Warning: Social Media is destroying the social fabrics of our Society

in #family6 years ago (edited)

Call it Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Tweeter, Snapchat et al - in fact, tools created to help us connect and communicate with one another have started to erode the social fabrics of how our society works. The conundrum, however, is: do the creators / management of such tools really care for our wellbeing or are they planned tools created to control and exploit us? Here are some few points:

Pic Source

Physical Socializing: Most of us that are older were blessed because we go out to play with friends and family members. Conversely, however, thanks to social media and video games (unfortunately) our young people do not care to play outside- rather when they visit themselves, almost all have their smart phones where they continue their group chats, facebook, jokes, instagram pictures, snapchat , whatsApp , video games etc. Most seriously, they tend to be aggressive if their parents take the tools away from them due to the addictive nature of those tools-resulting to less mentally /physically fit children.

Control mechanism: do you know that most centralized social media platforms like facebook and tweeter are used by central governments to spy , control and send out fake information’s? Moreover, facebook, for example, do use our data’s for their own commercial purposes without giving us a dime!!! Thanks to steemit, most of us can earn well blogging what we love.
Moreover, most powerful people (even President Trump : POTUS) cannot do without their tweeter which means that something is wrong.

Some Solutions:

Try off your smart phone or computers for one week -very difficult because all our lives are revolving there-at least that is what our brain tells us . Moreover, you can create a balance ie time to play with friends and family members and time to be online. Do not buy smart phones and video games for children because they are fragile. Most importantly, avoid sharing all your datas on social media platforms especially your family / children pictures and teach your children how to play outdoors.

I strongly agree with you. We young people have big problem of social media addiction which you explained well here. Thanks a lot for all these informations..it made me to think twice

what a good resolution my young friend...you make this granny proud of you ....

Welcome and I hope you take care of yourself

I don't really agree yes it's addictive but every generation had something.
With social media I can keep in touch with a much much bigger group of people that sometimes live way to far to be in contact with. It's just more efficient.
It is the same for ebay, blokchain, messenger, email, online banking etc. I save so much time with doing everything online that I got more time for friends.

Besides old people watch tv/radio and newspapers they are much more controlled by the government than social media/internet.

Good point however I disagree with you on the notion of addiction. Fact is , we have more addicted people now in social media /smart phones than old school radio, newspaper and Tv

True last generation had smoking and drinking that went down big time.

ah,.... but the quality of interaction in the pub at nights, and having a ciggy was much better!

I actually feel sad that isn't a lifestyle anymore. (not for me, I'm past all that, but for younger generations)

I don't know i'm 30 and there still lots of places for great conversations! Beerhalle for examples :) Nowadays there are mindblowing lightshows that the older generation missed. those lightshows on trance/ hardcore parties are just incredible.

Stop spamming my posts with these pictures...am not interested.

psst....be gentleman enough...just be tolerant...from a grandma

well I agreed with you in some points but the solution's is not to stop using the social media or not buying video game to our kids but we have to control our self and our time and we should know when we use this social media and when we have to go out and spend some time and now days even when we meets friends outside some are still using the smart phone and some time we are putting rules to our self that no one will be allowed to use social media during our enjoyment

Good point, I agree. Thanks for your comment

I remembered when video games and tv was destroying society, I’m getting old lol

nobody gets old just getting virtous

Hahaha same here buddy, thanks for your comment and congrats on your 70th rep

Yeah, it's gotten out of hand. It's the anti-social social media. No one actually talks to one another in real life.

Hell, was I was a kid I remember waiting on line at the grocery store and at least half the time conversation would strike up among patrons as they waited. Now everyone has their nose in the phone the whole time.

Good point bud, I agree with you...diffrent times indeed

I couldn't agree more. There is a misbelief that social media is designed to connect us. Which is a great idea and to some degree is true. But the real design of social media is to hold our attention for as long as possible. The ringer we scroll the more advertising we are subjected to and results in more profit for the media platform owners. They will sell everything sex, food, travel, health etc in a way that keeps us locked to the screen.

Thank you greatly for the concious content. I think we are changing the paradigm here on steemit everyday.

Welcome and thanks for your comment.

Agreed !! Upped and resteemed @charles1 !😀👍👍👍

Thanks a lot...hope you are well

THIS!!!!
I've taken only a handful of forced selfies & food pics in my entire life. I honestly don't understand why people insist on documenting rather than enjoying the moment.
Back in the day (In Kenya) we had a day where a photographer would come by, we had to prepare & wear our best clothes.
To this day I look at them & remember that day coz it was special.
Nowdays people are taking over 500 photos a year, really?!!?

