They existed even before Hive existed. It started out as steem basic income or something like that. They forked the basic income units with the steem/hive fork. They didn't have to do it.
Is the project eternal? Of course not. Nothing is eternal. Nothing stops the person/people managing it from selling it, or one day they need the money and just close, or the business gets into a deficit and they have to stop. Those are possibilities. There's also a possibility that Hive goes to 0.
So far, HBSI has been incredible and gave me upvotes every single post for a long time. So yeah, they are much better than all those whales who not only have ever given me an upvote, some also gave me DVs.

It wasn't the only reason. I was writing about what I was interested: Splinterlands. And it is the perfect place to write about Splinterlands because it's a game on this blockchain. Still, I have been back on making my daily posts, despite the DVs. Doesn't mean I'll do it everyday because I'm always getting 0 rewards but I'm still writing. Remove rewards for everyone and see who still write here. 99,9% of the users are gone in an instant.
There a difference between reader votes and autovotes you paid
I didn't pay anything for the HSBIs I won them. And HSBIs wasn't even 10% of the total value of my votes.

Somebody paid for ALL votes that don't trace back to the original premine. You bought or earned HP and that HP powered votes. In this case, one person submits the HIVE and designates an account, and then they get their curation back as votes.
It's not complicated, but some antagonists are willfully refusing to acknowledge that it's still curation, just layered so everyone receives their curation reward as votes.
Saying HSBI is curation is dumb, it votes but doesn't curate. Curating include the action of reading the post and giving it an apropriate share of rewards.
You can do a random dbuzz post and get few $$ hsbi vote as long as you hold enough units, if that's not vote buying idk what it is, oh my bad it's not vote buying it's "layered curation".
That's the whole issue with HSBI, you get reward even for spam/ect
That's most of Hive votes though. What's the problem with that? Auto votes uses the same stake as non auto votes.
Autovotes are bad, they dont reward the posting according to the quality of the post.
