Hashing: Don't count on it being flat

in #exercise3 years ago

For many Hash chapters, they have no choice but to do urban runs. This was the case in NYC and Chicago when I did runs there but for the most part the objective of a Hash meetup is to connect with nature. If you do join a Hash run somewhere in the world and it isn't in a major metropolitan area, you can bet there is going to be some serious off-roading going on, so you better come prepared for such a thing.

It is quite rare that we have this sort of incline / decline but it does happen, and you need to be prepared for it when it does happen. I have seen people turn up to these events wearing flip flops and while I'm not saying you CANT do this terrain with that sort of footwear, it certainly isn't going to be very easy.

The entire idea behind Hashing is to get out into nature if it is at all possible. Chiang Mai is a city of about a million people, so in order for us to get out into nature like this, there is always a bus ride involved. This can be problematic in other parts of the world such as NYC because the nearest nature is probably multiple hours ride away. I suppose we are lucky in Chiang Mai in that regard since the city is surrounded by mountains and tons of nature.

We do try to take into account that there are some older people in our groups so when we do have situations / places such as the first ravine you see there, we will create an alternate trail around it. Plus there is always the option of turning around and going back to camp since we rarely will put these inclines near the start of a course.

The whole event is supposed to be fun and a bit of exercise for everyone involved, regardless of their own level of personal fitness. Just remember to come prepared because this is not a walk in the park... ok, maybe it is in the literal sense but it can be a rather "extreme" walk in the park.
