Writing is critical to becoming a good reader. Writing is an essential job skill. Writing is the primary basis upon which one's work, learning, and intellect will be judged in college, in the work place and in the community. Writing equips us with communication and thinking skills.
Who invented writing?
I am extremely proud and grateful for the Mesopotamian' s who invented writing. Could you even imagine how difficult life would be if we could not write? No communication. Imagine drawing little pictures to try and express ourselves instead of writing words.
This is a laughable thought but in ancient times that is exactly what they did.

I don't even know how to interpret the picture above. To me it looks like some kind of warning that Aliens will soon arrive to take over the world ...

In the picture above it seems evident that they did not use any punctuation. This makes it difficult to read. Hence the need for punctuation.

Punctuation did not exist until the printing age. In the 3rd century BC, a librarian named Aristophanes just had enough. He was the chief of staff at the cities' library in Alexandria. Because there were no proper books and they had to read scrolls by the thousands, he was very frustrated to read things like.

There were also no differentiation between capital and lowercase letters. So Aristophanes created some rules regarding punctuation. It must have been a journey to read a scroll and to decipher what someone was actually trying to say.
Today punctuation is very much alive. There are certain set rules that makes life so much easier for readers and writers. Here is a fun video to watch about punctuation.
Although grammar, spelling and punctuation are very important tools, not everyone use it correctly. It is a real shame that we use so many abbreviations today. Due to the age of SMS, whats app and I believe complete laziness....people are using emoji's and abbreviations more and more to shorten their messages. It does make it easier I assume...and it is much easier to send someone a smily face instead of typing out the whole word.

Writing means sharing. It's part of the human condition to want to share things - thoughts, ideas, opinions.
Weird Al would not approve!
:P
About emojis and abbreviations, much of ancient inscriptions (Egyptian, Latin, Sumerian) on buildings are abbreviations that require context to decipher. For instance, Gn Pom Mag would translate to Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus.
Future archeologists will have equally difficult experience deciphering our emojis and abbreviations. Human tendency for laziness is a constant throughout history.
