How to make the Imperfect Apple Pie

Apple Pie

coffee and pie.jpg
I have been wanting to make "Apple Pie" for awhile now, so decided to make it today.
Well, that was my intention, just nothing, absolutely nothing went according to what I had planned. Everything just seemed to go in the opposite direction; it felt like the forces of the universe had a hand brake on everything I did.
First of all, I couldn't find my favorite pie dish, then remembered my daughter Angela had borrowed it and never returned it.
Anyway, I would just have to use my square cake tin which was stacked away high up in the cupboard, I could see it, but couldn't reach it.
My eye caught the feather duster, I could maneuver it out with the long handle, I presumptuously thought.
Oh boy! that was the wrong move, everything came crashing down on my head, then hitting the floor in rhythmic symbols of a drum set.
"What the hell are you doing?", Peter yelled, rushing from the dinning room.
Well!...I wont elaborate on our very explicit and creative language skills that was conversed between us, I will leave that to your own imagination.
Then my little friend the monkey, entered my kitchen and politely stole two of my apples, leaving me with 6 and not 8. We have a lot of these little fellows around and they know where to come for a easy meal.

The little rascal up in the tree

However, after all that, the neurons in my brain still hip-hopping to the earsplitting echo of a pot landing on my head; I gathered the ingredients together and started preparing the pastry for the pie, I had no intention in entering this post in Qurators: Hive Chef!| Favorite Traditional Food competition, if my dear friend @lizelle didn't bend my arm too.
I just didn't think it was worthy of competition material, then again, what the heck lets just have fun.
So, without any further ado, here it is. "Apple Pie gone wrong"

I used the puff pastry recipe from my "Karoo Kitchen" Cook book.

Soft Dough

Roll out to a rectangle measuring 15cm x25cm. Dot the top two thirds of the rectangle with one third of the butter cubes. Fold then seal the edges with fingertips. Turn the dough 90 degrees to left. (Don't worry if your rectangle looks like a pyramid, it's ok, I promise)

Roll out dough

Roll out again and repeat process until butter is finished (you may have to chill the pastry for 15 minutes between each rolling)
Before using, allow to chill for 30 minutes.

Melt butter on low heat, add flour and mix to smooth out lumps, add cinnamon, sugar and water, mix until thickens. Take off heat and leave to cool.
Peel and slice apples thinly , boil until soft, drain and mix into sauce, mashing apples slightly.

Melt butter flour, sugar, water and cinnamon add the apples, let cool.
Roll out chilled dough to line the pan of your choice, I unfortunately, had no choice, but to use my old cake baking tin, that's fine, it's the end result that matters, don't you think?

I couldn't even get the lining evenly around the inside of the square pan, not winning today, at all!

Pour apple sauce into pan and cut strips from rolled dough to place on top of pie.

Brush egg over entire top of pie and bake in oven at 180c for 45 minutes or until pastry is golden brown and cooked.

I must say!, after all the chaos of the day, the pie did not taste to bad after all.

So this is my contribution to the Qurators: Hive Top Chef!|Favorite Traditional Food competition .
Thank you for sharing my experience on "How to make an Imperfect Apple Pie".
By the way, the wine was very much appreciated after the hectic day.

Oooooooo! A Karoo cooker! I love your imperfect apple pie with the glass of red wine. When I lived on the Natal coast those little thieves were a huge problem. So cheeky. So at home in a human's home. Now that we're in the Karoo we have a bigger problem. And far more destructive. Baboons. Thanks for the fun share and recipe @artywink

Thanks @buckaroobaby are you in the Karoo? I miss that place, yes those Baboons can be very vicious and , oh so ! destructive, thank you for passing by really appreciate it, have a great day.

Yes. Over a decade now. Love it. We're in the Klein Karoo. Tussen erens en nerens!

Lol, My grandmother had a farm in Steytlerville Karoo, she farmed with goats, I use to love visiting her. Very dry area, I know what you mean when you say, Tussen erens en nerens! there is no other way to describe it, you either love it, or hate it.
