Brownies with Chocolate Ganache - Lori's Cookbook

in #cooking4 years ago

It was my younger daughter's birthday a couple of weeks ago, so I made her a birthday cake from a great brownie recipe.

This is my entry for this week's @foodfightfriday challenge.

Brownies

Cream together:

  • 1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
  • 1 cup sugar

Beat in:

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Stir in:

  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder

Spread in buttered 9x9 inch square pan.

Bake at 350 F for 25-30 minutes.

While the brownies are baking, make the...

Ganache

(Ganache is a fancy term for a chocolate icing, especially a thick one. Yum!)

Beat together:

  • 3 Tablespoons butter
  • 3 Tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Stir in:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

At this point, I actually had a bit of a mess and couldn't see that it was going to turn out right. I was reminded about how my mother used to talk about how making frosting was a delicate art. Sometimes, she needed less powdered sugar and more liquid and sometimes, it was the other way around. It has to do with humidity - and Wyoming is very low humidity most of the year. So...

Tablespoon by tablespoon, I added some:

  • milk

That did the trick. Now, it looks like ganache.

Now to wait for the brownies to finish baking...

And take them out of the oven.

While the brownies are still very warm, spread it with the ganache so that it melts to make a delicious glaze.

Since it was my daughter's birthday, I put a bunch of garish sprinkles across the cake (ones that I can't eat so that I wouldn't be tempted to eat any!)

And there we are, one brownie-turned-birthday-cake!

Great recipe, I love brownies better than cake, so you had me on your post's title. Nice job Lori.
Happy Birthday to your daughter!!

As I normally do, I let her choose what she wanted. I agree though, the texture of brownies has more substance unless you do the fruit cake like the British do. (That's never been my style - except for Christmas.)

Thanks for stopping by!

That looks so good - I am certain my granddaughter would love to taste it - she is only 4 but she very well knows what she wants and chocolate cake is definitely her favorite - I am actually not much of a baker but who knows I might try this one out and invite her over - she would really love that :)

Hee, hee, hee... sounds like a good thing to do when you give her that lovely dress you're going to make her... make it a tea party or something!

And yes, 4-year-olds know exactly what they like - no arguing with them either!

Thanks for sharing your creative and inspirational post!

I love brownies @viking-ventures. Those look so tasty and easy. I like how you took the receipt and made mini side-by-side cards for easy reference. Great dessert any birthday party would welcome. I'm copying the recipe so me and granddaughter can try it out.

Thanks for sharing, and hope the party turned out great. P.S. I'd scrape off all the candies first. Have a great rest of your week.

Thanks! I'm glad you find it useful.
We didn't do a whole lot for the party this time, but we enjoyed ourselves anyway. The birthday girl loved her cake, and that was the most important part.
And yes, I could have scraped off the candies, but I'm trying to stay off the carbs anyway, so it was a good excuse to put on something I can't eat. :-)
Thanks so much for stopping by!
