Geraniums are Cranesbills.

in #geraniums6 years ago

Geraniums are a very popular and somewhat old-fashioned plant, although there are many newer varieties available today. They grow naturally in Temperate regions of the World, and come in many varieties and colours. There are trailing Geraniums suitable for garden borders or hanging baskets, taller upright Geraniums, Geraniums with scented leaves which contain aromatic oils- they are a delight to smell when you rub or crush the leaves, some with a Rose scent, some with a Peppermint scent, some with a lemon scent, and many more. Other varieties have variegated leaves ( green and white on the same leaf ). There are single and double flowered varieties. They have relatively few pests and diseases, and will grow in most types of soil, as long as the roots don't get waterlogged. Grow them in full sun for best flowering. As for the sardinian flower, in summer it is not only on the balcony of every house, but also its own smell, the sun and thirst are not only resistant but also our eyes and soul, which gives us plenty of flowers, is at the beginning of the plants of peacefulness.

Sardins are outdoor plants. On yapay-rengarenk-sardunyalar.jpegrare occasions in the interior, the leaves of the airless areas are very quickly degraded. The ideal place for a plant of Sardinia will be in a sunny, non-extreme windy area, with as much soil as possible, and the sardinian will be able to reach it smoothly.Especially in the winter months when the air is down to minus, you must definitely cover your sardines with a nylon and get into the house. Otherwise your sardines will freeze and will not give you flowers in the summer.

True or hardy or perennial geraniums belong to the genus Geranium. You will sometimes see them referred to as cranesbill geraniums, because their seed pods do somewhat resemble a crane's bill, the Greek work for crane. They are low growing plants that spread by rhizomes. The foliage is often toothed and remains attractive. The flowers float on top of the plant, in shades of white, pink, magenta, purples and blues.

varieties in Geraniums.

Geranium endressii - Geranium endressii is probably what most gardeners envision first, when they think about hardy geraniums. It forms mounds of deeply-cut, glossy green foliage that is topped with cup-shaped flowers in various shades of pink or magenta. Geranium endressii is a quick spreader and makes a wonderful groundcover or mass planting.

Geranium sanguineum - Geranium sanguineum has the unfortunate nickname of Bloody Cranesbill because its foliage turns a bright crimson in the fall. It is actually an attractive plant all season, in or out of bloom. The foliage is usually more distinctly cut than other geraniums, giving it a delicate appearance. The typical cup-shaped flowers come in shades of pink, magenta and white. Geranium sanguineum has one of the best bloom displays of all the geraniums. The flowers can completely hide the foliage and repeat bloom can be expected. Geranium sanguineum spreads less quickly than Geranium endressii and really requires little to no care.

True Blue Geranium 'Johnson's Blue' - Geranium 'Johnson's Blue' was the first of the brilliant blue geraniums to catch gardeners' eyes. The Royal Horticultural Society gave it the Award of Garden Merit (AGM). The blue of its flowers is hard to photograph and is always more startling when you actually see the plant. The flower stalks can grow quite tall and will droop under the weight of the blossoms. Most gardeners don't bother to stake them, since it is still an attractive plant, even with its floppy habit.

Geranium 'Double Jewel' - Geranium 'Double Jewel' is a compact geranium with a more upright growing habit than you usually see in hardy geraniums. Growing a mere 10" in height, a single plant can easily fill an 8-10 inch pot and be perfectly happy growing there.

Geranium 'Southcombe Double' -Geranium 'Southcombe Double' has pure pink, fluffy double blossoms that don't look like geraniums, at first glance. But it's every bit has hardy and easy going as its geranium cousins and has the bonus of blooming almost non-stop throughout the summer, into fall.