Thanks for the post. Here's an upvote

Welcome and thanks for sharing your story

Strongly agree with you dear. these platforms are very dangerous for our generation. they are time killer. valuable post. keep sharing your knowledge like that. stay blessed <3

Welcome and stay blessed too

I read earlier today that 98% of Facebook's revenue comes from advertising - which reminds of a point Noam Chomsky made about the media - the primary relationship is between the media companies (Facebook) and the companies who pay them --- the 'audience' or 'prosuming' users of Facebook are very much secondary.

Good point indeed, I agree. Thanks for your comment

I am 30 so I have seen the change in technology and how it is affecting my generation and the newer generation - I think technology is a great thing it is our relationship with it and how we use it that needs to change. I often see people out for 'social' gatherings and they are all on their phones!

I like to have rules around my device use such as no devices while eating -
we usually put them in a seperate room, and also no phones in the bedroom. It is easy to let our phones and devices control our lives. I also agree that centralised social media is just using us for data mining and to sell our data (I listen to a great podcast called 'Note to self' which talks about this alot.

One of my first posts on Steem was actually about how I had a week device free and what I learnt:

Thanks I enjoyed reading your article

Good points indeed, thanks for your comment

Very much true said Sir @charles1 social media i no doubt a blessed thing in our life but we are getting depended on it we have almost forget the outdoor atmosphere and when we meet (friends) we keep on surf either net or get busy with other social media things. If this continues childrens of next generation will totally forget the outdoor games

Good point indeed, hence why the discussions are needed

we are hiding behind selfies and negative social media behaviour instead of promoting human interaction and kindness..

Good point indeed, thanks

I agree. As a young person it is very frustrating as most people's social lives revolve around Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook. In my generation the more likes you get the "cooler" you are. It is really annoying because I just want to meet people authentically and enjoy their time in real life instead of competing in this insane race for social media likes and followers. I do like Steemit, however, as it gives an honest way to write about what you want.

Good point indeed, thanks for sharing

Know this sounds crazy, but we think you're right on all of them except Twitter and Snap.
Snap is actually built from the ground up based on maximizing your privacy, and their mgt has taken care to protect that (as much as a communications app can). It's also mainly fun, and is no more going to destroy the fabric of society than the telephone did (or the cellphone, own one of them?).

but look, we hear you, in the hands of certain people, some of this new social networking stuff is the destroyer of worlds. Look no further than all the gaming which occurs on Steemit. But Steemit isn't ALL BAD either, you can get good advice on investing thru Steemit sometimes, like this:

Good points indeed, thanks.

Social media and mobile advanced indeed be the purposes of the main people in the world in the present this. But with the phone is, may we can use it for positive things only and do not we use to the things that negative, which can damage the ourselves and our family. Hey @charles1,
I do NOT completly agree with you,
Social media nowadays just is part of our societa and social interaction...
Greets

Good point, however there is a negetive side to it too. That was the point

lets keep this discussion going, foundations are being laid for big social problems next gen.

We go out in nature daily when the weather is good, if it wasn't for my back issues we would get out more in the cold weather but that is when my back issues act up the most so it is more difficult, but we still do other stuff to get away from tech.

Good point, thanks. I wish you a quick recovery

Well said, society have addicted though depends area of usage because it has positive and negative impact depend area of usage, there is parental guidelines for children that have not attain maturity age.

Good point indeed however I do see some parents giving their 5+ years children smart phones ...bad idea indeed

I really think that the fault is not social networks itself, it is a question of each person, the use that is given to each tool. Both parts of socialization are important, face to face as well as online and remote.

Good point...thanks for your comment

A bit of irony to disparage social media on social media isn't it?

what is your point

Can't agree more

yes.i am agree with you.

It is a real true.

It is quite hypocrite to write about this while you post this on social media yourself.

How should I post it? send a letter to all around the world? Lol

Hahah yeah, that is what you call an investment and making a statement! Good luck :)

yes .. even can destroy the relationship to our family also ..

berguna that nyoe informasi

strongly agree!!!!!! since i found steemit i minimize my use of FB ...you are correct we dont get a dime ..matter of fact its us who pay to give them dimes....i really hope and pry restrictions or a law will be passed in our country restricting the purchase of cellphones by minors....i pity the children ...as you say they dont have the time to play ith neighbors as we do then....

I believe its not only affecting your country but the whole world as well...but its more felt in the US..incidents of mass shooting to innocent civilians and students is a classic example. The internet games is ripe with this, wanton ,senseless and guiltless killings

I hope and pray that this article is wrong, but sadly I know its the cold hard truth.

Thank you.
