Misrepresentations of Dr. Wakefield's Bowel Disease-Autism Paper
Here's the TRUTH:
The paper that the Lancet retracted, was NOT A STUDY OF VACCINES AND AUTISM. That is the beginning of the hoax surrounding Dr. Wakefield's paper.
The paper was a study of a NOVEL BOWEL DISEASE and AUTISM.
After Dr. Wakefield, a Gastroenterologist, published a paper about Chrohn's disease, a mother called him and said that her son had the same gut disease, which started after her son developed autism. Her child was in writhing pain.
What the paper DID prove was that there was a distinct intestinal disease going along with autism. They found that when they would clear the gut out to do a colonoscopy the day before to look at the intestinal tracts of these children, that many of the mannerisms would disappear, like the head banging and the rocking.
What the paper pointed out is that autism is not just a neurological disease, but that there is a connection to the intestinal tract.
The connection to the vaccine, was ONLY A SIDE NOTE in the paper.
8 out of 12 of the parents said that the autism developed right after the MMR Vaccine.
It was a CASE STUDY. Case studies are small! This was only the beginning, first look at an issue.
In doing a Case Study, you MUST document everything that everyone says, including all of the doctors that saw the child, all of the background, and when 8 out of 12 parents said that the MMR caused the Autism, you must document it! The other 12 scientists that were working with Andy did have a problem with publishing it because their funding came from Pharmaceutial companies. Andy asked them a question -- he asked, "If the parents had said that 8 out of 12 children developed autism after coming down with the ACTUAL measles, would you have published it?" They said "Yes." So Andy convinced them to include the parents' comments. These other reputable 12 scientists had to put their signatures on the study beside Dr. Andrew Wakefield's.
The results of the study were submitted to The Lancet, a British medical journal, for publication in February 1998. The paper stated:
“We did not prove an association between measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine and the syndrome described. Virological studies are underway that may help to resolve the issues. If there is a causal link between measles, mumps and rubella vaccine and this syndrome, a rising incidence might be anticipated after the introduction of this vaccine in the UK in 1988. Published evidence is inadequate to show whether there is a change…”
The paper wasn't retracted by the Lancet until years later. The Pharmaceutical company didn't want this information out there. Andy's medical license was also revoked.
The horrific claim that Andy abused handicapped children, was by a journalist and was supposed to be because he did colonoscopies on the children. Well how are you supposed to discover gut disease without a colonoscopy? How is that child abuse?

Personally, I would like to thank Dr. Andrew Wakefield for continuing on, despite the persecution, to stand up for ill and ignored children. If only the world had recognized earlier how to help these autistic people heal from their pain by healing their intestinal disorders. Dr. Wakefield did not have the means to pursue such a court case, but if he had he would have been found innocent along with Dr. John Walker-Smith since the origin of the charges was the same.

Interesting. I've never heard Wakefield speak. Even if the media image painted of him were true, there would still be enough information out there to make any true skeptic have concerns about conflict of interest and fraud in the CDC. It gets really scary when these concerns are met with hatred and ridicule. The issue is forbidden to talk about, which only makes it more of a concern that something is very wrong.
I know that I did not hear about Dr. Wakefield until several years after I learned about vaccinations. My oldest unvaccinated child must have been about 4 years old (he's now 12) when I realized who Dr. Wakefield was. And I had LOADS & LOADS of information against vaccinating my child without his research. Actually, autism itself wasn't a big part of my decision. Plus I had never heard of Jenny McCartney either.
Finally, after I kept reading in news articles that Dr. Andrew Wakefield and actress Jenny McCartney were THE reason that I had chosen not to vaccinate, I decided that I had better look up who they were and listen to a bit of what they had to say.
So, yes you are right that there is PLENTY of information out there to make one very, very skeptical about vaccinations.
Yes, I had the exact same experience researching vaccines, minus the children. That strategy to discredit a movement of new information I think is called the straw man fallacy. What about the trials not including the entire vaccine schedule, or the ridiculous vaccine schedule, or the history of fraud within pharmaceutical companies and the CDC, or conflict of interest, how washington, the CDC, FDA, and pharma is all one big revolving door? But most importantly, what about all the children who have unquestionably had serious adverse reactions, sometimes fatal? Even if we just look at the cases settled in court, isn't that enough to at least deserve a mature conversation about the whole thing? Instead I'll be labelled an "anti-vaxxer" even though I'm not against the science. I'm anti-exploitation, anti-manipulation, and anti-greed. You'd think there was some kind of conspiracy to manipulate public opinion.

