Dr.Parhofer had previously observed that consuming 43 g of walnut per day for 8 weeks significantly affected lipids in healthy subjects. In the same study in which intestinal microbiology was also evaluated, 134 women were healthy and 194 European subjects were included. The results show that walnut intake of 43 g / day for 8 weeks significantly increases the intestinal microbiology by increasing probiotics and butyric acid producing species in healthy individuals.

Walnut provides support for the development of useful probiotic bacteria in the intestines due to both the valuable fatty acids found in the structure and the fiber in the thin husk. Antioxidant polyphenol compounds found in walnut also contribute to intestinal health by showing prebiotic effect.
