Miss. Delicious #60 : Xi'an's very own Café de Flore with a twist and then some!

in #food7 years ago (edited)

Dear Steemit Friends:

In today's edition of Miss. Delicious, we'll be visiting a new creative restaurant in Xi'an, China called Huashen no.9. Other than serving some of the best food around, you'll also have the opportunity to take up their leisure and relaxation services. This combination of food, leisure and relaxation is quite unique to Asia and is rarely seen in the West.

In case you wondered what the name of the restaurant means, it is actually the same name as the famous Cafe de Flore from France.

For me, this establishment is more than just a restaurant, it's a Cafe, a Chinese restaurant, a Western restaurant, a game room and a Spa. Because of it's broad range of services, people come here for a variety of reasons. You could meet up with friends here for dinner, a drink, dessert. Because of it's luxury setting and decor, you could also hold business meetings with clients here and then afterwards, take them to the spa.

Because of Huashen's diverse service offerings, I've had the opportunity to visit quite a number of times. Of course, with several visits, I was able to try a variety of their dishes. The people there know me quite well because of how frequently I go!

So, I'll be sharing all of the foods i've had there from multiple visits, all in one post! Hope you're ready to wet your lips!

Let's begin.

The restaurant uses an iPad app for it's menu. Ordering dishes is quick and easy.

Next up, the saliva inducing food. This restaurant takes it's food presentation quite seriously, which is not always a top priority for this style of food. I certainly welcome and appreciated effort! Most of their dishes will use petals, fruits and other colourful foods to ornament the final dish.

Here we have the Chinese Little Greens with Fungus Egg. The Chinese name for the vegetables is quite funny, directly translated, it means Chicken feather greens. I suspect the reason being that the greens looked like chicken feathers before cooking!

Simmered Beef Brisket. This is my favourite dish from this restaurant. I really like the deep red carrots that they've added. They add a touch of sweetness to the overall taste.

Crystal Iced Vegetables. This is a rather peculiar but very special dish. On the surface of the leaves, there are tiny see through bubble like droplets. You can pick them up with your chopsticks and soon realise that they are actually not droplets but actually part of the plants membrane. Under the sunlight, they glisten just like dewdrops. This is usually served as a cold dish so during the hot summer months, it's ever so refreshing!

This is Stir Fried Asparagus. I would say out of all the dishes, this one is presented the best. The taste is very fresh and free from too much unnecessary sauces. The texture is a bit crunchy, and almost tastes a little like cucumber.

IMG_1201.JPG

String beans with stewed eggplant

Chinese chives with smoked beancurd. This dish is full of flavour and actually takes up very little stomach space. The chives are quite soft and yet it's herbal taste comes through very strongly. If you have have a closer look, you'll realise it's served in quite an atypically shaped plate. In fact, all of the dishes are served in unusual shaped plates.

IMG_5763.JPG

Chilli Stir-Fried Beef

Home-made fried egg with tree fungus (wood ear).

Dried Meat. I'm usually quite a light flavoured eater, so with this being a bit salty and spicy, some plain white rice is in order.

Dried-Fried potato slices. Also one to go with plain white rice.

Knife shaved noodles with Beef. This is such a flavoursome and fragrant dish and can be eaten entirely on it's own as a main. The vegetables are cooked with the noodles in boiling water, whilst the beef is ever so tender. On the inner side of the bowl, you can see a poem. Not sure where the poem comes from but it's something you can enjoy whilst eating!

Pepper Pork Fried Udon

Steamed Fish*

Stir Fried Chilli with Pork

Sweet and Sour Fish

Sticky rice pork wrapped in Lotus leaves

Stir fried pork kidneys with chilli

Stir fried Chiba beancurd

Hot and Numbing (Ma la) Hunan style stir fried pork

Boiled Okra (Ladies fingers) with Soy Sauce

Spicy fragrant deep fried popcorn chicken

Sea Urchin congee

Seafood soup

Jellied Tofu Soup

Simmer fried pork chop

There's even sweetened Stewed Eggplant.

Panfried fish

Meatball vegetable soup. The soup is light but certainly not lacking in flavour. The meatballs and fresh vegetables give the stockless soup a real aromatic flavour.

Fried green beans in Mala style. After frying these beans in shallow oil, they are stir-fried with Sichuan peppers. Excellent dish with some steamed white rice.

