Urban Garden 2015: Highways, Occupied Land and Community

in #gardening3 years ago (edited)

For about 6 years we planted and gave-away vegetables from a vacant lot in our city (we have one of the highest rates of urban blight of any city in the USA). It wasn't meant to be political, just to do something good for the community. We knew that putting the land to use would also help this part of town with its high level of vacancy. It was also helpful to engage kids and families as well as raise consciousness about local home-grown food

Something remarkable happens when we grow things. This pictorial documents up close, the transformation of sections of the lot from grass and dirt to organized growing beds, walkways, seeds, saplings, plants and vegetables! And in one area we created a soaking plant garden. It was lovely and made a lot of us more hopeful and happy.

One of the gifts of growing things is just watching change over time.
Of course when we organize to plant food and grow it helps the community. But also a lot of thinking happens as we plan, prepare and plant. A lot of good energy is created as we observe the alchemy of life growing from seed to plant and from abandonment to husbandry.

As I think about a new year, I ponder the possibility of returning to urban gardening in 2021. But even as I think about that, I remember the garden mostly for the positive energy and high possibility that it brought to our corner of the city. Maybe it is time to make a new years resolution to go back growing again.

Thanks for engaging with my post @rasbas

We should all get back to growing things, working with our hands and making things for ourselves...But alas, society is on a different trip. Setting some goals for 2021, getting back to those things that make us feel energised and positive is a good thing I think...Good luck with it, I hope you get back to growing.

It would be nice if we could get back to more intentional growing. It was always remarkable to see the reaction of young kids to this project. They got down and dirty and very busy. We had so many visits from children who wanted to grow things and was fascinated with eating a tomato off the vine or planting something and watch it grow weekly. Then there were the neighbors who would stop by for green tomatoes as that isn't often sold in stores and its a big part of southern US food culture. Really remarkable. I do hope to get some growing down. My wife just bought a package of Thyme seeds. I've never grown that. So I am curious to see how it works out.

I hope it works out and you can get back to it.

I/m a fairly prepared dude but there's a few areas I lack in and growing is one of them. Ask me to hunt, trap, snare, navigate in the wilderness, defend myself, build a shelter, do some first aid, make a fire, make ammo and so on...Yeah, I go it...But grow some stuff? Hmm...It's that I can't do it, it's a lack of opportunity, room mostly. We're rectifying that though as my wife loves it in the garden. We're working on it.

Good luck with the thyme...Having fresh herbs in the garden is so nice...Nothing quite like fresh herbs in cooking.
