Taking a look back at steemit: knowing the past, present, in order to prepare for the future. Newbies, know the history of steemit before posting that shitpost

Now I know many may be wondering what exactly I deal on, so for the record, I deal with Cryptos, music and research. Diving deep into topics of interests, I'm also interested in knowing the universal truth, to understand and to find a meaning to life.

Today isn't a particularly important day on the steem timeline, but as much as I like to talk about music and Cryptos, I also love learning from past events. Coming in strong as a hard hitter and an alt fact warrior, I've had my share of arguments both on steemit, discord and steemit.chat.

Just like a masochist loves the pain, so do I find pleasure in research and analysis.

I remain committed to community building,

Even though I'm strongly opinionated at times.

In the time since passed

According to the steemwhitepaper, steem is ;

  • an incentivized, blockchain-based social media platform.

On 4 July 2016, users were rewarded for the first time and this was when everyone saw steemit was real and working, fast forward to December 2016, and suddenly, steemit is in disarray, massive power downs and payouts.

Posts like this : steemit the advanced ponzi began springing up, and many justified their actions by the fact that the steem price crashed to all time lows, where it stayed till march 2017.

As a result of the crash, many users stopped posting, essentially starving the community of off content and threatening to unhinge all that had been worked for.

Users such as @sweetsssj, @papa-pepper @pfunk amongst others are to be commende for not giving up on the system when the future looked bleak.

A present worth fighting for

Not so long ago, around march 2017, we were shocked with the resignation of @dan, @dantheman from steemit.

When two elephants fight, the grass suffers

an old proverb in my country meaning, when leaders fight, their followers and the system suffer

There had been several fractures between Ned and Dan, and this; whether willingly or unwillingly, among other factors, lead to a hefty drop in the price of steem over a period of about 6 months, dropping to all time lows, before picking up shortly after the resignation of Dan.
image
(Of cause we know now that @dan is still posting, posting about EOS,flagging as well)

In the month of April/may,
Steem took third place in a BTCC contest, besting a pile of coins, and only failing to best over etherium and monero.

Strong pushers and voices of steem there included @thecryptofiend @ehiboss, and I believe @aggroed was also involved, I of cause did my part and voted as well.

This competition helped boost steem to all new heights and for the first time in a long while, growth became exponential, along with the rise of bitcoin and every other major currency, steem was heading towards its pre-crash levels, when problems with poloniex, blocktrades and a host of other sites started.
image
These new problems have been the bane on the growth of steem for over a month now, as new users try to find their feet, and old users initiate power down.

it looks like we may be heading for another hefty fall in price like last year.

A future of honor or disgrace awaits

No one knows the future of crypto currencies at the moment, no one knows the future of steem.

Out of 200 top steemians, 63 are currently powering down, a significant amount when you realise that whales hold 70-80 % of all the steem. 63 people moving so much steem, as well as a ton of dolphins and minnows, could spell disaster for the steem price in the near future.
image

couple that with the fact that bitcoin's fate come august 1 is currently unknown and we have a chaotic mixture of uncertainty in our hands.

Many minor problems have now become major;

A prominent writer known as @surfermarly just left steemit due to the attitude and hatred exhibited on the platform.

New comers, having no idea of the dealings and history of steemit push into matters beyond their control or understanding.

Spamming on high gear, as new users try to get followers, and old whales and dolphins selfishly upvote their comments and not the posts.

All these and many more (e.g current whalewars going on in certain quarters) will have some effect on steemit's reputation in the future and as users it is our job to resist a bad name.

It isn't all bad news though, over the last year, sites and apps dedicated to the steem blockchains have emerged, help have arrived for minnows in ways not conceivable a few months back, projects have been set up to take advantage of the steem.
Discord
Steemwhales.com
Steemit.chat
Steemdb by @jesta
Steemdown.com by @bitcoiner
Minnowsupportproject by @aggroed
Randowhale by @randowhale
Whale shares
Minnow boosters
Steemd.com
E-steem by @good-karma(which I'm using for this post)
Vessel by @jesta
Telegram groups etc
And many other sites and projects have come up, taking advantage of the steem platform.

the ability to make steemit a responsible site like quora or linkedin is in our hands.

the ability to make steemit a dumpster like 4chan, tumblr or memecenter, is also in our hands.

The choice is ours as users, to create a habitable community, or destroy ourselves due to gread and hatred.
Thanks

Amazing post, I always said to myself that in business... they will always be speed bumps and nothing is smooth road. Looking forward for part 2. Great post :)

speed bumps ? definitely the future awaits us in here, thats for sure, though I do hope everyone is at least a bit prepared for Aug 1, that seems the most important event in crypto space right now

Interesting for me as a newbie. Thanks!! Read this @mfoeme

no problem, read on steem on!

Outlook varies depending on short or long term views. I say build it up like a scaffold to the sky.

Instead of stepping on those below us to get to the top, we can toss them a rope and pull them as we rise. This community is so important to so many and not just for financial gain.

Despite the difference in minnow, whale, dolphin we all eat from the same table. People from all walks of life and all regions of the globe have equal opportunity to participate and prosper.

Great info! Thank you :)

No problem bro, I see your point and acknowledge your reasoning, if only all could think like this, but the default behavior of man is to pull other down, while we climb to glory, the differences exists because we choose to acknowledge it.

Great look behind the curtain of Steemit, there will always be issues when a large number of individuals with different thoughts get together, but I believe overall this is still a great place to be and have enjoyed the people here, Steem On!

Exactly sir @makecents, steemit is the first of its kind! a great social experiment that many, for the first time are starting to grab.

Interactions with different users have never been so lively, ive met and spoken to tons of people, whales, dolphins and minnows alike.

steem on

I think it's foolish whenever people leave steemit, there's all this potential for extra money. Nothing which yields potential for extra money should be left, and for the most part steemit's a really good site with a diverse following. It was foolish for that one writer to leave over "attitude and hatred", what a snowflake. I'm a full on Nazi, hated all over the internet and the idea of leaving hasn't even crossed my mind. Some people aren't fit for the internet I guess, I haven't even experienced hatred and attitude here yet. The people here are generally decent from what I've experienced.

Hmm, well everyone is allowed to run their own decisions, she left because she could not handle it anymore, or for other reasons undisclosed, whatever the case may be, shes gone. Not everyone has a skin made of adamantium. :)

yeah steemians are generally nice, just dont get o the bad side of @pfunk or any other gate watchers
