I really admire folk like Seth Godin.
Seth's blog has been running his daily blog since 1995 (and I don't think he's missed a single day since...). Every day, he rocks up and posts. No matter what his mood. Whether or not he can be bothered. It's irrelevant. He just shows up.
Seth has allowed his daily blog to shape his ideas. This commitment to relentless execution of ideas has turned into a steady flow of books, courses and speaking gigs.
There are others like him - many a lot less well known. For example, I really enjoy the content from a guy called Nicholas Bate who had a (pretty much) daily blog. Similarly to Seth, he appears to have utilised his ideas to help shape content for his strategic consultancy business plus generate ideas for a series of books that have been published (albeit on a smaller scale than Seth!).
Also, guys like Ben Settle or Jonathan Stark who both write daily email newsletters. They keep on cranking them out. Neither miss a beat.
I admire these folk for the following reasons:
- They show up (Daily).
- They are consistent (this is hard).
- They are building a body of work (in public)
- They can shape new ideas by sharing their work and responding to feedback (positive or negative)
- They turn their ideas into books, courses and other mediums to help people (their ideas spread)
- They 'chose themselves' (to coin a Seth-ism) meaning that they just started publishing their ideas without waiting to be chosen or somehow expecting someone external to pick them and provide external verification (this is both liberating and terrifying).
I started my first blog (BusinessN2K) around 2004. I loved writing on that site. I couldn't believe that it was possible to have your own 'online publication' and I so regret kicking it into touch. Life somehow gets in the way. You 'run out of things to write'.
Yet it could have shaped my thinking in so many ways.
I learn best when I write
So here I am. Ready to start again. Wish me luck Seth and the gang!
I greatly admire such people too. I can think of a few of such here on Hive.
Great to see you around these parts Steve
