WHAT IN THE WORLD? - FROGS JUMPED INTO MY BUCKETS AND CALLED IT HOME?

in #amazing7 years ago

This was crazy! I've never seen anything like it!

For a while, I've had some seedling trees "waking up" in five gallon buckets of water. To avoid mosquito reproduction, I periodically empty and refill them. Every once in a while, I thought I saw something move in the buckets when I walked past, but I never figured it out until recently.

Somehow, a couple of female bullfrogs jumped INTO these five gallon buckets and took up residence! I'm really not sure what's going on here, but this is amazing! They apparently hid in the root systems when I changed the water, and avoided my detection for quite some time. Have you ever seen anything like this?

Oh sweet. Well yes I have seen it , a body of water is just a pond to a frog 😂 and with tree roots in too it would have seemed the perfect home for froggies! They will eat any mosquitoes that show up too. They are such great friends on many levels to us gardeners. You are blessed to have them. 🌴🌈💛🦋❤️

Very interesting discovery, @papa-pepper! As a former biology major, here are my thoughts on what's going on here:

(1) The fact that water does not seem to have any odor does not mean it is odorless.

(2) Being able to detect the odor of water is not terribly important for us humans. We can see quite far and detect water by looking for signs of vegetation, for example.

(3) Frogs and other amphibians die if they dry out. Being able to detect water to keep their skin moist is therefore a survival skill.

(4) The water in your buckets is not distilled or demineralized. Whatever is growing or living in the water undoubtedly produces VOCs (volatile organic compounds), chemicals which probably help the frogs detect the water.

(5) If you leave a bucket outside long enough, the water will gradually evaporate. In your mind's eye, just imagine some mist rising up off the edge of the bucket and part of it slowly settling to the ground.

Imagine smelling the delicious coffee aroma coming from this cup. We humans enjoy this beverage, so we can smell it from some distance away. Frogs enjoy different beverages, that's all!

I imagine that the frogs must smell some of those VOCs wafting off the surface.

(6) Since they are females, perhaps they also view the root system as a good place to hide their eggs?

We have a frog that has taken up residence in our riding lawn mower. We keep relocating him but he keeps coming back even though we move him further away each time.

Grey Tree Frogs are good at things like that! Beautiful creatures!

Ha ha, that's funny. They found a nice place to be and some guy has been coming along and dumping out their home every few days. That sounds like they might have cause for a renter's insurance claim. :P

Looks like they sent a friend to teach me a lesson!

That looks like it Hurt !

Ouch! Hopefully that one wasn't poisonous! Regardless, it looks like it would be painful. You ok?

LOL! Like a maid changing the sheets more like!

Just trying to find a home bucket or no bucket

Everything seems to be thriving this year! It's all the rain! I was walking past a puddle in the driveway, and noticed a frog jumping in! We have just gotten so much rain here in OK! Been a good year! Can't wait to see what winter is going to be up to!!!

Hehe. Say hi to the new neighbours XD

My family has had a toad coming by for the past 6 years at least, every summer, and this year my mother saw a toad some distance from the house, thought it was "our" neighbourhood toad and brought it back home...

The day afterwards we saw the old toad that's been coming by the house and my mother was like "wait... that's not the one I picked up yesterday !"

So yeah... we're toadnappers now 😈😈😂😂
