Have you come across the incredible Whisper Gallery series that @mrblinddraw has been running for the past month? I highly recommend at least scanning the collaborative thread of impressive and highly creative images that are coming to life!
If you’ve ever played the game “Telephone” as a kid, then this concept will immediately make sense. You have a circle of people and you start with one word or phrase and whisper it to the next person who whispers it to the next and so on. By the time it reaches the other end of the group, it’s gone through many evolutions and is completely different. As a kid I always found the changes hilarious and would often be giggling excitedly when the words reached me.
The Whisper Gallery Initiative is based on this game but with art making. @mrblinddraw came up with this pretty ingenious idea of having a group of artists play off each other's work in collaboration. Each has a week to make a work of art that responds the the previous evolution.
The first week @upheaver kicked off week one with making the “seed” art piece from a poem.
Dreams of Titan, 2018 by @upheaver
Week 2 @paolobeneforti responded to @upheaver ’s work of art with his own painting:
My Untitled Artwork, 2018 by @paolobeneforti
Week 2 @aksinya made a piece in response to @paolobeneforti’s painting:
Nothing Else Matters, 2018 by @aksinya
Next for week 3 @voronenka responded to @aksinya’s art:
Flickering Light, 2018 by @voronenka
Week 4 is ME!! I'm right in the thick of making my piece and thought I'd give you a peak into what I'm making.
I began by letting @voroneka’s painting marinate in my mind for a day or so and an idea came together. Looking at @voroneka's figure, I see her dozing back in forth in that thick dreamy feeling between sleep and awake. In this space, our psyche plays with reality using dream logic to match images from both our conscious and unconscious.
My piece will use @voroneka's imagery loosely as the composition of the consciousness. The woman with her of dream logic combines this framework with a vision, a feeling of who she sometimes feels herself to be- a powerful, energy filled, unapologetic animal in the forest.
As you may know I work in clay and have a history of showing my process. I plan to use a combination of glaze painting and 3-dimensional elements to make a sort of collage-like piece. First I made a slab of clay using a white earthenware and added little frame like edges. Here I'm smoothing it:
Then I made the shelves with the bottles except they have become sort of plant-like:
Then I made some plants and leaves and will make many more when I am at the glazing stage. I also sketched a line form of the jungle cat . Even though it's very loose, and I may diverge from it, this drawing will help me feel free when glazing.
Last night I fired put it through a slow firing and unfortunately it cracked in many areas and frankly in very strange ways. I can't remember the last time I saw this kind of cracking with a piece before! I was disappointed but also this puts a bit of tension on the timing since I need to have a finished piece by Sunday to meet the timing of the Whisper Gallery so it could be very tight.

I jumped right into making another one, slightly smaller.
On the left is the cracked one and right is the new slab with mini edges:
Fortunately I could use the elements from the cracked piece and made a few changes:
I put it right away in the kiln which is a little scary. Ideally it would dry for a day or 2 first. Keep your fingers croseed that it comes out perfectly tomorrow night and I can glaze it. Stay tuned for more process and completion for this piece!

Thank you for supporting my blog and artwork!
What a cool idea!! I wonder how long the telephone will keep ringing 😜Crossing my fingers and look forward to seeing the finished product.
(if you're looking for someone to nominate next, I'm sure @artzanolino would enjoy the idea)
I think it goes 6 or 8 weeks, can't remember but I agree, it's a great idea!! And thanks for the nominee...I'll pass along the name to @mrblinddraw who btw is in @sndbox with you too.
one of the tests of true art, in my opinion, is how long the person that bought the piece - can live with it without getting bored.
hmmm....very very true!!! I'd say this about anything from a couch to a fork - anything well-designed and well-conceived will have an appeal that grows with time.
yea... how can i miss the :p
This is a hard job, using a pencil we can erase, using paints we can over paint but when it is like yourself using clay and you have such cracks then you have to start from beginning. great art, I am very excited about the result :)
ahh you are so right!! I'm really hoping this makes it through the firing...I'll know tonight :-)
thanks for your support and comment!
I have a friend who does ceramics and she has these unexplainable accidents too from time to time! It makes working with a deadline just that bit more stressful.
Super curious to see the end result!
You are SO right :-))
And by the way, do you know the Dutch ceramic artist Wil Van Blockland? She and I went to school together 30 years ago and she helped me get the opportunity to learn in The Netherlands.
I'm on the edge of my seat.
Don't crack Don't crack Don't crack
Lol, you are so sweet :-)))
Can't wait to see how it turns out!
Talent, talent and more talent.
I can't get tired of your posts.
Plus, I'll try this whisper thing, but mine would be a story or a song or something.
Stay tuned
I almost just blushed, thank you for the extremely kind words!!
Isn't the whisper thing a great idea? it would be great with a story or song too!!!
What a great idea! :) I will definitely start to follow this collaboration! And I am very excited to see your finished piece @natureofbeing! 🌸
thanks, it's so fun!! if you're interested let him know...your work is fab!!
