire user accounts that get the DMCA treatment, but I won't cover them here. I analysed this list to get more insight into blocked posts on Steemit, one of the only true forms of censorship on Steem.

In total, 209 posts are blacklisted. @doujinblog has the most posts on the list, at 32. Looking at the data, it seems like there are a few user with a lot of posts. Out of 72 posts on the list, unique users who have a post on the list, just 6 make up more than 50% of posts on the list. Here's a few graphs on the distribution of users:

There are 73 unique categories that have some blacklisted posts. Note that category refers to the first used tag, in this case. The most blacklisted tag is #hentai, with 32 posts. This is because @doujinblog, the most blacklisted user, uses this tag on all of their posts. Next up is #gaming, with 26 posts. Blacklisted posts with this tag are exclusively made by @braini, who appears to repost copyrighted game reviews. Next is #photography, which has blacklisted posts by 4 users. This makes #photography the most popular tag to have blacklisted posts from multiple users. After #life, #anime, #dbooks, and #travel, the categories are all over the place.

Here's a graph of the distribution of categories:

You can download the spreadsheet I used to make the graphs.

This is very informative. I had posted about DMCA and the blockchain in the past here. Didn't knew that steemit.com is blocking the access content subject to DMCA.
