Art, Crafts And Eclectic Colour Palette

2866.JPG

African art whether whittled from wood, painted on canvas, crafted in beads it is always an adventure.

These ad-hoc stores are erected every day by individuals to sell crafts, with few visitors to the region business is exceptionally slow, on the other side of town a similar market sells food produce by local farmers.

Many objects at first sight from curbside of road, from large to small something for all to enjoy. Normal commerce is creeping in evident from factories, most is homemade from local wood or plants in the region.

2867.JPG

Bird feeders hanging off the branch, these are made onsite using Monkey Apple tree (Strychnos madagascariensis) that grow wild in this area.

2868.JPG

Sturdy wood and metal toys for children to enjoy, household decorations for hanging on walls or in doorways brightly painted, eye-caching for a boring corner!

2869.JPG

Ancestral beading knowledge shared makes delightful ornamental characters to place around a home, spend a little more time with the ladies who sit doing beadwork into powerful designs. Learn the meaning of the beads when you see traditional bracelets, necklaces, earrings or headgear on offer.

2871.JPG

Some put their work into milk jug coverings or throws over food platters with beading trim to protect from unwanted insects, our Zulu women do spend hours sourcing materials or embroidering their own, offering good value in these remote areas on the edge of town.

Thanda Zulu was established in 2008 to empower Zulu women and to provide them an opportunity to earn a steady income and preserve a longstanding tradition. Source

2872.JPG

Wistful visual melancholy in the paintings something that spells out the moods of Africa in warm tones or blue of the sea and sky, quirky giraffe smiling down on you each tells a story.

2873.JPG

Oil on canvas paintings the artist will be close to share details of each. Africa is brave in colours reflecting the vibrant richness of nature echoed in the market. Oh the Baobab and Elephant, my favourites!

Alas I do not know the name,
wistful in manner,
angels on the air,
embracing wild joy throughout the land.

One feels for them taking so much time and effort in the hand crafts, sadly starting to see mass produced also arriving in T-Shirts and commodities one never saw previously.

Agreed and I so wish that our clothing manifucture can be revived as it will be a great booster for employment.

Clothing was so big here in Durban, cheap imports have killed our market. If it was quality one could maybe turn a blind eye, but the crap that is imported adds insult to injury!

!LUV Patience my friend, maybe the wheels of justice will turn, even if slowly....

Oh yes, we also had big clothing factories up north that employed thousands.
It was really a very bad decision to close them down for cheaper imports and now we can see the results with our mountains of un-employed people.

But you are right and maybe we will get it right in the future.

Well gravy train has run dry, cannot keep bailing people out who do not wish to try some form of work.

As a country we will reap what we sowed, thirty years on the tide is taking a long, long time to turn, still long Indaba under trees where nothing is resolved let alone doing!

Yes and the strange thing is that we all saw this coming Lady Joan, but our hands were tied to do something about it. A sad and sorry tale.

That’s a market I would love exploring for sure so many interesting things

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk

Something to enjoy ambling through, much of the work displayed, the artist will be sure behind the stands waiting to assist... if you show interest.

I do love fairs like this have avoided them during Covid but hope by next year we won’t have to

These stores are up daily, traders may change slightly but most only earn from what they sell here. Was a good tourist spot when covid was not around.

They must be hit hard due to Covid I feel for them

I love these paintings and the other hand made things. It would be an amazing experience to walk through such a market once. These are so different from the ones we know here.

I always enjoy seeing the art on canvas, some are very talented, many use similar vibrant color.

Woodwork one soon identifies regions, some here originate in Zimbabwe where traders have 3 month permits to come down and trade.

Zulu woman are known for excellent beadwork and beading more often than not right on sight.

Pottery is starting to show once again in traditional styles which is another interesting concept, a coffee cup with giraffe neck and head popping over the side as a handle, or trunk of the elephant.

I love to stroll through such markets when we are on vacation, to see the handicraft by the locals. They often spend so much time in the things they sell often much too cheap in my eyes.

Lot of work setting up each day, then many do sell well under what they would be able to achieve. Small earnings keeps them going hopefully.

I believe you, they can't leave the things there over night. Here many market sellers have little cabins on the markets which they can lock up in the evenings. When many sellers are offering similar things, I can imagine that they go down with the prices to sell.

I hope your new week started well 🌞

Really don't mind similar workmanship, do object to mass manufacture being sold in what should be art and craft stores. Municipalities did try assisting with lockup areas for goods, earlier years may have worked now storage areas would be targets at night.

Enjoying the sun with a cooler breeze on the air today! Hope you aren't too overworked in the office this week.

I'm having a little break always inbetween for Twitter and for the Hive, because they are more important than work ... I get paid for being here anyway 😁

Tourists like I would be one would need assistance to regognize handcrafted goods between mass manufactured ones, I believe. I know that from other holidays where we have seen at home that we have bought much too expensive.

The world has become a dangerous place, so even many people in the small countryside village, where my parents live, lock their doors now when they leave their house to go shopping or visit their neighbors.

I have such great respect for the Zulu project, keeping the traditions and their heritage alive! How many cultures leave them to die an embarrassing death, the young not knowing what their grandparents' traditions are. I love how they keep the art, beading, sculpture, and carvings all flowing. I hope that it helps the locals infuse a little bit of extra to live on.

These are hard times, but, that aside, I love these markets and the colors are always vibrant and shout out as you walk by and the oil on canvas is enviable - to be able to do it. I love your posts for #MarketFriday, you always make them so interesting and worth many visits! Thank you!

A wonderfully put-together #MarketFriday. I appreciate how much effort you put into making #MarketFriday a success! It is such a wonderful feeling to have so many, yourself included working to make this tag a success. You have made it fun to visit your post and each different person adds a unique touch to their posts. It is interesting to see the different cultures in our little world. It opens up my world, and, I hope yours too. Thank you so much for being a part of all this. I hope you have a most wonderful day! Hive on!!

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

How to Participate:

Go to the market! Any market will do! Food, clothing, plant, or animal, if you wish. You can go to the zoo, an art auction, and to restaurants. Anywhere or anything that you pay money for any kind of service.

Take pictures! Be creative! It’s fun!
Tell us a little bit about the market, what brought you here?
Post the picture.(s)
Don’t forget to use the MarketFriday Community #196308 to post from or hashtag it! You must use #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post and then drop the link to your post on my #MarketFriday post, so I can easily find them.

As always, please remember! #MarketFriday loves you! ❤️

Upped and reposted

Some families have great design techniques where men do utensils for the kitchen in woodwork, woman add finishing touches to handles in beading, really unique salad servers especially.

Oil paintings always vibrant fun, make wonderful gifts to send to people living in cold countries to bring warmth into the home. Sadly no international guests at the moment so sales must be tiresomely slow.

Thanks for visiting and kind words, wishing you a wonderful new month!

This is a nice market! I love to shopping the market like that. Have a great day.

These markets are set in tranquil places where people can really enjoy what is on display. Thanks for visiting @sreypov

I have yet to find some markets here in Italy only saw one three weeks ago due to Covid many aren’t allowed to set up which is a bummer because they can earn and I get to shop hahahah

Pity since market places are such a hub of excitement, a meeting place for locals and visitors to mingle and mix together. Livelihood of too many being affected with all these bans!
