How Intermittent Fasting and Diet Change Cured My Depression

in #health7 years ago

A lot of people have been asking me what it was that made all these changes in me in the last few months.

It was a lot of things and a progression of about 2 years of work on trying to heal myself.

Psychedelics played a role, especially in the early days. Some forms of counseling helped. Exercise helped. Meditation helped.

But, nothing seemed to have as large of an effect as fasting and diet.

All of the major changes all happened right on my very first juice fast. On my first juice fast I quit smoking... and I wasn't even trying to quit smoking... it just happened.

A few more juice fasts later and I became a raw vegan/fruitarian. Again, it wasn't even something I wanted to do. My body all of a sudden just told me that is what it wanted.

And a few master cleanse fasts later and I quit drinking.

And from the moment of my first fast my depression went away. And once I transitioned to a raw vegan/fruitarian diet along with daily intermittent fasting where I would not eat between 9pm-3pm my depression was a thing of the past.

My diet can most easily be explained by reading this book, "Prof. Arnold Ehret's Mucusless Diet Healing System."

In the book, written a century ago, he explains how he cured virtually every disease known to man via this fasting and diet system.

And, surprise surprise, as his method was becoming popular he was found dead in strange circumstances... almost certainly killed by some faction of the US government wanting to protect the pharma and food industries which would be destroyed completely if everyone knew this information.

Here's more information on how this diet and lifestyle change seemed to have cured me of depression and much more:

As a sidenote, I watched the documentary, What The Health, the other day and it does a good job of explaining just how a vegan diet can heal people... and it is even more healing when you combine it with a large amount of fruit intake, raw vegan and fasting.

You can see What The Health on Netflix or currently here on Youtube:

Since doing this diet I've heard from hundreds of people (yes hundreds!) who have tried it and every single person has said it has cured them of their ailments or they are feeling better than they have ever felt in their life.

I suggest you give it a try!

I have experimented with a lot of different fasting approaches and I really enjoy intermittent fasting. During the day only pure water, cold pressed juices and Orin then have one meal whenever fits your schedule, I usually eat in the evening, preferably raw. If anyone have any questions regarding fasting feel free to ask, gonna make some videos about it going forward! :)

Awesome. What about the fiber that you're missing out when juicing. I usually go for smoothies because of that, but I'm curious what your take is on it. My fiance and I have been intermittent fasting for a few months and really seeing great results and feeling awesome. I think a good tip I realized was to ease into it, starting 1 day a week, then building up from there so it's easier to sustain. Looking forward to learning more about your experience!

It depends on the status of your internal system and unfortunately most people are a big mess inside. If you got a lot crap clogging up your system the importance of good fibers goes up. If your clean though fibers are not as vital.

I wanna shine a light on the four sources of pure water ( all machine-made distilled waters [distillers, evaporators, condensers, solar distillers, air wells, fog fences and dew ponds], all sky distilled waters [rain, mist, snow, dew and fog], all body distilled waters [saliva, plasma, amniotic fluid, urine and breast milk] and all plant distilled waters [raw fruit and vegetable juices] )

Will make a post with more in depth information about water and show you what kind of equipment we use here in our little communal house in Gothenburg , Sweden! :)

Awesome to hear! Looking forward to your future posts on water. I'm fascinated by water and feel there is so much to learn about it. As an avid gardener I also am excited to do experiments on different types of water and how it affects plant growth. Great to connect, @reko!

Cool! I'm mostly focused on foraging at the moment. Lots of nettles, dandelion, ground elder, wild grass etc. Use it mostly in cold pressed juices with apple, carrot, lemon, ginger... after one of those it's definitely FULL STEEM AHEAD!! ;)

Awesome! Do you harvest the nettles only when young or when they are full grown as well? I have lots of them around here. Do you harvest with gloves or have a good technique to avoid getting stung? Thanks for the advice and here's to natures abundance!

I harvest them all season long, my Green Star Elite juicer which is especially good at wild greens which saves me a lot of energy chewing and digesting.

Nettles can really hurt though as most knows, the trick is to not touch the upside of the leaves and avoid stroking motions. I usually do without gloves and just be steady and precise. If I get tagged I just take a leaf on the downside and roll it into a ball. Then just rub the place where it hurts and it works as an effective antidote.

