This is far and away my favorite Christmas Movie. I like it so much that I watch it year round. It's sort of loosely based on a similar previous movie called Holiday Inn. They wanted to team up Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire again. But, Astaire begged off, he thought he was too old to play the part. So, Danny Kaye took his place as the other half of this dynamic duo. I think Bing was a little too old to play the part as well, whose gonna tell Bing no?
The other half of the quartet were played by Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen. Funny side note, Rosemary couldn't dance and Vera couldn't sing. All the female singing is done by Ms. Clooney.
It's the story of two soldiers that become friends after Kaye's character saves Bings character from a falling wall during WW II.
Captain Wallace (Bing) was a big time show biz guy before the war. When our boys come home, they team up and take their show on the road. This is where they meet the two gals, a sister act and also the sisters of another army buddy. At the club where they go to meet the sisters, hijinx ensue. They help the girls out of a jam with the sheriff and a sleazy seeming landlord.
They all meet up on the train and Phil Davis convinces Bob Wallace to go to Connecticut instead of NYC as planned.
When they get to the Inn, they discover it's run by their former CO General Waverly now civilian inn keeper. It's discovered he is in financial trouble. Our boys hatch a plan to save the Inn and their friend.
They put on their show and invite all the old people from their outfit they can find.
It's funny, light hearted and family friendly. It's one of the few movies I can watch over and over and never get tired of seeing. I usually discover new things with each viewing.