Wow!! What an amazing project! I love the collaboration and evolution of the work! Y'all should make a final collection! :)
That's a really great idea @nickh725, I"m going to share it with all involved, thanks :-))!
WOW. great idea. :)
I was really happy when I read this share. I was interested. my mother had some work with clay in the past ... It was very tense: D is a really difficult art. But it looks great. I'm curious. I will wait for it. you are wonderful.
It's a pretty fun collaboration isn't it!! I know you like collaborative art making also so you may be a good candidate for future whisper galleries. Post on @mrblinddraw's post about this project if so and let him know. Thanks for your support!
I have seen hell lot of art here, now this is something out of my mind absolutely vivacious and so wanting...It's just mind blowing, Running out of words and you are using nature's best gift that is Soil , it's seriously so amazing :)
dirt IS a pretty awesome gift isn't it :-), thanks for your kind support!
Yea the best we can cherish from nature...Human in the end find himself in it only :)
A really nice piece, and such a bummer when it doesn't fire to plan. Must be more than a bit stressful. Especially the waiting. Probably doesn't help at all to sit in a chair and watch the kiln.
I really like your little add-on pieces. The idea of them being more of a free-form, organic look, like flowers, is a nifty contrast to the straight, box-like form of the piece/shelves.
I've got my fingers crossed it all came out of the heat as-should. If it doesn't , you can add the cracks to the intent of the art.. "Shattered Dreams" or something to that tune. OK, not the greatest idea I've ever had ( :
Lol, shattered dreams is brilliant, love it!! If I don't have to use it this time, I will next time this kind of thing happens. I only wish I had time to sit by the kiln as I did in college......we used to sit and bbq, eat, drink, hang out most of the night making adjustments to the kiln and enjoying the primal experience of the flames (gas kiln). That's the way to enjoy life and I'd really like to find a piece of that these days. Thanks for giving me a chance to reminisce a bit!!
We're hoping for the non-use of that name. There IS nothing quite like remembering back to fun those carefree, fun times in life. Really brings a warmth to the pit of the old stomach. I feel fortunate to have had many in my life. Sounds like a lot of joy, sitting about with friends, watching 'the fire' and tinkering and drinking and eating while waiting with baited breath for your resulting art to emerge. I hope you can find that little piece of joy again when needed. Life does get hectic, and crazy and fast. Oh, to have NO worries once more. Though I hate to admit, I WAS a bit clueless too, which probably added to the carefree joys as well.
Have a nice night, and hope your project came out in one piece. (I'll go look at your blog for an answer).
hahahaha!!! I coudn't agree more with every part of your comment. You have such a wonderful sensibiltiy @ddschteinn, just love reading your comments! And I need to get over to your blog and catch up on posts too, oy vey!
btw, it all came out :-))
Oh good. So glad of that. Though I just saw it. GORGEOUS. Oy vey is right, It is SO hard to keep up. I'm supposed to be out mowing the over-tall grass right now...but here I am, commenting away. But what fun this is, rather than the mower.
Thanks for your kind sentiments, I do so love your comments as well. Very well written and thoughtful, and your humor is always greatly appreciated as well. This darn world is too darn serious for this bird.
@natureofbeing This challenge is really cool! This game is fun, i remenber when I played it when I was a little girl.. is awesome to see how artists has showed their creativity since the first painting even the interpretation of what the woman is thinking. even though that I liked the second piece, its unfortunately what happen to the first one. The look of the lioness is defiant but shy at the same time. I think that she has a good story to tell LOL. Waiting for the final touches of this piece and the next artist´s expression.
thanks @marglys, I too really enjoy seeing the interpretations and progression of creativity! thanks for supporting our endeavor and stay tuned for more.
Hello, my dear friend! Today I want to address you as a person who lives by his creativity and boldly goes to his dream. I recently got into an argument that says that creative types in large number of cases are doomed to failure. I try to defend my opinion that photography is a worthy occupation, not a waste of time. Read my top blog post, I will be very happy if you leave your comment with your opinion. It is very important for me to win this bet, because it is about my dream.
I agree...I hope you win this argument and I know you will actually :-)))
@mrblinddraw is a genius! I was all smiles as you explained how this started from the Telephone game. I remember the game and how silly the message would turn out as it reached the last person.
I'm anxious to see your finished product! This is such a suspense because of the nature of your art. I hope it doesn't crack!!!
isn't it such a great idea!! I've been so impressed by the quality art that has emerged too! Actually a little intimidating to jump in. I'm glazing it right now :-)), it came out without cracking!!! xoxo
Very cool technique! Looking forward to seeing the final piece
thanks @upheaver, loved your first piece! so serene....
really fun to collaborate with all of you great artists!
Cool idea !! Hope to see the finished product...
You will ..... Monday it will be posted and I may do one more process post if there is something interesting to show. Thank you for your support
Aww that was a shame the first one cracked. What a cool idea to riff off of the other's work. Will be cool to see how this goes.
