"I ain't gonna eat no raw rabbit. John Ladles only eats civilized food," the mercenary vowed to himself, as he shivered in his damp bedroll.
At daybreak, he quietly slipped out of his miserable bed and dressed. With only his sword, knife, and a water pail, John tiptoed towards the small creek just outside of the camp.
Once there, he set down the pail, rolled up his pants-legs, and waded into the middle of the creek. After walking several hundred yards upstream, he rounded a bend.
The man stopped in his tracks, his eyes wide. Standing in the middle of the creek was a huge black dog. Teeth bared, it had a fearsome sort of intelligence in its dark eyes.
John slowly backed away. After only a few steps, he stumbled on the slick pebbles. Sitting hard in the ice cold water, he shivered. "Good dog," he whispered.
The dog didn't move, and the mercenary didn't dare try to get to his feet.
After what seemed like an eternity, the dog suddenly relaxed, its mouth almost smiling.
The man's shoulders slumped in relief, and he cupped his face in his hands.
"AAAAAHHHHHH!!!" he screamed, as he felt something heavy rest upon his shoulder.
Reflexively, he threw himself face first into the shallow water, sputtering as he turned over. When he looked up, he saw three huge dogs, tongues lolling out in amusement.
The icy creek-water and his anger squashed down his remaining fear, and he scrambled to his feet.
The dogs stood ready but relaxed as he got his bearings. Then the biggest one, who was in front of him, snarled.
John glared back, but then lowered his eyes. "I'm going back," he grumbled, as he turned around.
After the short but wet hike, he picked up the water pail. He filled it, then walked back into camp, escorted by the three dogs.
"Did you have a nice stroll?" asked Ritzbits coldly, now wide awake.
Gingerly setting the pail next to a rotten log, the mercenary's eyes flicked around the camp. All eyes, both human and canine, were on him. He gulped, then sat on the log.
John began to unlace his soaked boots. "Uh, sure did. I couldn't seem to wake up good and proper. There's nothin' like cold water to bring a man back to life!"
Ritz casually walked over, and picked up the pail. "This sure fits the bill. You don't look so good, have some more!"
Before the mercenary could react, he found himself more soaked than ever.
Ritz barked out a rough laugh. "Let that be a lesson to you and your friends! Nobody leaves until we get to the battlefield."
Without looking up, the man simply went back to unlacing his boots.
After many hours of hiking, the party found themselves deep within a bog at high noon.
"How can you guys stand those cloaks? It's like a sweat-house out here!" declared Lofton Trueman, the leader of the mercenaries.
When nobody responded, he put his head down and pushed on, leading the way along the faint path. He picked up the pace, and was soon alone with the smallest of his captors.
"Wait," the figure ordered when the little game trail finally faded away.
Lofton leaned on a large Cypress, smiling. "Don't worry friend. Iris, is it? I know exactly where we are. There's a little stream a short distance away. Let's go get a drink while we wait for the others?"
The Deathknight looked back, and nodded. The two made their way slowly, one or the other marking a tree now and then.
True to his word, they soon arrived at a clear brook. Lofton dunked his head under. "So refreshing!"
The Deathknight knelt, and produced a small canteen. When it was about half full, Lofton took a large rock from the water. He raised it, aiming for his captor.
Immediately after he released it, a large dog appeared out of nowhere. It leapt over the water, catching the rock in its powerful jaws before it could hit its master.
Lofton drew his sword, and silently charged at the dog.
The Deathknight pulled back the hood, to reveal long flaming red hair, and young feminine features. She spoke a single word, and her eyes turned as red as her hair.
Even more shocking, the dog began to shimmer and then grow. Before the mercenary reached it, the animal was larger than the great bears which were rumored to terrorize the villages of the Northern Wastelands.
Unable to stop, Lofton ran right into its waiting jaws. The last thing he remembered before the world went black was sailing high into the air...

I studied it at school, but school-level english in Italy is terrible, unless you go to a specific school centered around foreign languages (which mine wasn't... but I studied Latin and ancient Greek, so if we ever had to talk with some ancient zombies I may be of some help... if only I could recall something ahahah). I learned most of my english through videos on youtube and articles (mostly guides, tutorials, or gaming news), and lately I tried to improve it by speaking - ehm, writing lol - to non-italian users here on Hive and on Discord :)
The biggest downside is that my vocabulary is very limited, because I don't know how a lot of Italian words I use could be translate in Enghlish - and less-used words don't seem to be translated very well by online translators, because they usually suggest words which I have never seen used by anyone.
Also, having a limited vocabulary means that I find a lot of difficulties while reading stories like yours - or the ones written by @jfuji - which use a more refined/sophisticated (not sure if any of these words mean what I want to say in Italian 😂) vocabulary... and that's a shame, because I love reading, and above all I love reading well-written stories... and ironically in English those are the ones I read less because I miss a lot of words, lexical nuances and puns.
