Steem On

A lot is happening on Steem, and that's great. Unfortunately, that's also the reason why I didn’t have enough time to write my updates.

Full Steem Ahead
Steem Boat, SteemFest, Amsterdam, 2016

I'm currently #1 witness.
This is a great honor and a huge responsibility.
Thank you all for your support.
Please, vote for witnesses, every vote matters.

SBD peg

I've decided to set the non-zero sbd_interest_rate, for now at 1%
Please note that currently the SBD prices on Poloniex shouldn't be taken into account because of its recurring problems with deposits / withdrawals.

Exchanges

For the same reason, it is a good idea to use exchanges other than Poloniex until it solves its issues, proves its reliability, and regains our trust. I'm not talking about not using Poloniex for trading STEEM / SBD. I'm talking about not using Poloniex at all.
Obviously, that is not investment advice.
That is just common sense in a situation in which you wait more than 2 months, while your support ticket is being processed.
To be clear: I'm really looking forward to seeing them back on track. There's still hope.

Currently, the most reliable exchanges are:

I continue to offer my help in solving various issues and implementing the best practices to increase security and reliability. I'm also looking for wider support and better diversification, which is a great opportunity for those who are willing to participate.
That is not as easy as it might look, especially when it comes to Bitcoin maximalists, but we are on the right track.

Steem self-support

Our platform is a whole new universe, full of unique, beautiful creatures, rules and mechanics. It's not easy to tame, and even if you are already interacting with other platforms, there is nothing like Steem. But fear not, among our community we have world-class experts in many fields that can help you.
If you want to use the Steem platform but you’re having difficulty with its implementation do not hesitate to contact me.

Remember, remember, the first days of November

To all those who somehow missed that info,
SteemFest2 is going to take place on 1-5 November in Lisbon.
I've arranged a 10%-15% discount at the Official SteemFest² Carrier: TAP Portugal.
I'm also donating 50% of my liquid rewards from witness updates to support @steemfest and 100% of my liquid rewards from Official Carrier related posts to @t-r-f (Travel Reimbursement Fund).

Keys: Keep them secret, keep them safe

A month ago, I published a post saying that You shall not (leak your) pass!.
Has that changed anything? I hope so, but I’m afraid not much.
There is a fix in v0.19.1 that makes the nodes reject some of such leaks, but such attempts to shield the users from the consequences of their own actions are not very effective. The most important thing is to make the users realize that they should treat passwords to online services much in the same way they treat their car keys or their wallets.
Unfortunately, such leaks keep occurring.
I just recently managed to prevent a similar situation once again by changing the key immediately after the leak and by informing the user.
The bottom line is that if you lose your wallet, you should not hope that someone will find it and give it back to you.
You should try not to lose your wallet in the first place.

Full API node

A full node with public steem API
It's available at: https://gtg.steem.house:8090

To use it in your cli_wallet, run:
cli_wallet -swss://gtg.steem.house:8090

I’ve just switched it to a machine with 64GB RAM.
The "old" one will continue its service as a lab to improve the reliability of exchanges and other use cases.

Disk IO/s

Replay finished after 5 hours.
Currently, my shared memory file for such node (without account history filtering) takes 105GB and the blockchain itself over 26GB

The node is running v0.19.1, built with:

CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE = Release
LOW_MEMORY_NODE  = OFF
CLEAR_VOTES      = OFF
SKIP_BY_TX_ID    = ON

Available APIs:

public-api = database_api
public-api = login_api
public-api = account_by_key_api
public-api = network_broadcast_api
public-api = tag_api
public-api = follow_api
public-api = market_history_api
public-api = raw_block_api

Please note that due to high demand vs limited resources I might be forced to temporarily route that traffic to backup instances, so the number of handled requests might be throttled down.

If you are running a project that depends on my node, feel free to contact me when you encounter any issues or you need a dedicated node.

I'm going to improve the whole infrastructure by implementing data services and a JSON-RPC 2.0 reverse proxy, so if your service depends on my node, please make sure that you are following my updates and that you can adapt or switch to a different node in time (I can provide private nodes if you need them).

Other useful resources

Up-to-date blockchain data

or if you prefer

Periodically updated, highly compressed blockchain data

(compatible with parallel, indexed xz)

FUD

There are some trolls wandering around and spreading FUD so I thought that I should point it out, debunk fake news and ... no. No. It would be a waste of time. There's, however, one rule to bring them all and in the darkness bind them:
Rule #1: Spammers lie.

