Pranks - Yay or Nay in the 21st Century?

in Silver Bloggerslast month (edited)

Pranks that were played in the 20th century could mean the end of a career or land one in court if done in today's world!

Why do people take themselves so seriously and get offended at trivial things said in jest? 'Choose your words carefully' is sage advice today as you have to be politically correct!
As for pranks, don't even think about playing one on 'sensitive' folk and certainly not in the workplace!

I have a friend who, despite living with pain due to severe injuries from a car crash when he was a young man, still has a sense of humour, and keeps everyone entertained with all his anecdotes! B has had multiple unsuccessful hip replacements throughout his life and uses crutches, but he never complains. He is a tonic for everyone!

Subsequent surgical procedures saw him spending much time in hospitals over the years.

The pranks played by nursing staff in the 70s would lead to a warning letter, instant dismissal, or time in a court of law in the twenty-first century!

The Fizz

Does anyone remember hearing of the Eno's bedpan prank in hospitals? If you're a seasoned Silver, you for sure would have heard about that one or experienced it first hand!
Well, B was tricked with that prank when using a urinal; he was so startled that he nearly dropped it on the floor!
A friend and her brother were still in primary school when they played that prank on their Grandma, who liked to have a tipple, or two too many. They waited in the passage till they heard Grandma getting up to use the potty, but were disappointed. The dear old girl must have had one too many that night, as she hardly reacted to the fizz below deck!

The Skin Graft

B was the butt of another prank, something he's only shared with family and some close friends, as it is a rather sensitive subject.
The prank played on him by a nurse had to do with a skin graft needed for his one nostril that was partially destroyed in the accident.

B was a little shy telling me this story; he had shared it with hubby a long while back but I never heard about it. He kept on warning me that it's a sensitive subject, and he's not sure if he should tell me, blah blah blah. The more excuses he made BEFORE telling me the story, the more curious I became, till I eventually told him to get on with it!

When in hospital after the accident, a nurse told him the surgeon was on his way to discuss and explain the skin graft. She asked him if he was Jewish, and he said, 'No, why are you asking?' Well, sir, I have to ask you a rather sensitive question - are you circumcised?
He assured her he did not have that procedure.
'Good,' said the nurse, 'then the skin graft won't be a problem,' and left the ward.

The curtains were drawn, so B thought he'd save the busy doctor's precious time. He lifted the blankets and his hospital gown in readiness for the physical examination. He thought he was being considerate!

Remember, unlike today, we were awestruck back then by any medical specialist. Surgeons were seen as some kind of god; in fact, some of them acted as if they were!

The nurse walked in first, with the surgeon following her. She did not expect to be greeted with this sight and quickly covered him with the blankets.
The surgeon said nothing, went on to examine an unexpected part of B - his ear - and explained that they would be using skin from behind his ear for the graft!
Not the area my friend thought they would use to harvest skin for a nose graft!

B did not explain his inappropriate 'flashing' to the surgeon. After the doctor left, he scolded the nurse, who was laughing uncontrollably by that time!

I'm sure she would not have done it to any of the other patients, but she must have known it would give him many chuckles because of his naturally mischievous nature.

Chocolates or What?

Not a hospital story, but one that concerned my Mom and our friend's Mother. The two old gals went on holiday with B and his late wife, who was one of my best friends. Their son-in-law, who is even more mischievous, left something on top of Aunty B's clothes in her suitcase.
When she and Mom Lily started unpacking, she exclaimed that H must have packed chocolates in as a surprise treat. Aunty B was older than Mom and was battling to open a 'chocolate. ' Mom took one look at this and exclaimed that it wasn't chocolates; it was condoms! The silver foil packaging made it look like chocolates to the 'untrained' eye! B and my friend heard this commotion in their room next door, they did not know anything about this prank.

Mom and Aunty B's consternation turned to laughter, but they vowed to give H a piece of both their minds when they returned home. That, of course, did not happen as H knew how to charm the two old gals, offering each of them a box of chocolates as a peace offering!

Pranks played wherever one went when we were younger, actually into later years. Now those with a sense of humour are no longer with us, the few who are fret over everything they say.

Watch the words, not sure why, never heard of anyone being killed by vocabulary in any shape or form, just shows you how quickly things can change.

It's just crazy Joan! You have to think twice if you want to make a playful comment to acquaintances, thankfully friends are still on the same wavelength!
I hope you're settling into the new life Joan❤️

Pranks and pranksters growing up was so common, as long as you kept above board, never got caught out it usually was a good laugh.

