Hello. I felt really good about my post yesterday.
I was spot lighting some of my favorite List Nerds Mails.
It was pointed out to me that these mails are a little different from ads and maybe I shouldn't call them that.
After some reflection I can see the point.
The term "Ad" has gained a negative connotation over the past years and always mean "Buy my Stuff".
With List Nerds they are called mails to get away from this negative meaning.
There are many changes that are being made in marketing and language is one of the things that need to change.
Because people post about all kinds of things it is more appropriate to call them Mails.
In the future I will make sure and call them mails.
How do you think language is changing marketing?
I have noticed that many words are getting new meanings now and others are getting more negative meanings.
Do you think the use of the word "Ad" is outdated?
Let me know in the comments below.

Yes I think all of those hard boiled sales being a numbers game are old attitudes left over from the 80s. The funny thing is that the truly great Marketers like Zig Ziglar or Jim Rohn have never used those high pressure by my stuff tactics which is why their instructional materials are still relevant today.
You are probably right. Maybe it has just been a misconception about how to market products
I like the term content more. But then again, I think 'inbound marketing' is a much more effective way to generate business. An ad is just...Pushing, which inbound marketing like content creation is pulling.
That is a great way to differentiate. I like the term "inbound Marketing"
Maybe that is why people don't respond well to affiliate ads, Because it is all pushing.
A rose by any other name...
If the focus of what someone sends out is "Buy My Stuff" or "Give Me Your Email Address so I Can SPAM You", it doesn't matter what they call it...I'm still not interested.
Yes I think that is the general problem and challenge with affiliate marketing.
People are tired of Pitchy Ads
Yeah, Tom, I am not so sure that ad is a bad word. We have seen a difference in marketing since #ListNerds relaunched but even with the majority of mails being about blog posts, these are still essentially people advertising themselves in order to get more visibility. I guess we should not get caught up with terms. But hey, I gave you fodder for a new blog post so that works out well for you.
Thanks for your comment
Language is so powerful, especially when society's patterns of behavior and perceptions evolve to change the meaning or cultural feelings of words.
The word "ad" definitely has some negative connotations associated with it, I like the idea of referring to our Listnerds communiques as mails, because even though we all earn from them in one way or the other, a lot of them aren't trying to sell anything at all, but rather are offering information. It's pretty interesting to see the how marketing is evolving thanks to the conjunction of affiliate marketing and blockchain tech, I am excited to see where it goes!
And thanks for such a thought-provoking post!
I agree. It will be interesting to see what happens. Thanks for the thought provoking comment
The word has gained such a stigma here in Iceland that i dont think it would matter if you said "Ad" or "Rape" Both

would be counted as equally invasive of one's privacy and personal life.
Marketers seem to try to accommodate to this by "home presentations" or"booked "events" where the advertisers, (seekers of selling service) make sure inevery way that the "guest" (client), is there to enjoyy" and receive only gifts.
There might be some "light advertising"....
Great "pondering" mate!
Eythorphoto!
Wow that is interesting. I wonder why the word is so negative in Iceland.
Thanks for the very interesting comment
I don't think 'AD' is a dead word. I think there will always be ads. They may change in media, format, etc. But there will be ads.
You are probably right but in affiliate marketing I think the term has a bad rap
I do believe over time all things change even words used to describe ads. Such as email marketing, lists, and splashpages for traffic exchanges. Just my thoughts could be I am wrong.
Yep the times are a changing.
I agree, many words have been invented and also changed in my lifetime.
I am 61 so I have seen some big changes in my lifetime

Thank you
I don't think "Ad" is necessarily bad but yeah, the distinction seems important. I do see myself sharing a post as a sort of ad, but the conclusion you made about the name makes more sense to me. Mails do include ads, but in the case of posts, it's like a personal letter in a way.
I might think about it more and come back to you lol!
Thanks . I think using Hive makes them more of a mail than an ad.
The Ads are obvious because they are selling something.