As already mentioned 50% of liquid rewards from this post will be donated to support SteemFest2.
If you believe I can be of value to steem, please vote for me (gtg) as a witness on Steemit's Witnesses List or set (gtg) as a proxy that will vote for witnesses for you.
Your vote does matter!

Good update. Balanced tone. Reasonable information.

You continue to earn the #1 position

STEEM On !!
DaveB

Thank you :-)

Gandalf is my preferred and chosen witness for a long time now and I am never disappointed! Thank you for the helpful updates.
BTW: I am waiting to get an answer since May 2017 reg an unauthorized withdrawl in the value of aprox 450 USD in BTC, sent at least 10!!! Tickets but nooooo answer up until this day. This is simply horrible because I know I am not the only one.
@poloniex pls get it together !

🌷

I just voted for @gtg as well

Thank you :-)

Thank you! :-)

Thank you for he update and great work you do for this awesome platform!

Thank you :-)

The Gandalf Hath Spoken.

OMG! I've locked my keys in the steem account!

Currently, the most reliable exchanges are:

blocktrades
bittrex

What about bitshares/wallet and/or Openledger?

Decentralized exchanges have a great potential and I would really like to see them getting more attention, unfortunately, for that to happen larger volumes are needed.

Thank you again @gtg, excellent infos and thanks for all the effort and late nights you are spending for us. While you are my witness, I thought I would let you know that I am constantly trying to support newbies to the steemit platform, help them move from Facebook to steemit or just help them not get demotivated in the beginning. This time I am trying to get some people from Russia aboard who have a very low income (steemit could change their lives dramatically), and I will be donating all the upvote rewards to the person involved. I would highly appreciate your support: https://steemit.com/polina/@lucky.digger/my-good-friend-polina

Sure :-)

Thanks GTG for upvoting Polina and the comments. It's really difficult to get new people onto steemit, she is still battling to do GOLOS.

Please comment on my last post, would appreciate your thoughts and I am sure you will find it interesting:

Voting for a witness now 😊👍🏼

Thank you :-)

thx for sharing, very good post!

Nice to see your article my friend @gtg

I'm shopping around for witnesses to vote for and you're definitely getting my vote. Excellent write-up.

I personally have not used Poloniex and this is just dumb luck on my part as a newbie. I have accounts on Kraken, Coinbase, and Bittrex currently. I never really hold anything on CB though, it's just what I use to fund my other two accounts.

I like using Blocktrades to send STEEM to my account which I've done at least half a dozen times in the past 3 weeks because the currency has been at such a bargain price. I like Bittrex too and am glad to hear that people who actually know what they're doing think it's a good exchange.

Thank you :-)

Yep, quick comment - I've always used Bittrex and honestly (knock on wood!) have never had any issues, it's UI is a little "old school" but trades go through quickly and I can always access the platform.

Everything looks great when you don't have any issues.
But what when there are any? Then all you can count on is a professional approach of their support.
So from my own subjective PoV:
Bittrex and Blocktrades replies instantaneously.
Changelly made a full turnaround within less than 24h.
It took a bit longer for Shapeshift but still good enough.

Getting reply from Poloniex?
Well, there's a game: "Never I have ever..."

citizen kane reference, i love it !! (-:

Not without a reason you are the number one witness @gtg :)
Thanks for the update!

Thank you :-)

Cool stuff man! I don't understand a thing but it's so fasctinating!

Don't worry, you would get more familiar with the platform over time :-)

Wow great to see you are number 1 witness @gtg
I just went ahead and voted for you as witness
Great to see SBD peg has been retained now
Thank you for you great work as witness

Thank you :-)

Thank you for the update:)

Thank you for being you and notifying the rest of on here and taking care of such matters that you do. I'm talking about us who write about gardening, fashion, music, how to make a paper mache manican.....and travel :)

Sure. Please take a look at quickstart guide and frequently asked questions, especially at parts about witnesses and Delegated Proof of Stake. When you get more familiar with it, please consider voting for witnesses.

