Dissociative Identity Disorder

in #health7 years ago

Dissociative identity disorder, previously called multiple personality disorder, is usually a reaction to trauma as a way to help a person avoid bad memories. Dissociative identity disorder is characterized by the presence of two or more distinct personality identities. Each may have a unique name, personal history, and characteristics.

It is a very rare disease, where the rate of infection in the world is less than 1% according to recent studies, and is known as a severe disorder that affects the mental state of a human being, it manifests through the behavior and thought patterns of the person. The disease causes social and behavioural problems.

Some famous people suffering or suffered from Dissociative Identity Disorder are; Herschel Walker, Adam Duritz, Roseanne Barr, Shirley Mason, Marilyn Monroe. Many however, never share or shared their affliction with such a disease.

Causes:

Causes of Dissociative Identity Disorder may be due to genetic, psychological or environmental reasons that occur with a person such as: infection of the pregnant mother during pregnancy, or severe poverty, violence and beatings, loss of one or both parents during childhood.
It may also be caused by a disturbance in the chemical structures found in the human brain. (Chemical Imbalance)

Symptoms:

  • hallucinations
  • Mental Disorders
  • Illusions
  • Intense fear
  • Prolonged Silence
  • isolation
  • Increased sexual behavior
  • Substance abuse
  • Mood swings
  • quick and sudden personality changes

These are not all the signs and symptoms but the most obvious. Although a person with Schizophrenia may share some of these symptoms, the two diseases should not be confused and are not the same.

Treatment

Dissociative Identity Disorder is not easy to treat and diagnose, there are always debates as to how it is diagnosed, as some suggest the disease is not real and claim it is therapist-induced. Such claims made it hard to be recognized by health care providers, and harder for patients to get proper care. Another problem for diagnosing such a disease is the fact that most patients suffer a feeling of guilt and shame that causes them to hide or forget causes for this disease, like violent or sexual abuse which they might have suffered as children.

Treatment may range from talk therapy, to a number of drugs that influence the chemical balance of the brain. Our brains are capable of self healing by producing certain chemicals, but when the brain ability to do so is impeded, a doctor can prescribe a drug that will repair the imbalance and put the brain back on the route to self healing.

There is no magic cure for Dissociative Identity Disorder , it will not go away on it's own. A system of support from family and friends to an expert diagnosis and treatment is needed. Left alone such diseases can lead a human being to feeling helpless, depressed, and capable of self harm or harm to others. Suicide and substance abuse are known side effects if the disease is left unchecked

Fascinating post - thanks . Must be terrifying to have this condition

DID is real! I am a substitute PCA and work one on one with children with issues. I am presently working with a 5 year old boy. I've worked with him for over 3 months. He's been run over by his mother and who knows what other trauma he's been through. At first the boy didn't speak at all. When he finally did start talking I noticed he used different voices at different times. One voice is high pitched and he says he's Mrs. Sparkle. He uses this voice during some class activities. One voice is deep he calls it The Monster and uses it when he is very mad. He has an African accent with one of his voices. I didn't ask him what that ones name was. I call it his African voice and he also has his regular kid voice. He also howls and buzzes at times, Among Other Things. I was just checking these videos to see what is up with this kid because he is so odd. He has no diagnosis yet but I was reading about DID and it totally fits him. He's normally very serious, and I hadn't put together that they were actually different personalities. I thought he was just strange and using strange voices for some reason. But it totally makes sense because these voices do take on different characteristics. This kid is not trying to fake anything. I look at him one minute he's fine and a second latter someone taps him to say hi and his eyes are filled with tears and his face is just in utter terror. He is really disturbed and I hope there is something someone can do about it because he is so young maybe he has a chance to reverse this. I wouldn't believe in DID either from shows I've watched but this kid is for real.

I agree with you @joseph, there is no ideal medicine for treatment, all factors of influence from them are important here, self-adjustment and support of relatives take the leading role.

Throughout my alchemical study kundalini process I've found myself so many times in a state revered as No Self, it leaves you without a self feel so the ego can be clearly seen and dissolved, some hallucinations do tend to appear at extreme circumstances

Can curiosity may end shameless explained.