Wow.. It is the plant my father likes very much. It was almost every color in our balcony. We could not bring our flowers when we moved because my mother do not like much flowers.
geranium 2 flower essence-554x554.jpg
Flowers of geranium that bloom in summer, balconies are indispensable. The fact that there are geraniums in every balky is not only a beautiful image but also the geranium is one of the most resistant flowers to the summer heat.
The geranium, like a cactus plant, store water in their main bodies. So they do not like too much water.
It is enough to irrigate twice a week for sun-glazed sunshine maintenance.
Geranium watering should be done either early in the morning or in the evening sun. Irrigation done at noon prevents the geranium from sucking the water with the effect of the sun and damages it.
Another thing to note when watering is water liming. Excess calcareous water can lead to fading of geranium.
Pink-Red-Hot-Geraniums-SS-238132756-560x400.jpg
Geranium is not a salon flower. For this reason they must be outdoors. Because when they stay inside they are prevented from getting air, which affects their lifespan.
The ideal area for geranium is the sun-exposed regions and windless regions.
BEAUTY-Red-Geranium-Windowbox-SS-331920140-560x400.jpg
Due to its durability, Geranium can maintain its health throughout the winter in protected areas where it is not exposed to intense snow and strong winds. However, the colds, which still fall below 5 degrees, will be annoying for the leaves.
It is suggested that the excreta of old plants in the form of bushes in the winter is cut in half or 1/3 in March. In addition, soil changes and fertilization are done within this month. The soil is slightly moistened and the geranium is carefully removed from the throat with the soil in the pot. Care is taken not to disperse the soil that holds the roots, mixed with the new fertilizer is placed in a pot from the other.
It is a feed cafid in 15 days with liquid flower fertilization.

Another smart flower post by @ctrl-alt-nwo sir...

Geranium is a genus of 422 species of flowering annual, biennial, and perennial plants that are commonly known as the cranesbills. They are found throughout the temperate regions of the world and the mountains of the tropics, but mostly in the eastern part of the Mediterranean region. The long, palmately cleft leaves are broadly circular in form. The flowers have five petals and are coloured white, pink, purple or blue, often with distinctive veining. Geraniums will grow in any soil as long as it is not waterlogged. Propagation is by semiripe cuttings in summer, by seed, or by division in autumn or spring.
images (3).jpeg

The English name ‘cranesbill’ derives from the appearance of the fruit capsule of some of the species. Species in the Geranium genus have a distinctive mechanism for seed dispersal. This consists of a beak-like column which springs open when ripe and casts the seeds some distance. The fruit capsule consists of five cells, each containing one seed, joined to a column produced from the centre of the old flower. The common name ‘cranesbill’ comes from the shape of the unsprung column, which in some species is long and looks like the bill of a crane. However, many species in this genus do not have a long beak-like column.

Geraniums are eaten by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including brown-tail, ghost moth, and mouse moth. At least several species of Geranium are gynodioecious.

The species Geranium viscosissimum (sticky geranium) is considered to be protocarnivorous.

Geraniums are a longtime favorite of Almanac gardeners. They are easy to grow, colorful, and emit a lovely scent. The plants that we commonly call geraniums were introduced in Europe by Dutch traders who brought them from South Africa in the early 18th century. Because these new plants resembled the hardy wild geraniums already growing in Europe, botanists mistakenly grouped them together. In 1753, Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus classified them under the genus Geranium. When it was later discovered that these new “geraniums” differed from European geraniums in the shape of their petals, the number of stamens, and other factors, they were renamed Pelargonium, meaning stork’s bill a reference to the long, sharply pointed shape of their seedpod. But to this day, we still say “geranium” when we actually mean “pelargonium.”
For minor cuts, apply crushed geranium leaves to stop the bleeding. In the language of flowers, scarlet geranium means silliness.Common problems can be low light or too much or too little water. The leaves will turn yellow as an indication you are watering too little or too much. In this case, try to even the watering out and move the geraniums to a brighter place.

Good info and nice pics.

Geraniums (Pelargonium x hortorum) make popular bedding plants in the garden, but they’re also commonly grown indoors or outside in hanging baskets. Growing geranium plants is easy as long as you can give them what they need.geranium_plant.jpg How to Grow Geraniums Depending on where or how you grow geranium plants, their needs will be somewhat different. Indoors, geraniums need lots of light for blooming but will tolerate moderate light conditions.geranium-flower.jpgThey also need indoor temps of around 65-70 degrees F. (18-21 C.) during the day and 55 degrees F. (13 C.) at night. These plants need to be grown in well-draining potting soil as well. When growing geraniums outdoors, they require moist, well-draining soil similar to that of indoor potting soil with equal amounts of soil, peat and perlite. Locate your geraniums in an area with at least six to eight hours of sunlight. Since these plants must be protected from cold, wait until the threat of frost has passed before planting. Space plants about 8 to 12 inches apart and around the same depth as their original planting pots.geraniums1-400x300.jpgMulching the plants is also recommended to help retain moisture.