Will do. Thanks for the advice, like always :)

Thanks dor sharing @gtg
I jave just upvoted you as a witness

Thank you :-)

You are welcome @gtg
Nice to know you

Thank you dear @gtg for your updates and advices! I've just voted for you as a witness! Best wishes to you!

Thank you :-)

Thank you too dear @gtg!) I'm pleasantly surprised!)

A Took by nature, I am ever curious, impulsive, and have "misplaced" things in the past. I have become more dwarf-like in my dealings with crytptos and am ever careful with each code, each password. I make sure that no one is outside trimming the verge while I create codes, trades, and other marketplace deals. Thank you for your advice on the exchanges and crypto-security. I'm new around here and I look forward to reading more of your articles in the future. Upvoted this post and I also voted for you for Witness.
Best,
Mo

Thank you! :-)

nice to come across you and your information is a great help , i once posted my active key on the memo for a transfer and quickly removed it , question is my account at threat and should i change my active keys again?

If you ever leaked your key you should make sure to change your keys afterwards. If unsure - you can change them again.
However, please keep in mind, that as important as not leaking your keys is to not lose them. Make sure you saved your new keys in a safe place because nobody would be able to help you to recover them when lost.

thanks - i was not sure if that left me exposed - am very careful with storing them in a few places. Good to connect with you, all the best, David

I'm new to Steemit @gtg and I'm looking at which Witness(s) to vote for and I've chosen yourself. I'm learning more and more about the role of a Witness and I admire all the hard work that goes into fulfilling a role like that. I commend you with votes and a follow.

Thank you :-)

I was looking into steemit security recently, so your post was very useful, thank you! :D

I'm glad to be helpful :-)

Gandalf, I'm new. I'm not entirely sure or read up on the whole witness thing yet. However following my own trail of research and looking at comments by other Steemians I know and trust. I am giving a witness vote to you as in this post alone you have provided so much useful information. Thank you for all that you do for the community. Respect!

Thank you :-)

Keni!!!!! Hey

get to about you from the post of one of my friend @world-travel-pro and just checked your profile and you really worked hard these months.
Impressed. Thank you for sharing nice information . Voting for your witness

Vote for you.

Thank you :-)

how can I support the network? i don't have time to get voted on as witness, just want to break even on costs and support you.

Thank you. Unfortunately seed nodes providers are not rewarded by the blockchain, that's why it is expected that the witnesses who gets rewards per produced blocks would provide this infrastructure.
"Blogging is the new mining" - create original, valuable content, that's the easiest way to support the platform.
Vote responsibly for the witnesses. :-)
Good luck.

Thank you :-)

Impressive information, wish you stay always number one.
Vote for witness @gtg

Thank you :-)
#1 is no longer the case. Cadence is 3 seconds. Now I'm at #4.

Awesome sauce looking forward to reading more

Thanks for the update Gandalf and I've voted for you as my Witness. Good work, Resteemed!

Thank you! :-)

You're welcome mate.

Is there any way to get a full witness list? As a minnow witness it would be great to know my rank and be able to judge progress. It would also be a good tool for me to give my puny votes to some small witnesses

I don't know if there's a site that would allow you to look at it, but you can always write a script using steem-js or steem-python.
On cli_wallet there's list_witnesses however that just maps witness names to witness ids.
That might somewhat help:
https://steemdb.com/@chillbill/witness

Thanks for the link, very useful. Yes I can feel scripting coming on. But it seems to get to the bottom of the list would take a lot of time waiting for the tail-enders to appear and respond or not. Ill know where the bottom is when/if I get a block. :) Steem seems to be Pareto gone mad which is a shame.

Useful article, I learned something new, thanks :)

Great job likee it and upvoted

thanks for the entry !
Upvoted and followed..
@gtg

Thanks for the upvote (and no, you didn't followed me)
and... honestly, have you actually read it? :-)

Congratulations!! This is great

felicitaciones!

You're on the number one spot for a reason, my friend! Keep it up :)

Great stuff there mate :)

Come check my stuff

CHEERS !!

very interesting, thanks!

Hi. Please follow me then i will follow you.

Why would I do that? Do you have any valuable content out there? It doesn't look like you do. All I can see is begging for follow/upvotes. Try to create something original that others might be interested in.

Good advice, I do not know how to use bittrex or blocktrades ... but I will learn.
Thank you with you share ....

I ask permission, to thank you through my blog.