This is so accurate. U have no idea

awesome

This may sound like a dumb question, but is it possible for the person suffering from DID to interact with his or her other personality ala Fight Club? Via hallucinations perhaps?

And I am not just talking about talking to each other. What if the other personality kind of like lifts that other person off the ground?

It does not sound like a dumb question at all.

For what I know. Is that if they are in an "alter" they are closed of from the others, but their "original" knows about the alters. But I could be wrong.

Fight Club certainly dramatize it though haha.

Hi @joseph, This is a detailed article on this topic. After reading your post, I did some research on it and found this disorder is terrifying. For example, check these facts:

Great and interesting post, we see many persons with this dissorder in Venezuela right now!!!

Interesting read @joseph. my mom has developed this kind of disorder after my dad's passing. whenever she got angry for something that we say as a sign of disrespect or something that will really upset set she goes into a stage of crying heavily and after that she will say she's not my mom. she's into a different personality and doesn't know us all. weird as it may seem, we all just have to soothe her down either by calling her siblings or by anyone in the family. after the episode she doesn't remember anything. my mom is just 60, dad died when he was only 37, poverty had something to do with it.
now my mom lives with me and she's living a normal life, all good and no sign of stress. hopefully she won't encounter any more of this episode.

If we are constantly slipping out of the "NOW" moment. Who are we when we are not here?

It's real, and I'm not sure it's treatable at all.

I think the best thing someone can do is: find ways to make it work for you instead of working against you. Ex: You can appoint different identities to different tasks.

Ultimately - the agenda would be to accept each as the whole of who you are - much like a business, with each identity being an employee who have different jobs within the company. Eventually, and with lots of practice and patience, it can operate like a well-oiled machine and be seen as a major asset that constantly out-competes the competition.

No1 - Get that kid on a vegan diet! Get him out in nature interacting with animals. Introduce him to terminally ill children in a 'happy ward' somewhere. Start teaching him music and a martial art. Channel his different characters with improvisation. Wed all of this with small amounts of gentle psychotherapy. All this takes a lot of time and resources, but it's the only way I would go if it were my child

@joseph, you have done a good job of compiling information on this disorder.

Goodmorning dear Joseph!
Thanks for a condensed and understandable explanation of the disorder. I am surprised - 1% is a really big amount. I recently found out about Compulsive Skin Picking and other Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors, which, i hadnt even realized, is a medical disorder as well. If you have some knowledge on it, i would gladly read it! :)

I'm glad to see you who are so strongly stuck in the field of steemit, good post-posting your post ,, I really like it ,, you can everything in any field @joseph please Upvote & follow @danker

You have my agreement @joseph.
The hindus believe that people can be reborn because earlier in history, they saw someone with this disease. As you can reborn, you might have your earlier life memory. That's what they believe.
Now it has become a part of their culture and religion.

@joseph very informative post sir thanks have a good day ahead thankyou i am following you please give me some tips new here in steemit

Sounds not nice, must be a really bad infection,, tanks for the tip tho,, learnt one today

This happened to my friend's uncle. He got into a car accident, it was real bad. I know this is a bit different from the article but he also got some sort of split personality after the accident he wasn't the same anymore. Its a bad thing to happen to someone, its even worse working through that trauma.

None the less good article.

The other day I saw a documentary about diseases and how they all start in our head first as a result of a deficiency that our body starts to suffer from and how the hole process can be amplified when we actually find out about it by the placebo effect. And I couldn't agree more, it's true that these days, because of our beliefs and the true, but rarely recognized cruel society. It true that some diseases as dissociative identity disorder can just get cured on it's own and they need a special medicine. Interesting little post, I must admit! Thanks for sharing this with us!

Thank you!

Good evening, thank you for sharing, the reality of all this is that more and more people are born that way, or even can reproduce the disease over the years, are very difficult to deal with and difficult problems of living together ... affect the same person and his environment a lot ... it's a shame ... but every time science is more advanced and we can trust more and more that soon we will all live a normal and quiet life. We continue reading. Greetings.
