My family Easter tradition in Canada

in #food6 years ago

Do you celebrate Easter? From chocolate bunny to pastel-coated eggs, this holiday is just a great reason for me to spend time with my family and indulge in all the delicious food and treats involved.

Our typical Easter holiday in Quebec, Canada

Almost every year, I head out to Quebec City to join my family for the Easter festivities. This typically includes a crab dinner, cookie decorating, brunch at the Frontenac castle, a mini-barn visit and the popular Easter egg hunt.

Crab Dinner

My family on my mother’s side come from the northern coast of Quebec and at this time of the year, crab is king. Fished locally and cooked at home, every Easter we get to eat this exquisite snow crab accompanied by other fresh seafood. When you view the prices of fresh snow crab at grocery stores, we can consider ourselves lucky to have this yearly feast.

Cookie decorating

For many families, Easter is all about egg-painting and having them ready for the Easter egg hunt. We like to be a bit original and have kids decorate homemade cookies with tasty Easter decorations. Who said cookie decorating was only a Christmas tradition anyways?!

Brunch at the Frontenac Castle

Every year, we attend the most amazing brunch in the incredible fairy-like atmosphere of the Frontenac Castle. Now a hotel, the castle’s restaurant offers a mouth-watering variety of food for the legendary Easter brunch. It also has the most amazing dessert bar I have ever seen. Gigantic chocolate eggs, a cotton candy machine, fresh donuts and all the types of candy you can think of are all part of this gastronomical experience. For a moment there, you might think you ended up in Charlie’s Chocolate Factory!

Mini-barn visit

Let’s face it, small animals are cute and who doesn’t like the possibility of holding a soft little bunny even just for a while? Adults often enjoy this activity as much as the kids. Besides the typical bunnies, these mini-barns usually have chicks, ducks, baby goats and cows all seeking for that touch of love. It is a great way to remind ourselves that Spring has arrived and it’s time to rejoice of all the beautiful nature that surrounds us and how we share this planet with these lovely creatures. It’s a great time to connect with our furry friends.

The Easter egg hunt

What Easter would be complete without an egg hunt?. Although this is probably the less original part of our family tradition, we enjoy every part of it. Carefully hidden decorated eggs of all sizes are placed in every little corner reachable for the kids. Adults can help out the smaller kids and the one that collects the most eggs wins. As a prize for the winner, kids are always thrilled to have the huge surprise basket of Easter goodies.

After the egg hunt, we help the winner unwrap the basket and have fun playing with games found in it for the rest of the day.10644317_10153907589975491_6351004951252974964_o.jpg

My little pleasure

So I know what you must be thinking, Easter in my family is all about eating. Well, you’re not completely wrong, but hey, It’s only once a year! My personal favorite Easter treat is...nope, not chocolate bunnies, but....

Marshmallow chicks!

They typically come in packs of 10 and I could easily eat them all at once!

So now that I have walked you through our Easter family tradition, let me know about yours! Do you have any special Easter tradition? What do you enjoy the most about it?

I really enjoyed reading your family Easter traditions! I can see you have such a lovely family! And that crab dinner, oh my gosh... I love crab, but last time I had crab was almost like 5 years ago....... lucky you!! I have to say one more thing, a friend of mine just came back from his business trip from US and he gave me this yellow package of marshmallows as a gift!! What a coincidence. Let me go get a pic, so you'll know it's true.

Here's your favourite chicks in my place.

Thanks @anna-bella! Well, let me know if you ever come to this part of Canada during Easter and I could definitely treat you to some delicious snow crab ;) Ohhh how lucky of you! Marshmallow chicks! Enjoy :)

That would be amazing! I've had Japanese 'Matsuba-crab' but never had Canadian snow crab, ohhh it must be delicious.... I tried a few of those yellow marshmallows - I liked it! :D

Your tradition of celebrating Easter is awesome. It’s really fun to go Egg-hunting especially there’s a gift to the winner. We also celebrated Easter with family and it’s also about eating and going to beaches for family bonding.

Ohhhh you get to go to the beach?! Lucky you!!! Wow, we normally still have snow melting, haha, but at least some warm sun.

Wonderful post ..thanks for sharing...Best of luck friend ✫
