Just reinstalled Netrunner 17 (It broke due me me being a noob). Been running linux for everything exept gaming for most of this year. It really is easy to use and all that.

Ransom is only one possibility. This is only going to keep getting worse until they patch up the security vulnerabilities. For most people such as yourself you might want to use a hardware wallet and do not trust your computer too much. If you're someone in a position of power, then it's even worse because then you could be targeted individually by hackers.
In a way Steemit does have too much transparency in the fact that people can just look at everyone's wallet and know exactly who to target. Fortunately IP addresses are not easy to find but when a person clicks a link which takes them out of Steemit there should be a warning.
already use hardware wallet. yeah, i agree that too much transparency in here isn't a good thing.

This is just the beginning. It's going to get much much worse. Fix the exploits which make these viruses possible and next time a government agency asks for a back door cite this outcome as a reason to say hell no.
