Q1 Onboarding Experiment

Dear colleagues and witnesses, happy new year!

I want us to onboard a lot more people this year, and I think the REG FEE of 3 STEEM can be reduced to 0.1 STEEM for a test period of 90 days, allowing our small fish with limited amount of STEEM to bait their friends by claiming accounts for cheap.

The wanted test result is Friends onboarding Friends.
If successful, we should see some fast real organic growth.
If not successful, return to the current status quo or debate a new consensus.

Me too. I have accumulated a good number of account creation tokens to accomplish such a feat. I was talking with @votovzla earlier today on making this more automatic so he can on board Venezuelans organically and without my intervention. Later this year I'll try to make such an app.

Later this year I'll try to make such an app.

I just need to to get good at account recovery before I do that so it doesn't bite me in the a__ later on ...

Interesting idea, @fyrstikken. I'm not sure about the 90 days but would be interested about the others witnesses feedback.

Now with that said: what I personally would prefer are more free accounts (via RC claimed accounts) and more users buying STEEM (creating buy pressure) and powering it up.

90 days is a good sum of days to accumulate data to learn from while being helpful to minnows during the period to find out what tools they know about and were to get them.

RC claimed accounts works fine too, but we keep missing the majority users which does not hold the world of steempower (yet)

Let us believe in the future by allowing minnows to open doors too.

Hello @fyrstikken. I sent 8 steem to @booster to promote a post but the upvote wasn't delivered and I'm yet to receive my refund. It has been 4 days. Please look into it.

Hey @fyrstikken, thanks for stimulating discussion. Your opinion and ideas are always valued. I'm the type that would be happy to try anything (within reason) and see if it works. My concerns of reducing the account creation price is however that it could increase spam accounts and botnets and make Steem a worse place overall.

Also once people are here, how do we retain them? We have a retention issue and the problem of stagnant steemit.com development, so it may be premature to reduce account prices. The current price is less than 1 USD so not a massive barrier to entry, and helps keep out undesirable botnets and also account name squatting, if you drop the price you may get alot of names taken off the market forever by encumbent namesquatters, which will make Steem less accessible in future.

I do like the benefits for apps though whereby cheaper account prices can help apps onboard more users, but my above concerns are also there. Looking forward to hearing more opinions from others in comments here.

Awesome @thecryptodrive

Yes that could have been a problem, but according to @gtg

newly created account will have only 0.1 STEEM burned, basically rendering newly accounts unusable (without delegating them SP anyway).

So the spam-thesis will not be a problem on these accounts unless they are powered up. On the other hand - I can make 3000 accounts for free right now and sell them to rich spammers, it is a myth that spammers are poor, they are not, and they can get as many accounts as they want anyway, you know, I am sure.

For STEEM to hold a high price, we need a lot of steemians. We need it to become super easy to onboard friends to steem, even those of us who have almost no money, but a lot of friends.

I do like the benefits for apps though whereby cheaper account prices can help apps onboard more users

Yes, it will have an overall positive effect in the entire ecosystem of STEEM.

Lets do it. 30, 60 or 90 days test period with the right tools for everyone to use.

Most spammers are poor in terms of Steem.

The majority of spammers I find almost no Steem due to the low rewards they get (I see spammers posting 30 times a day for 1 cent per post) and the fact they are always powering down and selling.

Have you seen this?

$2 USD (Via Credit Card) to create new accounts, including 15 SP delegation for 90 days. This is a great on-boarding avenue as well. Paying for accounts even if it is only $2 USD is not ideal, but it is a big improvement.

What about the retention problem? They come on board and then they will likely leave...

A slight account price creates demand for STEEM in some way as well; dropping the price reduces utility somewhat.

If others are interested I don't mind doing a trial period though.

That's where communities come in to play. Here at Canna-Curate, not only are we using our Rc to set up people with new accounts with a 30sp delegation, we are setting our new members on auto vote, and making sure we stay up to date and comment on their posts. It's just the start, but as time goes along we will come up with a great and efficient system of on boarding and retaining the new users.

That's awesome, we need more people with that sort of mindset to retain users.

Yeah :) trust peoples ability to entertain each other and retain each other. Think decentralised.
This is doable.

This shortcut wouldn't work as expected.
Please note that this means that newly created account will have only 0.1 STEEM burned, basically rendering newly accounts unusable (without delegating them SP anyway).
Currently STEEM is worth $0.25, which makes accounts cheap as dirt anyway.

Is there not a workaround with giving them rc's instead?

