Tales of the Urban Explorer: The Industrial Church

in Urban Exploration3 years ago (edited)

Several other explorers have visited 'The Industrial Church' and have been turned away. By whom you may ask?

24_IMG_4166_24.jpg

Churches are places of worship so I can only imagine that once upon a time this particular one was not located in the middle of a large industrial estate and that all this has been built around it.

2_IMG_4143_2.jpg

Perhaps this is not the case and the church was built in mind for labourers carting heavy machinery and doing manual labour? Maybe not.

The church was built in 1841 in Gothic style using local sandstone, primarily for the employees of the Weaver Navigation. At that time, the church stood on a headland jutting out into the River Mersey. However the Manchester Ship Canal was built on its river-side, and the Runcorn and Weston Canal on the land-side; access to the church was restricted by the movement of lock gates.

When the lock gates were in use the church was effectively cut off from the mainland, and for this reason, it was said to be the only church in Britain in use standing on an uninhabited island. The church was declared redundant in 1995 and later deconsecrated.

To get close to ‘The Industrial Church’ you need to get through the industrial yard’s security who will tell you to ‘fuck off’ unless you have a great reason to enter.

Visiting this abandoned church for any reason at all is not a good reason (according to them), and so you need to visit at the weekend when they are not at work.

At least that is what we did and I guess we were lucky not knowing the rules of entrance beforehand.

26_IMG_4169_26.jpg

I looked at what I would consider a small church and wondered what had become of it, and why it was even in this location.

25_IMG_4167_25.jpg

Looking around I could see piles of merchandise on pallets and a sprawling urban landscape. It seemed so out of place.

4_IMG_4146_4.jpg

The high risk of drowning did not deter us in the least. After seeing what’s inside I consider this yet another bullshit sign to keep the unwanted out.

Getting in was not too difficult though I had to be careful my ball-sack was not pierced with shards of glass. Just one of those hazardous things you need to expect once in a while.

5_IMG_4147_5.jpg

The interior was in better condition than I would have expected. 1995 is 25 years ago, and I was happy to see some signs of human civilization within.

6_IMG_4148_6.jpg

The bell tower appeared to be off-limits once again (I have terrible luck with bell-towers) and so we had to make do with the main church which was quite small.

8_IMG_4150_8.jpg

It was light inside and the big light was mostly not needed for once.

7_IMG_4149_7.jpg

14_IMG_4156_14.jpg

Even a couple of vintage musical instruments were still inside. It must have been sealed up tight for years, or not many had visited.

9_IMG_4151_9.jpg

No graffiti and no ‘Satan Rules’ markings often associated with desecrated churches.

11_IMG_4153_11.jpg

12_IMG_4154_12.jpg

13_IMG_4155_13.jpg

Lots of bibles left behind. What else would you find in a church?

15_IMG_4157_15.jpg

@dizzydiscovery can be a poser at times.

17_IMG_4159_17.jpg

18_IMG_4160_18.jpg

Plenty of stuff to rifle through in the drawers, you need to come back here on a Saturday @grindle!

20_IMG_4162_20.jpg

16_IMG_4158_16.jpg

Cobwebs on the bible, I could have gotten a better shot but it’s not a bad one.

22_IMG_4164_22.jpg

Most of the church pews have vanished; I wonder what happened to them?

This was a strange explore and a quick one as there was one large area and little else inside.

21_IMG_4163_21.jpg

Exiting, I looked around once again. Not a person in sight, no whirring machinery; no sound, no noise. Now if every explore could be like this I would be happy.

A beautiful structure... I always wonder why places like these are abandoned; and with so many things inside still... the piano, documents, etc

Other than the posted info, I have been unable to find out why it has just been left. It's grade listed meaning it can't be demolished for historical reasons. That's not always a good thing as the owner now has this liability on their hands.

In an ideal world, some conservation body ought to take it over, pay the owner if owner wants, and restore to some degree of former glory... Odd location as you say, but they don't make buildings like that any more. Sad to imagine it destroyed... or just left to fall apart.

Boy, what a beautiful explore. Nicely done!

I'm guessing somebody has 'repurposed' the pews. That some serious nice straight lumber there that would cost a fortune at the lumber yard. If I'm right they just dropped the bibles and hymnals and prayer books on the floor. I guess if you are hard case enough to steal from a church dropping a few volumes won't bother you much.

I'm guessing somebody has 'repurposed' the pews

I have done several churches now and in most cases the pews are all gone. Someone wants them for something.

The sand stone church is really amazing and beautiful. But it is pity that being left abandoned.

No kidding, is that an old English D I see on @dizzydiscovery's hat or am I imagining things? This looks like it was a pretty cool place. They should turn it into a night club. That would be awesome. Great acoustics and a really moody goth atmosphere. Since it has been deconsecrated, it should be too big of a deal.

It is an old English D buddy. Night club sounds like a good idea but not right now, covid-19 and what not

I live in Michigan, so I have a couple hats like that of my own. There used to be a club down in Pontiac near Detroit called Clutch Cargo's. They used to have lots of bands and comedians there. I went and saw Stephen Lynch down there at one point.

my old man used to DJ in Cleveland Ohio at a big converted foundary. Hardcore gabba and as it was on a sunday he used to call the night 'Church'. I agree would make a good club.

That is really cool!

was a plac called Metropolis and then later Trilogy but holy shit his sunday was the busiest night man . unbelievable, and he called it church

Not a bad idea except those damn gates are in the way and the security blokes would not let the party animals in!

I always love to photobomb haha

So beautiful building! Close to my home there is an abandoned old church. It's not the only abandoned church here, even if my city is full of not-abandoned churches like every italian city ^_^. I have to remember to take some pics of it but it's almost impossible to go inside of it).

but it's almost impossible to go inside of it).

Almost impossible means.. hmmm maybe possible! That's part of the fun.. trying to get in!

Yup I got the fuck off treatment!
Nice to see inside this little beauty and lots of lovely treasure
Nice

Try at weekends, just down the road from you! Watch out for that bloody toll bridge.. I didn't pay and got sent a demand for £22.

😂 expensive day out ! Hope your mate went halves

To give him credit... he did.

Nice find. I would love to do some metal detecting around that place. I bet there are some "hidden treasures" like old coins and trinkets.

Never really thought of this Joe. Could be some hidden coins under all the rubbish.

For sure. I have a metal detector but most old buildings like abandoned churches are private property and people just aren't keen on letting strangers look for coins and trinkets on their property.

This is a great explore, such a shame about the bell tower though, would have loved to have seen that.

I did get to go up one recently, took a long time to get to the top and I was covered in cobwebs. Nobody had been up there in years.

Nice to see the organ is still these. It was not as bad inside as I expected. Maybe the location puts off the usual vandals. The local landscape could have changed a lot in 180 years and maybe there were people living around there before.

It was better than expected inside.. and yes the location and security is the reason it's not full of graffiti. Makes for a pleasant change!
