Counterintuitive - Upgrading to Used?

20240201_174036.jpg

Is new always better? I know when it comes to furniture I would much rather take an old classic piece over some cheap Ikea junk, but that's just my personal preference of course.

Kind of like that song by Mickey Lamantia...

I guess I just kind of like the old stuff, especially in a world of cheap imports and flimsy plastic parts!

Since I am going to be building a new house, I will need to purchase a stove. So my dilemma at hand is do I purchase the latest and greatest oven from Whirlpool or should I go for a fully renovated classic oven?

I took a several hour road trip to Charlottesville Virginia to meet a fellow that fully renovates classic, iconic electric stoves. He replaces all such items as insulation, bulbs, wires, gaskets etc. Hence they sadly cost more than new ovens, but they sure look cool!

There are two models to choose from. First up is a Kalamazoo for $1,700…

Or a General Electric model for $2,300…

Both date from the mid 1950s, so let me know what your choice would be 😃

They both look gorgeous, but it would have to be the Kalamazoo!

Interestingly the Kalamazoo has the better looking porcelain finish.

I have always leaned to picking up used rather new, generally you can save a little and also reduce the landfill horror show society has created. While you might not be saving any money in this case - both are far too good to sit and unused and you can just see the build quality - from a time when products were built to last a lifetime not just until the Warranty expires. I like the Kalamazoo for the name and window in the door! But the General Electric has super shiny chrome knobs - ooh decisions.

Yeah can you believe the General Electric knobs are actually heavy, shiny chrome, just like the old car bumpers!

I love old furniture and the such, not that I have so much of it. My bedroom suite is approximately 50 years old. Bought it new and have had it every since. The bed frame finally broke beyond repair, so I have replaced that in the last few years. The rest is still in tip top condition since it was all wood.

I love those stoves. The Kalamazo looks a little more classic retro, but if one has a bigger oven than the other, that might help me choose personally. I kind of like the way the top where the knobs are better on the GE though, since they sit higher above the burners/working surface and might be easier to see. Either would be nice to have.

*** I wrote this comment last night, but the program wouldn't let me post it. I was really surprised just now to find what I had written was still hanging here.

Yay the comment made it through officially lol. I agree both really have a neat retro vibe. They sure knew how to build things back then!

I don't know what I'll choose. Whatever it is, I hope you make the right choice.
I guess maybe the Memorial Day sale there will help a bit.