No, not yet. There was an idea of RC pools (separate RC from SP) that could fulfill this use case.

Any idea how or is anyone closer to implementing that?

RC Pools is considered a very useful thing for SMT, so I suspect if SMT gets done they will come with it.

Not holding my breath for that, it has been talked up and about by stinc for way too long for my liking, with little to no action. Yes I have totally lost any faith I had in stinc, though there was not a lot to lose in the first place.

Yes, we know you mention it a lot.

AFAIR Steemit Inc. was positive about that, but then there was The Purge so I guess it's not a priority now.

They have priorities? sorry to seem negative, I am just used to them saying one thing and doing nothing.

That would be great. Something like CPUEMERGENCY for EOS could be created for STEEMians who needed SP to transact.

@gtg the last time I set up an account faucet it was drained in a few hours, by just a few people taking advantage.

I believe friends can delegate steempower to friends while helping them get up and running. We just need to let them have access to account creation and the tools to delegate.

I agree the current price is dirt cheap - but that can change depending on fat fingers in the marketplace.

We wont hurt by giving it a real try, you game?

That would allow us minnows to help pay for the new friends joining the platform. I really like the idea and I believe long and sustain growth will do better in the long run that account creation fees.

Yes. This will enable minnows to start onboard their friends.

Can't wait to see if this proposal can find support from other witnesses

@fyrstikken, Sounds good and effective and in my opinion this idea deserve a trial because for sure at this point of time 0.1 Steem will going to feel as Expenditure specially when we will invite people. Hoping that this idea will be approved by all Witnesses and will be live in soon in near future. This idea is really appreciated brother. Stay blessed. 🙂

Good day! Thanks for voting my posts! It is a real pleasure to receive a vote from the Steem Co-Owner :) Best wishes !

More users, means more potential investors. Yes please set this up. What else is there to lose?

I do like ideas being brainstormed.

This one would be Ineffective.... If someone is not willing to spend 3 STEEM on an account, they are certainly not willing to spend ~10-15 SP to make the account functional. Lowering the fee won't change a thing.

The solution may be to delegate RC without delegating SP which is not possible yet.

Or some other idea...

Hi @fyrstikken, how can we help! We actually need this. You know how engaged is the Venezuelan Steemian community, and we want to bring more many on board, we actually have a plan to promote BIG time in Venezuela through a social influencers network we have. Please contact me on the @Provenezuela discord or telegram: https://t.me/eosvenezuela

Hey @fyrstikken would you plz ad me to the clan/group for the new year. I am such a minnow I am going to need the help plz

I suspect part of the retention problem is that:

  1. Creators cannot see the amount of views their posts receive; subs, comments and upvotes are nice feedback, but, if you don't know how many Steemians have actually viewed your posts, it is more difficult to gauge the metrics--and the aesthetics--of the community's response to your work. I think we contributors want to know if our voices are being heard, instead of not knowing if we're yelling into an empty auditorium.

  2. I have invited other creators to join Steemit and they have told me that it is discouraging to open the Trending page and inevitably see the same "content creators" dominating the opening page with mediocre content; many times, the content of the most successful posters on the Trending page is not original work and has obviously been thrown together quickly to serve as a pretext for gaming the business side of Steemit. I understand the necessity of the crypto-speculation here, but I suspect many people did not join Steemit primarily with the intention of earning cryptocurrency; some of us do not want to deal with the unsettled issue of taxable income from cryptocurrency. I'm sure governments will somehow find a way to track purchases if not crypto-income. I joined Steemit because James Corbett had mentioned it in one of his videos on YouTube. I expected to find a great deal of high-quality content and a smarter community at Steemit and I haven't been disappointed with the quality and the wealth and variety of our contributors. Again, however, the amount of substandard posters who end up usurping the Trending page by buying upvotes, etc. really diminishes the standards for content, in my opinion. I have never seen James Corbett or Really Graceful--two reliably high-quality content creators--on the Trending page. I have, however, seen high-content creators like Chbartist on the Trending page--four times on the same page!

I hope this makes sense!

I love this idea @fyrstikken.

There is so much potential. I live in a student town and we try the best to educate people and invite them to steem.

We run even with local meetups here in Aachen to lower the barrier to enter.

Most of the time I create accounts for them, so any help like this is welcome.

Hiii friend @fyrstikken, I am a big fan and old costumer of your bot @booster, but it is 3rd time that i got problem. I recently send a bid to it but it is not mentioned in current bid round. But the other bidder who send a bid after me about 11 minutes his bid is showing in table. so what is this dude. so kindly check the problem.
