The Authentic Tonkotsu Ramen in London /

This week, I had the pleasure of catching up with some good friends that I hadn’t seen for ages. It was one of those typical cold windy nights in good old London so we decided to go for some tasty Japanese Ramen soup to warm ourselves up!

We came to Shoryu in Regent Street where they have the most amazing ramen with many different types of varieties and flavours. Shoryu is a celebrated Japanese restaurant group, which is even recommended in the Michelin Guide. The Regent Street branch is actually it's first ever restaurant opened in London since 2012 and now there are about 10 restaurants within London in total.

This place specialises in Hakata tonkotsu ramen, which is a style of ramen made with a thick rich pork soup mixed with thin, straight ramen noodles. Both their executive chef Kanji Furukawa and restaurant owner Tak Tokumine being native Japanese, are very passionate about making the best possible quality dishes representing their hometown’s locale. That’s why the food in this place is so delicious!

The Regent Street branch is located just a quick five minutes walk from Piccadilly Circus Tube Station. Very central and convenient. The interior is quite small inside so be prepared for a small queue outside at peak times. So I would definitely recommend to book a table in advance.

The whole frontage of the restaurant is made up of a glass window from floor to ceiling. Warm and inviting as it makes the place appear quite spacious. The brick wall layout and subtle contemporary setting offer a relaxed vibe and homely “feel”.

The staff were super helpful and upbeat. Especially our waitress who served us there was great at offering us both some great recommendations. We took her advice and ordered the Tiger Prawn Tempura and the Shoryu Buns.

Starter

One of the key ingredients of having great tempura lies in the batter. The Tiger Prawn Tempura from this place is simply the best! The skin is so crunchy, light and non-greasy. The tiger prawn inside was fresh and packed with juicy flavours, so yummy!

12.jpg

The Shoryu “Hirata Bun” was also to die for. They offer three types including pork belly, soy marinated chicken and grilled halloumi. We opted for the Pork Belly and Chicken. Oh my god, the buns are so fluffy and filled with succulent juicy pork! It actually reminded me of our Chinese Cha Sui Bun, lol. The waitress told us these homemade buns were made daily at their bakery all from natural ingredients. Hence why they are so incredibly tasty!

Main

Our mains just had to be one of Shoryu’s signature ramen noodle dishes! It was a rich, thick tonkotsu broth that had been cooked for 12 hours. Topped with juicy pork belly and double nitamago egg.

I had been craving for this ever since I stepped foot in this restaurant, lol! Well, it certainly did not disappoint! The ramen noodles were silky smooth. Absolutely fantastic! I heard that the chef himself actually makes the noodles on-site. So that's why they tasted so fresh! It went perfectly well with the rich and flavoursome soup and the tender, scrumptous pork meat on top! This was exactly what I wanted. Real comfort food!

For the ramen soup, there are extra toppings that you can add to the dish, such as fried Tofu, Red Ginger or Bamboo Shoots.

Dessert

For dessert, Shoryu offers some traditional sweets including mochi balls, Yuzu sorbet and cheesecakes. We opted for the matcha cheesecake and mochi ice cream for sharing.

The matcha cheesecake was so beautiful to look at and again, heavenly to indulge in! Very soft with an almost velvet texture and delicate flavour. Not too sweet but just right! For people who don’t already know, the matcha flavouring is extremely popular in Asian countries. This beautiful and distinct taste is essentially processed green tea leaves that have been made into a fine powder.

The mochi ice cream came in three different flavours including green tea, yuzu and slated caramel. All being my favourites, lol. It's basically delicious ice cream wrapped in soft mochi and dusted off with rice flour. An instant lift for your taste buds. So good in fact that you simply cannot have enough!

In addition, Shoryu also serves iced beer and Japanese whisky sake along with an extensive list of enticing house cocktails. We opted for a bottle of the Japanese plum wine and some matcha tea to maximize the full experience of enjoying an authentic Japanese meal, haha!