Have you heard of that black vegan bodybuilder who does 24hr fasts ? He just eats one meal at noon the size of three meals everyday. Think he is in his 70's but looks like he is in his early 40's

Yeah, I definitely found some of his ideas to be inspiring. He definitely looks so young. Pretty amazing. Have you seen this:

Thank you. This video was amazing.

I know right! Pretty wild stuff. That video first got me into IF.

The Story of a 78-Year-Old Vegan Bodybuilder - Jim Morris: Lifelong Fitness - Short Film

Wow. It is unbelievable. He doesn't look 78. I think, a person who is a vegan doesn't have complete minerals and vitamins his body needs.

I have heard of that one! A friend of mine tried to do that, and he actually really liked the way of eating!

What The Health is a documentary I purchased on Vimeo because of its excellent research and insightful (secret) recordings. "We cannot do the interview based on the influence of nutrition on health. The hospital makes money off the patients." Took a long time to get that on camera, but Kip Andersen managed to uncover a lot going on in the world of pharmaceuticals and hospitals.

Good on 'ya Jeff!
Yep, I've been intermittent fasting for over a decade before coming to realize (just recently) that it was the "right" thing to do; powerful Dr. Rhonda Patrick!
Jeff, you may want to explore biphasic sleep; I've been experimenting with that since 1998...
No clinical data out there that I've found, solely anecdotal evidence, and this practice has served me well.
Have a wonderful week brother! 😊

Thanks for sheering

I like that you got more personal recently, and have focused on looking at growth and health more. A lot of humans, I think, are missing genuine, raw interaction in their lives, and they love to see people being real and open about life and the learning process. If ya never pretend you've got it all figured out, most won't expect you that you do. :)

Keep it up, Jeff, your posts brighten my days!

I returned to Steemit today, btw. Go see my post....if ya want. You know I cant tell you what to do! ;)

I've heard our gut is linked to our brain and serotonin is produced there too. So cleaning out the gut will improve the head.

yup research gut brain barrier/axis

Hi Jeff, What a beautiful post - it's so important for people to know that all emotions have their 'nutriments' and if you cut off the source of that 'nutriment' then the emotion will cease to manifest (Thich Nhat Hanh). I'd be fascinated to hear what you think about the massive EOS ICO that is going on right now - it seems like a game changer? My post from this morning:

https://steemit.com/cryptocurrency/@willstephens/why-eos-can-rival-ethereum-total-ico-funds-of-over-usd3bn-est-curentmarket-cap-of-usd4-5bn-overtakes-litecoin-market-cap

Have a beautiful day!

Will

Totally agree with you @jeffberwick. I've been doing intermittent fasting for about 6 years and it changed my life. I don't really think about it anymore, it just became who I am :)

It's all about balance!

Enjoy!

Intermittent fasting is amazing! My mornings are so much more energetic than if I were to eat a large breakfast like people suggested in the 20th century. Shit's wrong! The science is in!

Yes. I have also noticed that I feel more alive when not eating! I think that our body is in "alert mode" when is a little hungry because that's how we would get our food and survive in a natural habitat.

I went Vegan for a month and a half this year, I cannot tell you how much that changed not only my body health but mental health over that month and a half. I suggest everyone try it, I did the fasting thing also. I would stop eating at 9pm at night and wait till 1pm or 2pm the next day. Just a word of warning, there is a detox period up to 7 days, then after the first week you feel like a new person.

You gotta stick with it! A month and a half and now are you back to eating the way you did? If it helped you so much, what made you go back? I couldn't imagine going back now.

Yeah the first couple of weeks are the hardest, but you literally have a new lease on life when going vegan. I think the mental and ethical aspects have been the greatest impact for me. I feel so much more aligned with my values now.

I like meat and cheese too much. Its not a lifestyle change I can live the rest of my life with. But it did make me look at food in a different way and make better choices now.

How did it make you look at your food differently if you went back to your old habits?

Intake mostly. Some things like Milk didn't seem appetizing any more. Fast food I rarely get anymore either.