Stir fried cabbage with dried meat

Stir fried chilli peppers and celery with dried meat

Egg fried rice

There are various freshly squeezed fruit juices, cocktails and even Green tea match iced smoothies.

These are Pumpkin flavoured steamed buns which serve as dessert. They've made these in the shape of pumpkins!

Matcha green tea ice cream with waffles. If you feel like just having dessert, or a snack before the other activities, then this is a great choice.

There's also these bean paste buns made in the shape of flowers.

Fruit platter to top up that five a day!

The fish is kept live at the restaurant. Some of them look quite cute actually !

This is a Chinese salamander. They are still considered an endangered species, it's hard to believe that people could eat such a cute thing!

Obviously these gold fish are not to be eaten!

On to the Spa!

With such a wide range of food to choose from, you are simply spoilt for choice. After a visit to the restaurant part of this venue, you will no doubt be a very happy camper.

As I mentioned earlier, the venue also has other leisurely activities on offer. One of the most popular is a massage at the Spa.

The main style of massage you'll find here is Thai. All of the masseuses are from Thailand with many years of experience.

Below, you can see some of the high quality massage oils and other massage products which are used in your massage.

There are many rooms, each tailored for different group sizes, and different massage functions.

Inside, the room is very spacious and has an ambient nature soundtrack to ease you into comfort.

On each chair, you can see they've provided some silk clothes for you to change into. This will help you feel more comfortable and ready for the massage.

Time to relax and enjoy the massage!

Hope you enjoyed this rather large post about the multi-function Huanshen no.9 restaurant / game room / spa. If you're ever in Xi'an and need an evening of pure relaxation as well as some of the best selections of Chinese food, then this is your place!

As always, I appreciate your upvotes, follows and comments!

Xi an looks like an interesting place. I have not been to Xi an, but had been to Sichuan, not sure if they are close to each other lol. The reason I was mentioning Sichuan because the dried meat dish from your picture there. Is the dried meat dish a dish from Sichuan or Xi an? Anyways, thanks for your sharing

It's originally from Sichuan!

Tastiest looking post so far!

thanks transisto! With so many dishes, you must have one that stands out to you?

I'd start with this one

Good choice! It's very spicy though.. hope you can hold your spice!

I´ll be with you! Would start with the same

hot and numbing? I hope your tongue was okay :D
am drooling now - for that asparagus and the desserts and all that food
how could you eat this much and yet never get a bulging tummy ?

Chinese salamander reminded me of an axolotl:

Axolotl.jpg

That looks so cute! Is that a kind of salamander too?

Actually, yes, it's also called the Mexican Salamander or "walking fish". This one looks a bit more like the guy you spotted:

1024px-Ambystoma_mexicanum_1.jpg

These creatures are so cute! I really want one!

They are an uncommon, somewhat exotic pet. But, you could get lucky and find 3 next to a dumpster aquarium, like this couple in Washington State:

让中文区在steemit日益壮大吧(♡˙︶˙♡)

是的,大家要多发中文噢:)

What a huge difference between China's "Chinese Food" and what we have here in Canada and call it "Chinese Food"

Sacré bleu! This is certainly not how I remember Cafe de Flore, lol! Although, it would have been much more pleasant to order my coffees from an iPad rather than my less than curt waiter.

And now that I think about it, a foot massage while people watching on the boulevard would've been heaven sent! Not bad ideas...

Huashen no.9 seems fascinating and your posts truly inspire! And thank you @sweetsssj for reminding me to mention Cafe de Flore in one of my upcoming Paris posts. If you hadn't mentioned it I probably would have forgotten!

Ahaha, it's the Chinese twist.

I really look forward to seeing your post about Cafe de Flore. Don't forget to tag me!

I'll be sure to!

Stunning photos!

wow.. that was fast! You are a speed reader!

Very beautiful food and pictures.

Your the best!

The food look tasty~ you make me miss those delicious food in Shanghai.

aww, Shanghai has some of the best steamed dumplings and buns, I miss the food there too :)

Very nice pictures! They make my mouth water😋

Well i'm happy i've made you hungry, don't go spoil that and snack on something though!

It's 10:30 pm here and I'm heading to bed, no midnight snacks for me. Keep the beautiful pictures coming. I'm somewhat of a photographer myself!

Upvote - You left me no option.

Thank you lucky.digger!

No worries, I am happy to be following.

Oh, man, so many delicious-looking dishes in this one… you must have been there with a huge group to have had a chance to photograph so many dishes! (The fish head was a bit scary, though.)

