First Post and dtube video!!! Soak Pearled Barley Before Cooking

in #dtube5 years ago (edited)

Barley is a tough grain and soaking it before cooking definitely improves the texture. You see the first time I tried it and this ended up to be a LOT of barley when fully cooked. One quarter of this amount would have worked just fine.

This is Sharon @fitinfun and you are seeing my first post and video for @dtube on my new account - @fitinfunfood.

Why do I have an account for food now?

  • The topic is huge and would take over fitinfun if I let it
  • people want to know about my food since I am a weight loss success story
  • I do not like talking about food and this might force me to do it.

I love the food I eat now that I am thin and healthy for the last 8 years. But in the prior 50 years, food was a constant battle. I really do not like to talk about it. What I eat is not what you need to eat to be the same healthy person as I am now.

But I have many videos and photos about food and information about the steps I take that keep me thin now. So I have challenged myself to post to fitinfunfood and try to get my knowledge out there. I hope you like it, and here's to a very healthy 2019!

So excited for you! This is going to be fun watching you help us with food. I actually love barley, but it does not love me.

Really - Please tell me why. This is one of the things people use when they can't eat wheat.

I have avoided it because it was a wheat! Hmmmm, i must look into this because i love barley stew.

Here is great information about barley from my favorite food site.
http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=127

Not a wheat! But it does have gluten. Get a small amount of organic from a bin and give it a try.

FYI - I can eat wheat a long it is not US Grown! There is all kinds of trouble with US Wheat not present in other country's supplies.

I'm good with Mexican, European and SE Asian, but the US version makes me sick with the exception of some organics.

I have heard that as well. We had a friend who went it Italy and she ate all types of wheat flour items. I guess i should rry that out.

Yes, this is also a common complaint of people going the other direction too. All of the sudden they cannot eat bread in the us and had no trouble before where ever they live.

I don't touch what we have here in wheat flour. It makes me so sick. O wonder if the coolkies made in Europe would be good for me to eat. Just now thought about that! I will need to stop at World Market and find out.

Happy New Year @ fitinfun! So cool that you have a new channel for food topics. How did the barley turn out? #zap

Fantastic! If I had not made so much! I have learned to only start with a quarter cup dry, since it really expands. I love the flavor and it reminds me of my childhood.

Happy New Year to you too @bennettitalia. I missed your prompt contest, but I hope you got a good one. I am committed to 1-2 posts a day here, so I hope I do it! Now I have a place for it and will not have to mess with my main account. thank you so much for stopping by, and stay tuned :)

I definitely will! Barley reminds me of mushroom barley soup from Eastern European diners in the East Village in NYC when I was growing up :)

My prompt contest runs 5 days/week, every week, so you have plenty of time to enter :)

All barley soup is my favorite lol. I will be sure to get in on your contests! Thank you for the head's up :)

All barley? Do you mean a soup that's made with only barley? Or do you mean any soup with barley in it?

Any soup with barley and any other food with it as an ingredient. I might be addicted!

Sounds like a pretty healthy addiction! <3

congrats on this.

Thank you very much. I feel happy to get this far!

Well done!! It is a good idea to keep different interests separate. I just find it hard to deal with too many accounts....

And I have cooked lots of grains where it ended up way too much. Millet is especially crazy for that...

#zap

I know! This is a big leap for me, but food is just so huge and people really want the posts. I would never do anything else on my fitinfun account. And than I do not do the food topic justice anyway.

Millet! Love it. I will remember to post on it. and yes - millet explosion lol.

Congratulations @fitinfunfood!