Sure. I suggest more looking and thinking at the food! Cheers and good health to all

Sounds interesting. I like the idea of a 'mucusless diet'; I hate it when they put that stuff in my food...

You mentioned the lies we're told about our urine. :) Have you tried Urine Therapy yet Jeff? ;)

Diet is such a huge deal. I'm happy your cleaning up your life, both mentally and physically. Plus your diet is easier on the environment. It's a win-win...

KEEP IN MIND! REALLY IMPORTANT I ALMOST HAD A HART ATTACK! What Prof. Arnold is writhing in his book is all about TRANSITION, if you rush into fruitarian diet, basically your body starts to cleans from posions and they are all going trough the bloodstream.
Let me share with you my experience regarding this. When i first found out about this I felt that it was true (I have like an inner compass for truth, hard to explain), and what I have learned about mucus and where its located in you body and what sorts of problems it can cause I felt like I was eating wrong my whole life garbage, and wanted to cleans my body and eat whats right. And I jumped right in, eating only raw, cooking only soups... I was feeling fantastic, my mental perception was so clear, I could see right trough the bullshit of this society (that can happen also). But one day I was reading something for my research and all of the sudden I felt anxious, my heart started pounding really strong a couple of times, and I was starting to sweat. I' was scared so much I called my mom to come pick me up and get me to the ambulance. When she came I was still feeling anxious, and then something sliced me in my stomach. I went to the bathroom, took a shit, went out, another slice, went again, and like that 2 times more. My body was cleansing it self and I swear to God my shit was BLACK. Later during the week I picked up the book from where I have left, and after reading two more paragraphs I laughed hard.
This is what I've read:

The first lesson has now given you an insight as to
what disease actually is. In addition to mucus and its
toxemias in the system, there are other foreign matters
such as uric acid, toxins, etc., and especially drugs if ever
used. I learned thru the years of practical experience that
drugs are NEVER eliminated as is the waste from foods
but are stored up in the body for decades. Hundreds of
cases have come under my observation where drugs taken
10, 20, 30 and even 40 years were expelled together with
mucus thru this perfect healing system. This is a fact of
basic importanceespecially for the Practitioner. When
these chemical poisons after being dissolved are taken back
into the circulation for elimination thru the kidneysthe
nerves and heart are affectedcausing extreme nervousness,
dizziness and excessive heart-beats, as well as other
strange sensations. The uninformed stands before a mystery
and probably calls the family doctor, who now diagnoses
the condition as "heart-disease" and blames the
"lack of food" instead of the drugs he prescribed 10 years
ago.

And on that note I strongly advise you to take care, read a lot and then follow the teaching of Prof. Ehret in detail. This is not a diet this is a HEALING SYSTEM.
Cheers :)

I´ll give it a try...

You're so right, Jeff. So many of us have really been sick the better part of our lives due to our diets. Fasting (and intermittent fasting) is a natural way of healing our bodies and is actually THE best way to rid our body of the years of malnutrition we've been going through. Very nice post!

I find this very inspirational. I need a body reboot and this may be exactly what I should do. Will definitely research.

I employ intermittent fasting everyday. I have been doing it for years. This is without changing what I eat or the amount. I maintain my weight like this. If I want to lose weight, I just eat less heavy carbs and more juice/fruit/vegetables.

I'm glad to see you off the statest drugs! get well man
Cheers

Beautiful pictures.Greetings.I wish you a beautiful day

Great Article , followed!

I myself have been Intermittent fasting along with the
Ketogenic Diet @ketogoals and have noticed a change in my health for the better. Not only did I lose weight, cure depression and fatigue but I did not lose muscle mass and also healed my thyroid. Honestly it just makes sense to let your body rest and only eat when hungry. Our bodies have the potential to heal themselves and along with a healthy Diet like Keto which is a No sugar Low carb diet that consists of mainly good fats.
Have any of you tried Keto?

Wish you the best on your keto journey!!

Thank you for this informative post and video. Nice dogs and walk. Thanks for the change.
Raw Cacao is an amazing nutritional healing for depression and so much more. Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory and adaptogen.