Another wonderful and interesting flowers post by @ctrl-alt-nwo
Hardy geraniums – sometimes referred to as cranesbills – are among the most popular garden perennials. And it’s easy to see why. They’re easy to grow, take a wide range of conditions, are tough and need little in the way of care and attention.

The flower colour ranges through strong or subtle shades of violets, blues, pinks, magenta and white, and many have attractive veining in a contrasting stronger colour. Many varieties flower for months on end throughout summer and well into autumn, and some start flowering as early as late spring. The flowers are generally quite small, but produced in huge abundance to almost cover the plants when in full bloom.

The hand-like foliage of many varieties is also highly attractive in its own right, producing various quilting, veining, and colour blotching. And, as many of the commonly grown varieties are low growing, their dense carpet-like foliage makes them good ground cover plants.

They are cold and frost hardy, so shouldn’t be confused with the very closely related pelargoniums, which aren’t and are used mainly as summer bedding plants.

HOW TO GROW HARDY GERANIUMS
CULTIVATION
There are varieties that will grow in full sun, partial shade and even quite dense shade. As a general rule, they tend to do best in early morning and afternoon sun, although some, such as Geranium sanguineum and Geranium pratense and their varieties thrive in full sun, providing there is adequate moisture in the soil.

Geraniums need a well-drained, fertile, and moist soil.

@ctrl-alt-nwo, You're every time going to various way. Every time you introduce some unknown plants modules to steemit. Appreciated task you done here. On the whole, geraniums are full-sun plants. They crave sunshine and do well in locations where they receive at least six hours of sun. In warmest areas of the country, provide light shade during the hottest part of the day. Martha Washington and ivy geraniums need light shade in all regions as summer temperatures soar. Geraniums are easily overrun with fungal and leaf spot diseases, especially during periods of prolonged wet weather. Protect plants from disease outbreaks by ensuring geraniums have adequate air flow. Choose your location carefully, though. Too little air movement can lead to diseases, but too much wind can break stems. Geranium care includes watering and fertilizing. Water geraniums early in the day, if possible, to avoid standing water on leaves overnight, which often leads to disease. Root zone watering with drip irrigation or soaker hoses eliminates the danger of splashing water on leaves or flowers.

Wow, a very beautiful plant @ctrl-alt-nwo, but I've never seen that plant before. It may not be in my nagara, or maybe it's there, but I've never seen it before. You say this plant has several colors and varieties. It must be really cool, every color must have its own beauty. I really like the plants or flowers, because it is not only beautiful but also has many benefits for us.

I also have some flowers planted in my house, and I am very happy to take care of him. Because with us merwatnya well, surely he will grow well and look more beautiful. It's one of the flowers I love about some of the flowers I have. I think this flower seems to grow in any climatic climate, but I do not know for sure. In my country has a hot climate, but this flower can grow well. Thanks for sharing and hope you have a wonderful day ... :)

That would be aweosme gardening post and some information enterd. I added these contents. Geraniums are one of the most classic and easily recognizable flowering plants in American gardens. But, how difficult are they to grow and maintain? It actually may not be as hard as you imagined. Geraniums are a fairly simple to start plant and require little maintenance, which could be part of the reason they are so popular. An extremely versatile flowering plant, geraniums can be grown as annuals, perennials or indoor plants. They are, perhaps, most frequently grown outdoors in planters. You’ll often see them lining the steps to a front entry or in groupings on a light-filled stoop.

annuals-biennials-and-perennials.jpg

Will want to allow the soil to dry out between waterings to help avoid root rot; however, do not allow the leaves on your plant to wilt. When the plant begins to wilt, you may try to revive it by overcompensating with extra water. This can lead to leaf drop, which doesn’t make for an attractive display of geraniums. Remember, for the best results, be consistent.Throughout the growing season, be sure deadhead the flowers, removing dead blooms and dried leaves. Also, note that over-fertilizing will result in poor blooms. If you are using a water-mixed fertilizer, once per month should be plenty to properly feed your plants without overwhelming them. Remember, geraniums are relatively low maintenance, so there’s no need to be overprotective of the beauties.