Yes. Dr. Wakefield has a lot of integrity to keep trying to help children and get truth out, even though they destroyed his career and reputation. They win when good people do nothing.
It's not so easy for all to be right and survive with kids to consider sometimes. I admire him for everything he's doing. Educating people for the harm it can cause is hard enough without being discredited.
Thank you for a very well written post, It is because of people like you who research for truth, that the truth regarding vaccines will eventually surface to the top. And, it will be known to all how the Pharmaceutical industry deliberately poisoned everyone that received their vaccines. The tobacco industry thought they could get away with their lies but as everyone knows the truth came to light there. I believe that will happen with the Pharmaceutical companies too.

It is OBVIOUS that you never even read my well-researched article, as I happened to have highlighted above that it was only a Case Study of 12 people, and that Case Studies are always small, and that he never claimed that the MMR caused Autism in that Case Study.
Go ahead and read that part of the study for yourself before FLAGGING THIS POST and writing such an ignorant and rude response.

Here is the issue cryptogee.. Everyone needs to do their own research and make up their own mind. Ask yourself why you think you need to tell someone not to do something. Can you see if your being rational or is this fear; fear from getting people injured?
When I do my research I become aware of my own fear and how it may affect my views. So I go along carefully taking small steps and I work though it. With a little practice and time things become clear and at the very least they simply do not upset me anymore.
We have a real problem with large monopoly corporations and fake science so your on to something here I'll hand it to you. Seems like mostly everyone is aware of this. There is confusion about what is actually happening though. It is when we get tangled up in fear that we get cloudy vision (beer goggles if you will). If you really want to keep people safe let's practice so we can be professional and respect other peoples findings, views, and even opinions.
Very possibly so James; it's just when I read things about how a blatant fraudster, and somebody who triggered the biggest hoax in medical history, may be being misrepresented. When in fact the exact opposite happened it makes me mad.
You do realise that during this hoax, you couldn't find an article by one science correspondent in the popular media, not one. You had scientific giants like Nigella fucking Lawson, talking about MMR, autism and vaccines. Somebody who had at best, last done an experiment in school. The worst part is, people listened to her, and it all started because of Wakefield.

I understand your frustration. Remember this is a billion dollar industry though. I'm sure you have heard how corporations manipulate politicians with campaign donations right? I don't want to over-simplify it but you have a government passing laws that protect corporations from damages. And corporations that are basically so corrupt they collectively make bad decisions based on profit and ignore human health. They only want to stay under the radar but they act in ways that are clearly psychopathic. And yea, they resort to fear and even teasing and name calling as part of their damage control marketing.
The media is owned and manipulated too. If a doctor stands out the pharmaceutical industry can throw their millions of dollars around to try and discredit them. If the media gets out of line it is called carrier suicide. They do the same trick to fake science reports by bribing scientist. It is a lot of bribes and mafia like tactics.
It is really easy to find all the evidence and I'm sure you'll be convinced, however, I don't know when you'll be ready. It can be a tough pill to swallow but it is really good medicine (unlike the crap we get from the pharmaceutical industry - lol).

Maybe if you were capable of doing some real research and looked at the thousands of studies proving the dangers of vaccines you may just learn something other than the filthy language you seem so proficient at. Dr Wakefield is a man of the highest integrity and thousands, if not millions of children world wide who will never know what life is all about, they will never know what it is like to fall in love, get married and have children of their own having had that right taken from them by being damaged by vaccines which could have all been prevented but for the British journalist Brian Deer who assassinated Dr Wakefield's character with his deliberate lies and false allegations on behalf of Big Pharma.