I'm still on the beer diet. But slowly getting near 40 years old I'll try to eat better. I'm lucky, i'm ain't so fat, but not in beach shape either. Congrats to you for this turnaround!

I must say your videos were more entertaining when your eyes were glazed and the cigarette not too far. But respect on quitting it all. This fasting thing seems like it could offer me some good things

I've always wanted to do some fasting but never had that much motivation. But you really inspired me to actually do it. And I'm serious, I'll do it for sure now ! Once you mention that you quit smoking this way, I knew I can't overlook this. I've been wanting to quit smoking for quite a while now, but it's really hard to do. Thanks a lot for this huge motivation and possibly for the change of my life to the better side :)

I’m struggling! I can not get away from crap food. I do feel the differences when i eat good but at the end of the night I feel like I need a steak and potatoes. I feel like im starving all day. I am hangry all day. I hope to escape this feeling. My GF is a vegetarian so finding food that is good is not hard. I just eat for 3 or 4 and in a couple hours I could do it again. I am very active and maybe 20 pounds from a six pack but I cant get away from the bad stuff. Your videos are a huge inspiration and I hope I can get to my first set of goals. Love the videos across the board.

This is an awesome recovery remedy to me.. Looks a bit organic as well as requiring a bit of dedication and honesty to one's self.... Will definitely give it a try.... Good work @jeffberwick

Hey Jeff right on again. So many of your recent posts seemed to be talking about things I am discovering too. I am vegan and have done some periods of raw vegan and the energy and calmness was definitely enhanced for me. I have found it difficult to stay completely on the raw food and off sugar and caffeine. I will keep working towards more raw and less sugar and caffeine and of course stay vegan. I also do the intermittent fasting and believe that it is very good for us in many ways. I usually don't eat until noon but I may try stretching it out to 3 p.m. and see how that is for me. Thanks for the the great posts!

ill go to try this one fine day :)
THanx for the video and nice post Resteemed

Wow! The gut has the most nerve endings (apart from the brain) good gut health I think equals good brain health! I love that all this stuff is emerging, hopefully more people will catch on!

Congrats for being cured....many people like me find your blog very inspiring..upvoted and followed

Thank you!

Eating less and keeping your body deprived of food is how are bodies function the most optimal. I use to always think the opposite until I tried Intermittent Fasting. I feel amazing when I'm fasted!

Exactly! Makes perfect sence, change diet and changes everything: mood, sleep, energy levels. Its not as much about aesthetics as quality of life.

I get depressed and when i am my motivation falls so i would find it hard to fast. It's a presumption but i do agree that fasting is good, for one it will speed up the metabolism and in turn cleanse the liver. Thanks Jeff. Upvoted and followed

all about that intermit fasting!

I'm in the same boat my friend. Love the write up and agree 100 percent. Thanks for all you do. Cheers!

I need to start listening to you better Jeff. I feel like death all the time. lol

I think the key is that you should really try to listen to your body, it knows what you need, and will tell you. But we bullshit ourselves all the time, rationalizing everything with that stupid ego of ours.

Thank for the information. Medicine is in the food we eat. Father of modern medicine once said" let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food"

I've been doing intermittent fasting for about 8 months now and it has had an incredible impact on my life. Lowering the sugar and carbs have also helped tremendously. I've never felt better.

SPREAD THE WORD JEFF! BRAVO!

Yea @jeffberwick , our body spends so much time and energy processing the crap we stuff into it every single day. Especially with today's food industries who just care about massive profit's.

Great! I'm glad for you. I am all for periodic fasting. It not only cleanses the body from toxins but it renews the mind and spirit. This is important for overall good health.

I have been watching to many of Jeff's videos. When I walk my dog, I started giving spanish commands. And I don't speak spanish.

It is hard to believe this is the same Jeff Berwick that played cards all night at Aria, drinking heavily, then even tried to grab a piece of pizza from a random who was walking the other way, explaining to me you can do whatever you want if you had the power or something along those lines. While I was intrigued, it all seemed a bit unusual. I do tend to wonder what would have happened if I followed you into that club... At any rate, it is nice to see you quit the drinking & finding a groove. I'll have to make it out to Anarchapaulco one day.