The most interesting health benefits of geranium include its ability to lower stress levels, reduce inflammation, relieve menstrual pain, strengthen the immune system, ease digestion and improve kidney, skin and hair health. It has antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties which help heal wounds faster.

Geranium Health Benefits
Let’s take a closer look at some of the important health benefits of geranium:

Lowers Stress
The impact of geranium on the nervous system is well known and the plant has been used in this way for generations. If you brew the leaves of its plant, you can produce a tasty tea that has soothing properties, derived from its organic compounds that positively impact the endocrine system and help to balance hormones that cause stress and anxiety. A quick cup of tea when you’re stressed can quickly relieve unpleasant moods and a cluttered mind.

Reduces Inflammation
One of the other common uses of geranium is to relieve inflammation throughout the body. If you suffer from sore joints, aching muscles, or even internal inflammation of the gut or cardiovascular system, an easily prepared geranium tea can quickly relieve this discomfort and reduce the strain on your body’s sensitive areas.

Relieves Pain
Although quite similar to its anti-inflammatory properties, the analgesic ability of geranium has made it a popular traditional remedy for headaches and other injuries. If you suffer from chronic pain or migraines, research has shown that its tea can release endorphins and relieve pain quite rapidly. This effect is relatively mild, and shouldn’t be relied on for permanent pain relief.

Boosts Immunity
It helps strengthen the body’s defense system against diseases and infections. Its antimicrobial properties can help prevent internal and external pathogens from negatively impacting the body.

Good info. thanks.

image Geraniums is very beautiful plant.
Geraniums like fertile, well-drained soil that contains plenty of organic matter. Let the soil go slightly dry between waterings. Don’t overfertilize: Feed them with slow-release, granular fertilizer once in spring or with a liquid 20-20-20 fertilizer three times during the growing season. Remove faded flowers regularly to keep the plants blooming. The best exposure is full sun in the morning with light afternoon shade. image

Good To Know
High summer heat can take its toll on these plants. Many common geraniums stop blooming in sizzling weather, a condition known as “heat check.” (They’ll resume blooming when cooler weather arrives.) To avoid this, grow heat-tolerant types, such as the Americana, Eclipse, Fidelity, Maverick, and Orbit Series. Ivy geraniums like high heat even less; they do better in the Upper and Middle South. However, the heat-tolerant Blizzard, Cascade, and Summer Showers Series perform well in much of the Lower South. So does ‘Sofie Cascade.’ In the Coastal and Tropical South, use ivy geraniums as winter annuals image @source

This is so true that geraniums are somwhow old fashioned plants with a memorable history. These are still common in our native region accross the border line with neighbouring country. In my childhood i heard a story about geraniums own dragons and snake idk whether it is true or wrong but one thing is for sure they attract human's eye ;-)

Thank you so much for taking some awesome shots <3

Stay blessed Sydney :-)

One of my favorite colors. I have two kinds of "royal geraniums" and usual. We are considered that this plant drives away evil spirits from home :) Thanks for the interesting post.

This plant have a lot od healthy benifits its good for physical mental and emotional health
Geraniums oil is good for reduce inflammation
thanks for sharing this plant i also use its oil because its good for me and have great benifits

Since you have used it, you must be knowing about its plants too. I have two plants in one pot, and only one seems to produce flowers. The other one never has bloomed. I would like to transplant them this spring as they are outgrowing the pot. Should I keep them together, or can I safely separate them? I'm worried that the non-flowering plant will never produce a bloom. My question is "Are there male and female geranium plants? Does one need the other to bloom?"

Hey buddy, the answer is no, there are not male and female plants. In a lot of plants that are grown from seed, there are cases where a plant will not flower, and this can be due to genetic variation. It is a bit like humans...two parents give birth to a son, who has totally differnt characteristics from the parents, and it confuses them, this is a bit like growing from seed, except it was sperm instead. Persist with the non-flowering plant for a while, and if still no joy, then try another plant instead that you know will flower, such as one you buy that is flowering already.

There are some beautiful flowers but not always flavorful and fragrant geranium flower is very beautiful and has a scent that gives the mind calm and comfortable. but unfortunately his flower geranium is not growing in my country.
thanks for best post and beauty flower
