Writer's block is a condition, primarily associated with writing, in which an author loses the ability to produce new work or experiences a creative slowdown.
Most of us have been there. Sooooo many topics and nothing to write about!
So you have a bit of time on your hands, and you have all these ideas in your head. You can't wait to get started! You did all your chores, and all that you have left is to write your daily post. You literally can't wait to start typing. Then you go sit in front of your computer, and you are ready to roll.... or not...
Hmmm.... and NOTHING! Not a single word comes to mind. In fact you can hardly remember how to spell the word
"word" Blank..... Nada! Nothing, zilch!
A few minutes ago you were ready to write a novel, you had all these wonderful ideas in your head and now you brain seems empty.
Not a single thought comes to mind!
Caffeine might help. So you decide to go and load up on some caffeine to help you think, and come back all charged up to start.
Still nothing........
Well, exercise helps for everything. So you decide to go and walk through the garden, because fresh air will do you good. The brain needs oxygen...and oxygen opens up your mind. Brilliant idea!
While walking through the garden you can think of a hundred things to write about, and you can't wait to get back inside to go and write down what you thought about! So you literally run back into the house to start.
Still nothing........
Maybe sitting at a desk is not doing the trick? Maybe if you move to a more comfortable room, that would get those creative juices flowing....so you move....and nothing helps, but you are absolutely determined to write! The only thought dancing around in your mind is that a writer does NOT GIVE UP so easily. A serious writer is not a quitter!
And there you sit! All dressed up and nowhere to go.....
You feel like a jellyfish.....and suddenly out of the blue, one sentence comes to mind.
Once you start, you can't stop. That fresh air and coffee literally shocked the creative juices into gear....and you write without even thinking. One sentence just flows into the next one....as if it is a natural thing to do.
Writers block is not a joke. Even the definition describes it as a serious condition...OK, not serious then...but it is a condition.
If you are serious about your writing then here are a few tips to prevent you from getting stuck.
Time for tips!
- Always carry a little book and a pen with you. If you think of a great topic to write about, then write it down immediately. Tomorrow is too late. ( I get inspired while I drive...weird??? So I just record a quick voice note on my phone to remind me of any ideas for posts.)
- While you are visiting your friend google, download possible pictures that you could use in future posts. One can never have too many pictures. (I have used a picture as a base for my posts before.)
- Planning is important! Plan your post properly. (I don't plan, because I just go and change it again afterwards) However if you want to write a proper post then planning is a fairly good idea, and will make sure that you include everything you want in your post.
- Listen to relaxing music while your write.
- Most of all....eliminate any possible distractions that will prevent you from focusing. There is nothing more distracting than the thought of an unfinished tasks or being hungry...LOL!
- Make sure you eat before you start. If you are hungry or thirsty then your mind will wander.....
If you are in a hurry, then don't write at all.
I hope this inspired some of you! If you have any GREAT ideas on what to write about, please share your ideas with me:)
@honeyscribe I am done! I have made it!
I love it! Yes to eliminating distractions. I swear I chase after every shiny object or clean the entire house to avoid actually writing. LOL!
Very nice read!