Finding my feet with a lot to do, plugging away one hurdle at a time. No water all day today, no surprise I suppose. With Easter in a week I see a notice beaches in Durban and down South Coast once again warnings for Ecoli, perhaps check for guests you will have arriving. 🤗

I will! Both sets of guests come to visit family, but the one family always go to the beach, I'll have to tell them. The other guest is from Belgium, and doesn't even use tap water to wash her fruit and veg, never goes near the sea. she's super cautious. Funny, we had water all day, thankfully.
I'm glad to see you here Joan!

Took a few hours off, catching up with so much backlog, daily/annual renewals or requirements, crazy of late, never been so behind in keeping myself up to date.

Well tis life they decided G20 Summit far more important to have water for the few, this has been moved to 25th April by what I understand at this point in time. Quick late pm stop off once again, loving the cooler weather today!

It takes time to get back into a rhythm again, but you will get there!
Lovely cooler weather, raining quite a bit here.
You need to take time off, can't keep going all the time. Be kind to yourself was advice given to me. Take care Joan <3

With winter approaching I will take more time to slowly get through more that needs to be attended to. During hot months I cannot think nor move, did not really want too either after the fall and flu, attending to all the normal which you have been through.

Really hope to take a week off to the Berg at the end of winter or start of spring, time will tell.

Happy Easter Sunday and enjoy the beautiful weather we bestowed with today. ❤️

We used to say PC politically correct now we have the woke culture, basically we can't open our mouths or even breathe without offending someone now Lizzie.

It's plain crazy, a very confused world it seems! I had to Google the woke culture; thank goodness I'm no longer in the work place! Here in SA one has to be so careful how you describe someone who's displaying suspicious behaviour in the road on the WhatsApp neighbourhood watch groups! I often just zip my mouth and ask my security company to do a patrol!
My Mom used to feel so positive about changes but the last few years of her life, she started saying we live in a mixed-up and confused world.

It's crazy how this is going on. It's like people are angry and thin skinned and take everything they see or hear personal, as if the world is all about them and their feelings. Now that may sound mean, but if it's true, is it really mean?

I have never been much into pranks in real life and I don't much enjoy having them pulled on me either. I don't know why! I've always been that way, but I am not thin skinned and the internet is a whole nother world from the reality of the majority of my life. I don't give power in my real life to what strangers say and do on the net... in general.

I used to like the show Candid Camera though, back in a time where pranks were more for fun and not mean or scary. There have been some other shows like that too that were pretty fun to watch.

There's a big difference between light-hearted teasing and repeatedly making fun of someone. Unfortunately we find bullies everywhere! Pity they're not on the endangered list, they'll always be around🤨Hi @jacey.boldart, I used to enjoy watching Candid Camera as well!

We lived in better times @lizelle , when we got on with life, no PC bullcrap, no woke nonsense, none of this diversity and inclusion crap. There are far too many wet wipes and oxygen thieves getting offended these days. In my world men still have dangly bits and women a foo foo. There is nothing else other than mental health issues.AND DO NOT get me started on the pathetic pronoun arguements!

Happy Sunday xx

Some people are too afraid to say it like it is, and I talk especially of our crime/neighbourhood WhatsApp groups again. I only stay on there because crime is a reality here in SA, but stopped the notifications! The abbreviations are just crazy, many I've never heard of. Beyond ridiculous!
I agree about the pronouns, won't go there.
It's a very confused world! We for sure lived in better times @grindle! I'd never heard the term woke until @tengolotodo mentioned it, what next!!! I always try to look for the good in people, but boy oh boy, I've started brushing sides with some nasties; oxygen thieves is an apt term.

We live in interesting times indeed.

I loved your anecdotes and naturally I laughed a lot. I think a lot of people still play this kind of games. One more way to relieve stress even if sometimes they are bad jokes. Life today is very complicated and everything affects us. How is your health and how did the move go?
I am always worried about you. Hugs.🤗😍

I am 100% well again, my friend. Thank you for your caring, I do appreciate it. That was a nasty bug I had for sure, it didn't want to go away. I'll take immune boosters for a while, will be winter soon but it doesn't get so cold here.
The move is going to take quite a while, but suits me fine. Gives me more time to sort through stuff.
Hope you're having a lovely Sunday my friend. A big hug to you💞Hi @mamani, they say laughter is the best medicine, and those pranks we played used to have us in stitches.

Can't help but smile😬😁. Nowadays people are more sensitive and take life too seriously. I've seen pranks that don't ended nicely😑.

So true, they're way too sensitive, and that's often when the pranks go horribly wrong!
