Nutrition Myths: Egg yolks are bad for you!

in #fitness4 years ago

This one has existed for most of my life and only the type of people who were extremely dedicated to whatever the guru of the week was saying listened. They also happened to be quite well off financially and were the type of people that could afford to throw out the yellow bits, which in my mind is the best part of the egg anyway.

I don't know why the media and particular health groups are always on the offensive to go after perfectly healthy foods, but they have been doing it for a long time.

You may remember hearing that eating egg yolks increased your chances of cardiovascular problems and affects the body's ability to process cholesterol... probably a thing or two about LDL and other such stuff.

The problem is that the the study that came to these conclusions was called a "cohort study" which is a lower-tiered type of study that is purely observational and draws conclusions from smaller sample sizes. This is a normal part of the scientific community and upon observing a particular result they will then move on to a clinical study, which is far more rigorous.

When the cohort study was turned into a clinical trial the end conclusion was that egg yolks had no connection with cardiovascular disease outside of people who have adverse reactions to cholesterol in a general sense.

This information wasn't shocking enough and would make the various publications look bad so it wasn't as widely spread as the prior study... most people still believe the "egg yolks are bad" stigma today. Plus egg companies were already charging a relative fortune for the containers of egg whites to a naive population. Therefore, the very sellers of egg yolks didn't feel any sort of need to correct the untrue information.

The bottom line is that eggs are an eggsellent source of protein, fats, and other nutrients and the information about how the yolks are bad for you was massively overblown. Basically it was a crock of S**T. So go ahead and enjoy those egg yolks folks, it is my favorite part of breakfast!

i had an egg white omelette once, it wasn't for me. I actually thought it was gross and simply weird. From that point forward it didn't matter what the health benefits were, I wasn't going to go down that path.