Overall, my experience in Shoryu was the epitome of excellence. I recommend the place tenfold and will no doubt be visiting it again sometime very soon.

That's awesome, haha! Thanks for the lovely gift @yakubenko!!

Wow! This combo is one of my very favourite in the world! I know @sweetsssj would also agree and drool over this scrumptious post!

Thanks a lot for the heads-up and for opening my appetite for dinner. GREAT SHOTS!!!

Namaste :)

Thank you, @eric-boucher. I'm so glad to know we share a common interest in this type of food! Really appreciate your compliments. :)

It is all my pleasure really! I dream of such good noodles, but they are hard to find here...

Namaste :)

Hey Rea! I live in London too! I haven't heard of this place yet, but it looks amazing! Definitely going to try some of those buns soon... 🤤

I heard of Ramen very recently, at Steemit to be exact. I had never heard of it before. But I think there are also Japanese restaurants in Rotterdam how to serve this dish. I ask Mark. It looks more than delicious. Alle the other dishes too, I must add.

Hello @clio, I love Ramen and hope you have a chance to try it soon. :) Thank you for dropping by!

Damn, the ramen looks better than the one I had yesterday. :-)

As always it's been a pleasurable read.

If Tonkotsu is your thing then I definitely recommend you to make a visit to Bone Daddies (although I find their soy ramen better) and Kanada-Ya. I personally find them both more competitive in price and taste. Especially Kanada-Ya - I'd rate it as the best ramen place in London.

As a part of a series, I'm actually thinking of writing an article about different ramen places in London - would you be interested to read it by any chance?

I heard of Bone Daddies too, just haven't been around to try it out. Now that you recommend it, I would definitely give it a try, lol. I would love to read your article about different ramen places in London, just send the link this way. :)

Glad to hear it! :D

It might take a while (it's hard to work with one stomach you know...) so here's something else in the meantime...

Yum, looks greaat!

I'm drooling. I am beyond jealous looking at all these pics.

I felt hungry while writing up the article, lol.

That looks amazing! We have very few Ramen places in Oklahoma. But, when we were in Chicago, there was a great Ramen place in China Town. They had something called Hell Ramen, which was very spicy, If you could eat the large, level 4, you got a free t shirt. I wimped out and went for the two which was excellent. Anyway, this looks much more sophisticated than most of the ramen we get here in the states. Beautiful imagery, well written post. Made me want to go down the Asian market and pick up ingredients! Thanks for the great post!

Hello @markrmorrisjr, the Hell Ramen sounds awesome! If I am ever in Chicago, I would love to try it, lol. Thank you for dropping by!

Thank you so much for this post @rea, I live in London and I never knew about this place. I have to go and give it a try, it looks delicious and very authentic!

Thank you. :)

Someone else mentioned you should be paid for reviewing restaurants, 100% agree. If you love travel, you may like my similar introduction. I traveled to Louisville, KY for the funeral of Muhammad Ali.

Hi! Nice to meet you :) I'm new to this social platform but already found great value in your post! Thank you.

Gonna try Shoryu in Regent Street for sure! The selection of ramen looks very appealing with the different types of varieties and flavours.

Do you think there is any difference with the other 10 restaurants within London?

Thanksss.png

Wow... I love it.. Thanks for sharing @rea

the food is very delicious I really like. but do not forget also sinngah in our place that is aceh indonesia we have a very delicious food menu also unfortunately if skipped.Gulai Kambing.jpg
Aceh's goat goulash has a distinctive flavor, because it uses the typical flavor of Aceh. cooked using a large iron cauldron and kept in the heat. This means that whenever you order goat curry always served in a hot state, his goat meat was tender and not smelly. You will also be served minced chopped meat mixed with onions and crushed peppers and lime as a complement to goat curry. If visiting Banda Aceh do not forget to taste this one dish.