I'm a fan of noodles of all types, so I'd love to try those knife-shaved noodles. Can I ask you what the Chinese name is? I'd like to ask my wife if she's familiar with it.

Yes! This place actually accommodates large groups of people very well. They have some really huge tables. Chinese people also love to eat in large groups and share the dishes.

If you're a fan of noodles, then you will absolutely love Xi'an, they have some of the best noodles in the world.

The knife-shaved noodles are called 牛肉刀削面
Is your wife Chinese?

Is your wife Chinese?

I don't want to give too many details for privacy reasons, so I'll just say she's more familiar with Asian foods than most Americans. :) Great for me!

You are making me hungry :)

That's my goal!

What's nice blog!

Thank you!

Wow..Nice post...food look so tasty and like to eat my dear friend @Miss. Delicious...Upvoted

Don't try eat it all at once though! Mini bites, like squirrel!

Sure...can't eat all at once...I will invite my all villagers to eat..

Shanghai is really good for this kinda luxury delight... but I really gotta learn to make stuff like this, so I don't have to keep looking on in envy...

Thankfully, most of the dishes are not hard to learn!

This is a quality post. The pictures have been touched professionally, the lighting is very good. love your posts.
checkout my trip.

Thank you patrick, lovely post you have there. I haven't been to stonehenge before, it looks like it has quite the story behind it!

ahhh... thx for checking it out. Stonehenge is a great place and no body know the story behind the stones and thats what is so fascinating. :)

Its fascinating how people at the time could move such heavy rocks so far..

Thats is what attracted me to the place and It was only after going there I realized how odd these rocks were compared to the surrounding area. Blows my mind when I think about who why and how they made this and more importantly why that place? :)
The more you dig, bigger the whole you create for yourself. ;)
You should do your next visit there. :)

Very interesting, nice and tasty, thank you

You're welcome! Time to seek out these dishes to eat for yourself!

Thank you @sweetsssj. I read your posts and I really like them

Extraordinary hard work, what is done very well, I am touched very much by sharing this very valuable information.

thanks gavvett; you're very kind!

Both you and @sweetsssj are also good

It looks like the kind of location you would not want to leave! The services seem to be very anchored by the demands of the times we live. It's amazing!😋

You are right, and that's precisely the reason I keep going back!

You make my cup noodles felt ashamed...

I eat cup noodles all the time(I just don't write about it)! They are my night time saviour!

Tasty Article and Beautiful Pictures

Terrific post, thank you!

Thanks @sweetssj, so where next you are taking us in your next upcoming post? i am much exited and waiting.

Cool...
U write a lot.
And both in chinese and eng.

Thank you, it does take a really long time! Sometimes I just go with English since that seems to be more universal here.

U make hungry @sweetsssj. It's place is not crowded and comfortable. Amazing china

Yeah I actually really like how it's not very busy there. Strange because it's very affordable. Maybe I might start seeing some of you there after this post though!

Looks delicious as usual ;-) Enjoy your stay there! Upvoted!

Thanks ! Another idea for Xi'an if you decide to visit!

It looks so good. I can't get enough of veggies!!

I do love my veggies, are you vegetarian by any chance?

No i'm not :P

Beautiful post - great fotos. I have been to Xian but 17 years ago. After all my travel - this would have been a great place to relax.

Wow, that's such a long time ago.. but thankfully, not much has changed in terms of the historic and cultural activities. You'll see a lot more modernisation though, but that is the case across all of China.

Indeed it was a long time ago - even toured the Yantze River before the Three Gorges Dam was there. Yes - I can imagine that it has modernised a lot now. I was in China for 2 months exploring the country even saw out of the way places like Pingyao. :) Hope that has not changed at all. By the way, I thought the landscape of China was surreal in some place and absolutely beautiful. The food - a gastronomic delight - was in food heaven!!!

you have eaten up all that food?
nooooo way :-)

but however that place looks really great.
i really enjoy places like that
unfortunately its a bit to far away to check it out by myself
so thx for doing it for me :-)

upvoted and following

Thanks chris, I did try each of these dishes, of course I found it hard to eat it all myself so my friends helped out!

Menu looks very delicious ! Pumpkin flavored steamed buns are so yummy! :)

I wondered if anyone would like that one, I absolutely love them. The only problem is they're very filling so really could only eat one !
