Continuation of the fantastic world of viruses

in #writng5 years ago

In spite of their great simplicity, these mysterious organisms are endowed with a very precise structure that we can contemplate with the help of the electron microscope. Some have, for example, geometric figures called icosahedra, i.e. with 20 triangular faces and 12 vertices.

Bacteriophages, or viruses that live inside bacteria, have heads, tails and fibers placed irregularly in the area of the latter. Some viruses, such as the tobacco mosaic virus, have the appearance of elongated rods with the centre rolled up in the shape of a spring. However, whatever their shape, as a whole they are nothing more than simple masses and hereditary material, surrounded by a protein envelope.

Now, friends, we have taken a good general look at the inhabitants of the microcosm, let's see what some of their activities are. Until relatively recently microscopes did not have enough power to enable us to observe these tiny creatures in action; however, some of the more insightful ancient biologists had sensed that phenomena such as milk clotting and disease could not be due to supernatural causes.

In the seventeenth century, magnifying lens techniques had evolved enough to allow to carry out the first research into microbial life; an experience that deeply impressed him. What will happen when people learn in the future that there are more live animals in a person's denture than inhabitants in a nation? Subsequently, microorganisms have been discovered, not only in human teeth, but in every imaginable place, and even in some places that are difficult to conceive.

Have a great weekend
